DigitalOcean vs Linode is not a universal price or performance contest: DigitalOcean is the better default for most developers and small teams that value managed services and simplicity, while Linode—now Akamai Cloud—often suits experienced operators who prioritize VM value, included transfer, infrastructure control, or Akamai’s distributed-cloud ecosystem.

“Linode” remains widely used by customers and in search results, but the current service is presented as Akamai Cloud. Akamai acquired Linode in February 2022, so this comparison uses “Akamai Cloud/Linode” when the older name helps clarify what readers will see in documentation and account interfaces. The comparison focuses on developer-oriented cloud platforms rather than attempting to rank either provider against AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud for every enterprise use case.

Prices and availability below reflect the research pass dated August 2026. Cloud pricing, regions, hardware, database engines, GPU capacity, and support terms can change, so use the providers’ current calculators and regional pricing pages before committing.

Key takeaways

  • DigitalOcean is the better default for most solo developers, startups, agencies, and small teams because its managed databases, App Platform, documentation, control panel, and integrated workflows reduce operational work.
  • Akamai Cloud, formerly Linode, is often the stronger infrastructure-value choice when a buyer mainly needs Linux VMs, substantial included transfer, predictable compute pricing, or access to Akamai’s wider distributed-cloud ecosystem.
  • DigitalOcean Droplets start at $4 per month, while Akamai’s North American pricing page shows a $5-per-month Nanode 1 GB plan with 1 vCPU, 25 GB of storage, and 1 TB of transfer; the plans are not automatically equivalent.
  • DigitalOcean’s basic Kubernetes control plane is free and high availability costs $40 per month; Akamai’s basic LKE control plane is free and high availability starts at $60 per month depending on region.
  • Backups, block storage, databases, load balancers, public IPv4, persistent Kubernetes volumes, and outbound transfer can change the total bill more than the headline VM price.

DigitalOcean vs Linode: what is the difference?

DigitalOcean Droplets are cloud virtual machines, while Linode instances are now generally sold as Akamai Cloud compute instances. Both providers also offer managed Kubernetes, databases, object and block storage, load balancing, networking, APIs, backups, and developer tooling.

Decision area DigitalOcean Akamai Cloud/Linode

DigitalOcean’s product documentation covers its product catalog, features, limits, availability, control-panel workflows, and billing. Akamai’s Cloud Computing documentation covers compute, networking, Kubernetes, databases, storage, and billing. Calling DigitalOcean more beginner-oriented is a product-experience judgment, not a controlled usability benchmark.

Which provider should you choose?

Choose DigitalOcean when the shortest path from account creation to a working application matters more than extracting the lowest possible infrastructure cost.

  • You want managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Valkey, OpenSearch, or caching options.
  • You want App Platform or Functions instead of managing every application server yourself.
  • You value tutorials, Marketplace images, a simple control panel, integrated firewalls, monitoring, backups, and straightforward small-team workflows.
  • You are deploying a first Linux server or adopting Kubernetes with a small operations team.
  • You accept paying somewhat more for convenience, integration, or managed operations.

Choose Akamai Cloud/Linode when the workload is primarily a set of Linux VMs and your team is comfortable assembling and operating more of the stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You care strongly about included transfer and VM price-to-resource value.
  • You want infrastructure control rather than a heavily guided platform experience.
  • You need a particular region, GPU, or instance family that is unavailable from DigitalOcean in the required location.
  • You plan to use Akamai’s broader distributed-cloud, edge, CDN, or delivery ecosystem—but have verified that each required product is available and billed separately as expected.
  • You already have reliable processes for patching, monitoring, backups, security, and disaster recovery.

Choose neither from price alone for compliance-heavy production, strict support-response requirements, complex multi-region systems, or workloads that require hyperscaler-specific services. Evaluate support commitments, SLA scope, compliance evidence, capacity, redundancy, data residency, and contractual terms.

How do DigitalOcean and Akamai Cloud prices compare?

DigitalOcean vs Linode pricing is only meaningful when the plans have comparable memory, CPU class, storage, region, transfer allowance, and attached services. The official DigitalOcean Droplet pricing page lists these signals from the August 2026 research pass:

DigitalOcean Basic Droplet Monthly price Resources shown Included transfer
Smallest listed Droplet $4 Plan details vary by catalog tier Depends on plan
1 GiB Basic $6 1 GiB memory 500 GiB to 5,000 GiB depending on size
2 GiB / 1 vCPU Basic $12 2 GiB memory, 1 vCPU Plan-dependent
4 GiB / 2 vCPU Basic $24 4 GiB memory, 2 vCPUs Plan-dependent
8 GiB / 4 vCPU Basic $48 8 GiB memory, 4 vCPUs Plan-dependent

DigitalOcean changed Droplet billing to per-second billing effective January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher. DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% of Droplet cost, daily backups at 30%, snapshot storage at $0.06 per GB per month, managed databases from $15 per month, Spaces from $5 per month, and load balancers from $12 per month on its official pricing page.

Akamai’s North America cloud pricing page shows the following compute signals:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Akamai Cloud shared-CPU plan Monthly price Resources shown Included transfer
Nanode 1 GB $5 1 vCPU, 25 GB storage 1 TB
Shared CPU 2 GB $12 2 GB memory Plan-dependent
Shared CPU 4 GB / 2 CPU $24 4 GB memory, 2 CPUs Plan-dependent
Shared CPU 8 GB / 4 CPU $48 8 GB memory, 4 CPUs Plan-dependent
Shared CPU 16 GB / 6 CPU $96 16 GB memory, 6 CPUs Plan-dependent

Akamai’s pricing page also displays a separate shared-CPU family with a 1 GB line at $2 per month. That figure must not be treated as the universal Akamai entry price: the plan family, hardware generation, region, availability, and included resources must be identified before comparison. Akamai states that pricing can vary by region, particularly between core and distributed-compute regions.

Akamai lists block storage at $1 per month for 10 GB, scaling with capacity. Akamai’s object-storage table separates storage from outbound transfer and shows storage at $0.02 per GB per month, with a first-1-TB monthly allowance and $0.005 per-GB overage in the relevant North American table. Check the Akamai Object Storage pricing documentation for the exact product rules.

A further billing qualification matters for long-lived or specialized workloads: Akamai’s documentation says that, as of July 1, 2026, certain services—including G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes, and additional IPv4 addresses—are billed by actual hours used without a monthly price cap. Consult Akamai’s billing documentation before assuming a monthly maximum.

What does a realistic monthly deployment cost?

The cheapest advertised plan is not necessarily the cheapest usable deployment. A complete estimate should include the VM, backups, persistent storage, database, load balancer, public IPv4 where applicable, object storage, Kubernetes components, and expected outbound transfer.

Workload DigitalOcean cost signals Akamai Cloud cost signals What can reverse the result
Hobby website Droplet from $4; practical 1 GiB tier shown at $6; backups and storage extra Nanode 1 GB shown at $5 in North America; block storage and backups extra Region, backup method, storage, and transfer
Small production app Two $12 worker VMs would be $24 before load balancer, backups, storage, database, and transfer; load balancer starts at $12 Two compute instances plus NodeBalancer, storage, backups, database, and transfer; exact total varies by plan and region Managed database choice and high-availability design
High-bandwidth app Droplet transfer allowance depends on size; overage is advertised at $0.01/GiB North American compute tables show substantial transfer allowances; object-storage transfer is priced separately Whether traffic comes from compute, object storage, CDN, or another region
Three-worker Kubernetes cluster Worker nodes start at $12 each; basic control plane is free; HA control plane is $40; storage and load balancer extra Worker Linodes, NodeBalancer, and Block Storage are separate; basic LKE control plane is free; HA starts at $60 depending on region Worker size, persistent volumes, HA, region, and egress
Database-backed production app Managed databases start at $15; replicas, storage, backups, compute, and network design can increase the bill Aiven-powered managed database availability, engine, region, scaling, and price must be checked for the target cluster Engine availability, failover, replicas, and migration requirements

The table shows pricing signals rather than universal quotes. A $24 DigitalOcean configuration and a $24 Akamai configuration may have different CPU generations, transfer allowances, storage, region availability, backup treatment, or support characteristics. Use the DigitalOcean pricing calculator and Akamai’s regional pricing table with the exact architecture.

Which platform offers better managed databases?

DigitalOcean has the stronger documented first-party managed-database story for many small teams. DigitalOcean’s current catalog lists managed MongoDB, Kafka, PostgreSQL, MySQL, caching, Valkey, and OpenSearch, alongside its broader application platform and storage products.

Akamai also markets managed database clusters powered by Aiven. Older comparisons that say Akamai has no managed databases are outdated, but buyers should verify the exact engine, version, region, scaling model, backup policy, failover option, maintenance window, and price before choosing a database architecture. See Akamai’s managed database product page and the current documentation.

Database question Why the answer matters
Is the service genuinely managed? A one-click server image is not equivalent to a managed cluster with provider-operated maintenance and failover.
Which engines and versions are available? The preferred database may not be offered in the target region or tier.
Are backups automatic and restorable? A backup that has never passed a restore test is not a verified recovery plan.
Can compute and storage scale independently? Independent scaling can reduce unnecessary cost and migration work.
Is high availability available? A single database node can remain a single point of failure even when the application has multiple VMs.
What are the connection limits and maintenance rules? Connection limits, maintenance windows, extensions, and version compatibility affect application design.
How difficult is migration out? Native dumps, logical replication, and portable schemas reduce managed-service exit risk.

For a small team that wants PostgreSQL or MySQL without assembling replication, backups, monitoring, and maintenance, DigitalOcean is usually the easier recommendation. For an experienced operator who prefers self-managed databases on VMs, either provider can work, but the operator assumes patching, encryption, failover, monitoring, and restore responsibility.

Which Kubernetes service is better?

DigitalOcean Kubernetes is the easier starting point for a small team, while Akamai LKE can be attractive when worker-node economics, transfer, region, or Akamai infrastructure integration matters more.

Kubernetes cost or feature DigitalOcean Kubernetes Akamai LKE
Basic control plane Free Free
High-availability control plane $40 per month Starts at $60 per month depending on region
Worker nodes Droplets billed separately; worker nodes start at $12 Compute instances billed separately
Persistent storage Billed separately Block Storage billed separately
Load balancing Billed separately NodeBalancer billed separately
Container registry Free entry tier available Check the current registry and storage arrangement
Operational responsibility Customer still manages workloads, security, upgrades, autoscaling, and observability Customer still manages workloads, security, upgrades, autoscaling, and observability

The DigitalOcean Kubernetes pricing page specifies that worker nodes, persistent storage, load balancers, and related resources are billed separately. Akamai’s LKE documentation likewise separates control-plane infrastructure from Linodes, NodeBalancers, and Block Storage.

“Managed Kubernetes” does not mean the application is automatically highly available. The customer remains responsible for deployment strategy, pod disruption budgets, secrets, network policies, upgrades, autoscaling behavior, observability, backup and restore, and application-level reliability.

Does Akamai Cloud have better bandwidth or networking?

Akamai may be the better choice for a high-bandwidth application because its North American compute tables show generous included transfer allowances, but the advantage depends on traffic direction, region, plan family, and whether the traffic uses compute, object storage, a load balancer, or a separate CDN.

DigitalOcean advertises outbound transfer allowances beginning at 500 GiB per month for Droplets, with overage at $0.01 per GiB. DigitalOcean says inbound VPC transfer is free, while internet egress counts against bandwidth quotas and inter-datacenter VPC peering costs $0.01 per GiB according to its pricing calculator and networking pricing information.

Akamai’s North American compute tables show 1 TB of transfer on the Nanode 1 GB tier and larger allowances on larger plans. Akamai object storage separates storage from outbound transfer. These allowances cannot be assumed to pool across every Akamai product.

Networking cost or capability DigitalOcean Akamai Cloud/Linode
Compute transfer example 500 GiB to 5,000 GiB depending on Droplet size 1 TB on the North American Nanode 1 GB example; larger plans vary
Outbound overage example $0.01/GiB advertised after allowance Product- and region-specific; object-storage table shows $0.005/GB in the relevant North American case
Inbound traffic Generally free; verify product-specific rules Verify the exact compute or storage product rules
Private networking VPC available; inter-datacenter peering is priced separately Private networking and region-specific transfer rules require verification
Load balancer Starts at $12 per month NodeBalancer billed separately
CDN relationship Spaces and other services are separate from a general-purpose CDN Akamai CDN, edge delivery, DNS, security, and compute may be separate products and bills

Akamai’s association with a major delivery network does not mean an Akamai Cloud compute instance automatically includes the full Akamai CDN. Price CDN, edge delivery, security, DNS, origin transfer, and compute as separate components unless the selected product documentation explicitly combines them.

Which provider has better performance?

Neither provider can be called categorically faster from the available research. Real performance depends on CPU generation, shared versus dedicated CPU, virtualization platform, NVMe or standard SSD storage, network path, region, database locality, cache behavior, and whether the workload is CPU-, memory-, disk-, or network-bound.

A fair comparison requires the same operating-system image, region, instance class, storage size, kernel settings, application build, test duration, and measurement window. Run tests in disposable environments and repeat them at different times because shared-resource behavior can vary.

# CPU
sysbench cpu --cpu-max-prime=20000 run

# Memory
sysbench memory run

# Disk test: use a disposable test volume
fio --name=randread
    --filename=/path/to/testfile
    --size=4G
    --bs=4k
    --iodepth=32
    --rw=randread
    --direct=1
    --runtime=60
    --time_based

Network testing should use an approved endpoint and respect provider policies. Measure latency to actual users and dependent services, sustained throughput, packet loss, disk IOPS and latency, database query latency, and application response time. These commands are a suggested methodology, not evidence that either provider won a benchmark.

How do regions and global delivery affect the choice?

The correct region is the one that offers the required product, capacity, latency, GPU or instance family, database engine, IPv4 availability, replication options, and data-residency properties—not necessarily the provider with the larger corporate network.

Akamai distinguishes core compute regions from distributed-compute regions, and product availability can differ between them. LKE availability, managed databases, GPUs, instance families, and pricing should therefore be checked in the exact target region using Akamai’s compute-plan guidance and the current regional pricing index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DigitalOcean also requires product-level checking: a Droplet region may not offer the same managed database engine, Kubernetes capacity, GPU option, or storage feature as another region. Before signup, verify:

  • Distance and latency to the primary users.
  • Availability of the selected compute family and capacity.
  • Availability of the required database engine and version.
  • GPU, IPv4, Kubernetes, load-balancer, and block-storage availability.
  • Cross-region replication and disaster-recovery options.
  • Data-residency and transfer implications.

Is DigitalOcean easier to operate?

DigitalOcean generally offers the smoother developer experience for first deployments and small teams. A typical workflow can include SSH-key-based Droplet creation, cloud firewall configuration, DNS, backups, monitoring, Marketplace images, managed databases, App Platform, and Kubernetes from one relatively consistent control plane.

Akamai provides Cloud Manager, a CLI, an API, Kubernetes, networking, storage, databases, and technical documentation. Akamai can be a good fit for operators who prefer explicit infrastructure building blocks, but the end-to-end application may require more decisions about how to assemble and secure those blocks.

Are DigitalOcean and Akamai Cloud production-ready?

Both can support production workloads, but production readiness comes from architecture and operations rather than a low-cost VM. A single VM is not redundant, a snapshot is not a complete disaster-recovery plan, and a managed Kubernetes control plane does not make application pods highly available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and operations checklist

  • Use SSH keys, disable password login where appropriate, and apply least privilege.
  • Configure cloud firewalls and host firewalls separately where the threat model requires both.
  • Patch the operating system, runtime, dependencies, containers, and database clients.
  • Store secrets outside source code and restrict API-token permissions.
  • Separate application, database, and backup failure domains where the workload justifies it.
  • Use encrypted transport and verify encryption-at-rest behavior for the selected service.
  • Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, disk latency, network traffic, application errors, and backup results.
  • Test restores rather than assuming a backup or snapshot is usable.
  • Document incident response, account recovery, billing safeguards, and provider support escalation.
  • Review DDoS protection limits, SLA exclusions, support response targets, and abuse or account-review processes.

Reliability claims must distinguish provider infrastructure availability, a single VM’s availability, a managed database’s availability, and the customer application’s uptime. A provider SLA cannot compensate for one server, an untested backup, or an application with no failover path.

How should you migrate between DigitalOcean and Akamai Cloud?

VMs are relatively portable, but managed databases, Kubernetes resources, networking, object storage, load balancers, and provider-specific integrations still create migration work. Plan the exit before production rather than discovering the dependencies during an outage.

  1. Inventory the application, cron jobs, systemd services, secrets, firewall rules, DNS records, TLS certificates, volumes, database extensions, monitoring, and scheduled tasks.
  2. Export the application and database independently rather than treating a server image as the only backup.
  3. Lower DNS TTL before the planned cutover.
  4. Recreate firewall, private-network, storage, and load-balancer rules on the destination.
  5. Copy files with an appropriate tool such as rsync.
  6. Use a native database dump, restore, or logical replication and check roles, extensions, collations, permissions, and version compatibility.
  7. Run both environments in parallel and test functional behavior, performance, backups, monitoring, and rollback.
  8. Switch traffic only after validation, then retain the old environment through the rollback window.
  9. Remove the old resources only after confirming final backups, DNS propagation, billing, and data integrity.
rsync -aHAX --numeric-ids
  /srv/app/
  user@new-server:/srv/app/

pg_dump --format=custom --no-owner appdb > appdb.dump
pg_restore --clean --if-exists --no-owner
  --dbname=appdb appdb.dump

The commands require adaptation for permissions, active writes, database versions, extensions, and production downtime. Provider-specific block storage, load balancers, managed databases, and Kubernetes objects do not migrate automatically.

When is a third provider a better fit?

DigitalOcean or Akamai Cloud may not be the right answer when another platform better matches a specific constraint. Hetzner Cloud is commonly investigated for aggressive compute pricing and resource-per-dollar value; Vultr is commonly investigated for broad location coverage; AWS Lightsail suits buyers who want a simpler AWS entry point; Cloudways adds a managed hosting layer; and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure can fit particular free-tier, enterprise, or high-capacity requirements. Current prices and feature availability for those alternatives were not separately verified in this comparison, so do not treat those descriptions as current price claims.

Your workload requires contractual enterprise support, regulated compliance, specialized hyperscaler services, guaranteed capacity, or a managed platform unavailable in the required region. Compare those requirements directly rather than selecting on headline monthly price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DigitalOcean cheaper than Linode in 2026?

DigitalOcean is not universally cheaper than Linode, now Akamai Cloud. DigitalOcean Droplets start at $4 per month and its listed 1 GiB Basic tier is $6, while Akamai’s North American page shows a $5 Nanode 1 GB plan with 1 vCPU, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. Backups, storage, databases, load balancers, region, and bandwidth can reverse the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Linode still a separate cloud provider?

Linode is now generally presented as Akamai Cloud after Akamai acquired Linode in February 2022. Readers may still encounter Linode in account URLs, product names, documentation, and community discussions.

Which is better for Kubernetes, DigitalOcean or Akamai Cloud?

DigitalOcean is usually easier for a small team adopting Kubernetes, while Akamai Cloud can be attractive when worker-node economics, transfer, region, or infrastructure integration matters more. DigitalOcean’s basic control plane is free and HA costs $40 per month; Akamai’s basic LKE control plane is free and HA starts at $60 per month depending on region, with nodes, storage, and load balancing billed separately.

Is DigitalOcean or Akamai Cloud better for production?

Neither provider is automatically better for production. Production suitability depends on redundancy, backups, restore testing, security, monitoring, support terms, region, database design, disaster recovery, and the reliability of the application architecture.

Can you migrate a website from DigitalOcean to Akamai Cloud or vice versa?

Yes, a website can usually be migrated by copying application files, recreating services and firewall rules, moving the database with a dump or logical replication, lowering DNS TTL, testing both environments, and switching traffic after validation. Managed databases, Kubernetes objects, block storage, load balancers, and provider-specific integrations require separate migration work.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For most developers, startups, agencies, and small teams launching or operating a small-to-medium application, DigitalOcean is the better default in 2026 because it reduces operational friction and provides a stronger integrated managed-service path. Akamai Cloud—formerly Linode—is the better fit when VM economics, included transfer, infrastructure control, a required region or instance family, or Akamai’s distributed-cloud strategy matters more than the smoothest developer experience. Price the complete architecture before deciding.
