A cloud server does not publish a YouTube broadcast on its own. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—must send video to YouTube using the platform’s Live server URL and stream key. Estimate the bandwidth before choosing a server
For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps video for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. Use a monthly estimate, then leave headroom
At a continuous 14 Mbps, the video feed alone transfers about 4.54 decimal TB over a 30-day month: 14 megabits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is a calculation, not a provider quote. Add audio and protocol overhead, leave headroom, and use observed transfer to size the final plan. Lowering bitrate reduces transfer but also reduces image quality. For this one-feed YouTube setup, do not multiply the server’s feed transfer by your audience size; YouTube handles viewer delivery.
Compare the quota and overage, not just the monthly server price
- DigitalOcean: its pricing page lists included Droplet outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB/month, depending on plan, and public-internet egress overage at $0.01/GiB. Compare the specific Droplet’s allowance with your calculated use.
- Lightsail: bundles include transfer allowances; AWS says excess outbound transfer can be billed at region-dependent rates. One example on its current bundle page is 5 TB of transfer for a $96/month 2-vCPU, 4-GB compute-optimized bundle. The AWS data-transfer FAQ lists regional outbound overage rates ranging from $0.09/GB to $0.17/GB for the regions shown. These page values are volatile; check your chosen bundle and region before buying.
- Hetzner: retrieve current plan and traffic prices for the intended data center using its API rather than relying on an old comparison. No comparable current plan price is established here, so a cost ranking would be misleading.
When comparing providers, include compute plus transfer, enough outbound capacity for the chosen bitrate, server region, the actual encoding workload, and the time you can spend on operations. A prerecorded loop, a live camera feed, and a locally generated scene may need different encoding resources.

Set up a self-managed feed and protect its continuity
- Choose the source and encoder workload. Decide whether the server will encode a prerecorded loop, relay an already encoded feed, or generate a scene. Select a plan and region only after estimating the required CPU, memory, storage, transfer, and bitrate.
- Configure the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and use the displayed Live server URL and stream key in your encoder. Prefer RTMPS where supported; configure CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and select a resolution and bitrate appropriate to both the content and connection. Follow YouTube’s setup instructions and encoder settings guidance.
- Keep the key secret. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public screenshots, examples, or logs that others can access. Verify the incoming signal in Live Control Room before setting the broadcast’s intended visibility.
- Plan for failures and routine care. Arrange restart supervision and health monitoring; watch disk and log growth; secure credentials; and plan software updates. A self-managed VM or streaming stack makes these operational responsibilities yours.
- Plan archives separately for long broadcasts. YouTube’s help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived on that basis; confirm current YouTube behavior and make separate recordings if retaining a copy matters.

Common planning mistakes
- Buying by CPU alone: a server can have enough compute but an insufficient transfer allowance. Calculate the feed volume as well as the encoder workload.
- Assuming the VM includes stream operations: a cloud server is infrastructure, not a promise that the encoder will restart, recover credentials, or maintain itself. Plan monitoring and recovery.
- Confusing a streaming stack with managed hosting: SRS adds protocols and streaming features, but deploying it on a host does not transfer administration to a managed provider.
- Treating availability language as a stream guarantee: Hetzner’s 99.9% figure is a contractual monthly commitment subject to terms, not an independent measurement of YouTube stream uptime.
- Assuming a continuous broadcast will produce a complete archive: the cited YouTube guidance covers streams under 12 hours; arrange separate recording for longer-running streams if needed.
