Spoilers ahead: this explanation discusses the film’s play-within-a-play reveal.

Digger is a satire about an oil magnate trying to control the story around a catastrophe his choices helped unleash. Its major twist reframes that story as a staged play, prompting viewers to question not only the powerful figure at its center but also the limits of satire—and the audience’s own distance from the crisis being depicted.

What is Digger about?

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, Digger follows Digger Rockwell, an oil magnate. Warner Bros. describes its central figure as “the most powerful man in the world,” who tries to prove he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he has unleashed destroys everything. The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. (Warner Bros. Pictures)

The film’s fictional crisis begins with warnings from a drilling platform in Greenland about a glacier crack and methane leak. Rockwell responds by encouraging more oil production; the situation escalates as an ice shelf breaks free and moves toward Europe. These are events in the movie’s story, not real-world climate reporting. (Associated Press review)

What is the big twist in Digger?

The central reveal is that the story has been staged as a play. The Associated Press review confirms the play-within-a-play structure and describes it as opening questions about satire and the limits of fiction. It changes how the audience reads the catastrophe and Rockwell’s attempts to cast himself as a savior: the film is also drawing attention to how stories about powerful people and disastrous decisions are performed, framed and consumed.

One interpretation is that the reveal implicates the audience as well as the characters. Viewers may laugh at the absurdity of a powerful man trying to manage a catastrophe he helped cause, while still wondering whether comedy can meaningfully confront the real anxieties beneath the farce. That is a reading of the film’s device, not a confirmed single intended meaning. The AP reviewer characterizes the movie as balancing exaggerated farce with sober anxieties. Who are Curtis and Fuel Fools?

A title-matched explainer published October 3, 2026, adds a more specific account: Cruise is playing an actor named Curtis, who performs Digger Rockwell in a play called Fuel Fools. It also reports further reveals involving the staged production and its backer. The Associated Press independently confirms the broad play reveal, but not these names or additional details; the explainer’s page could not be fetched, so treat its more specific account as unverified rather than as independently established fact. What does the film’s satire mean?

The premise turns a familiar question—who is responsible when powerful people make dangerous choices?—into a question about performance. Rockwell’s public claim to be humanity’s savior sits uneasily beside his response to the warnings. The theatrical frame then invites viewers to consider how fiction can expose those contradictions, and whether making a catastrophe funny risks softening its consequences.

In a July 2026 interview with The Credits, Iñárritu described the film as “absurd,” “dangerous” and “certainly comedic,” adding, “the source of great comedy is tragedy.” He also described Digger as “charming, impossible not to watch.” Those remarks support the film’s tension between comic spectacle and serious subject matter, but they do not settle how every viewer should interpret the ending.
