Diesel is not automatically cheaper than gasoline. Diesel vehicles often travel farther on a gallon, but the better value depends on the specific vehicles, local fuel prices, how far you drive, and what the vehicle must do. Compare fuel cost per mile—not just the price at the pump—and weigh that against the vehicle’s suitability and ownership costs.

Is diesel cheaper than gas?

Not necessarily. Diesel vehicles often use less fuel per mile, but diesel may cost more per gallon. The result varies with the models being compared and the prices in your area, so a general mileage advantage does not prove that a diesel will cost less to own.

For a quick fuel-cost comparison, use each vehicle’s official combined fuel-economy figure and the current local price for its fuel:

  1. Calculate gallons used per year: annual miles driven ÷ combined miles per gallon.
  2. Calculate annual fuel cost: gallons used per year × local price per gallon.
  3. Compare the result for vehicles of similar size and purpose.

Equivalently, compare price per gallon ÷ miles per gallon to estimate fuel cost per mile. Then multiply that figure by your expected annual mileage. Use local pump prices rather than assuming one fuel is always cheaper.

What EPA label prices mean

For model-year 2026 fuel-economy labels, EPA guidance uses $3.30 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.60 per gallon for diesel and calculates annual fuel costs using 15,000 miles. These are standardized label assumptions, not live prices or a forecast for your location. See EPA’s explanation of the fuel-economy label.

Does diesel get better gas mileage?

Often, yes, when comparing similar vehicles. Diesel contains more energy per gallon, which helps explain why diesel vehicles commonly achieve higher fuel economy. EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report, published in February 2026 and covering trends through model year 2024, puts diesel’s energy density at about 15% above gasoline’s.

That is a general fuel-property comparison, not a promise that every diesel vehicle beats every gasoline vehicle. For a useful comparison, check the official combined mpg for the exact models you are considering. EPA recommends using the Fuel Economy and Environment Label and FuelEconomy.gov to compare vehicles.

Which is better for your driving?

Start with the job the vehicle needs to do, then look for comparable models that can do it. Consider passenger-car commuting, towing, hauling, and long-distance travel as distinct needs; fuel economy alone does not tell you whether a vehicle is suitable.

Archoil Diesel Fuel System Kit - AR6400-D (12 oz) + AR6500 (40 oz) - Complete Restoration For All Diesel Engines, Injector Cleaner, Lubricity Improver, DPF & Turbo Deposit Control, Cetane Booster
  • TWO-STEP FUEL SYSTEM RESET: Includes AR6400-D Diesel Fuel System Cleaner + AR6500 Diesel Treatment (40 oz) for a complete clean-and-maintain solution
  • HOW IT WORKS: Use AR6400-D first for a deep clean (12 oz treats 30-40 gallons), then use AR6500 at every fill-up for ongoing protection (40 oz treats up to 400 gallons)
  • FOR ALL DIESEL ENGINES: Suitable for all diesel vehicles and equipment, including modern HPCR systems
  • CLEANS INJECTORS & RESTORES RESPONSE: Removes injector deposits and restores spray patterns for smoother running, improved response, and more efficient combustion
  • IMPROVES LUBRICITY (ASTM D6079): AR6500 is tested to improve lubricity by 43% to protect fuel system components, including wear-sensitive parts like the CP4 pump
  • Passenger-car shopping: Expect fewer diesel choices. In model year 2024, diesel vehicles made up less than 1% of new vehicles produced in the United States, and recent light-duty diesel production was concentrated in pickups, according to EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report.
  • Pickup shopping or demanding work: Compare diesel and gasoline versions that meet the same task requirements. Check the exact vehicle’s specifications and owner’s manual rather than inferring capability from fuel type.
  • Commuting or high annual mileage: Apply your expected mileage and local prices to each model’s official fuel economy. More miles can magnify a per-mile fuel-cost difference, but do not establish a universal payback point.

How do diesel and gasoline compare on emissions?

Per-gallon emissions and per-mile emissions are different comparisons. EPA lists 8,887 grams of CO2 per gallon of gasoline and 10,180 grams per gallon of diesel—about 15% more per gallon for diesel. Because many similar diesel vehicles have higher fuel economy, EPA says that advantage generally offsets the higher carbon content; the actual per-mile comparison depends on the vehicles’ fuel economy. See EPA’s passenger-vehicle emissions fact sheet.

Diesel combustion also produces particulate matter and pollutants that contribute to ground-level ozone. EIA reports that most U.S. vehicle diesel is ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD). It says ULSD used with advanced exhaust controls can reduce particulate emissions by up to 90% and nitrogen-compound emissions by 25% to 50%. Those are reported reduction ranges, not guarantees for every vehicle or operating condition. More detail is available in the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s explanation of petroleum-product uses.

What else belongs in the ownership-cost comparison?

Fuel is only one cost. Compare purchase price, insurance, maintenance, and repair estimates for the specific vehicles. Follow each owner’s manual for service requirements and use model-specific cost information where available. The evidence here does not establish a universal diesel maintenance premium or a mileage at which diesel fuel savings repay a higher upfront cost.

Fuel prices and vehicle availability vary by location and change over time. The EPA figures above describe U.S. guidance and market patterns; they may not apply to another country. Local regulations and vehicle specifications can also affect which option fits.
