Officials ruled John Love’s 36-yard field-goal attempt no good, and Pittsburgh beat Virginia Tech 35–33 at Lane Stadium on October 2, 2026. Fan-posted video angles sparked claims that the Hokies had been “robbed,” but the available reports do not establish that the kick was good. They say the ball crossed above the uprights, making the attempt unreviewable under the NCAA replay rule; the precise application should be checked against the 2026 rulebook.
What happened on the final kick?
With three seconds remaining, Virginia Tech kicker John Love attempted a 36-yard field goal. Officials ruled it no good, leaving Pittsburgh with a 35–33 win. FOX Sports reported the score and the final attempt in its October 3, 2026, account: FOX Sports’ game report.
The finish took place at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg on Friday, October 2. The official result was a Pittsburgh victory; there was no successful Virginia Tech kick later overturned after a review.
Was the kick good, or did Virginia Tech get robbed?
The footage circulated by fans prompted competing interpretations. Some angles appeared to show the ball inside the left upright, while others seemed consistent with the no-good ruling. OutKick’s October 3 report described the angles as ambiguous: OutKick’s account of the disputed kick.

A camera view can be misleading if it does not show the ball’s path relative to the plane of the uprights. Its position in the frame, the camera’s position relative to the goalposts, and whether the ball is at or above upright height all matter. The reports describe the disagreement, but do not independently establish the ball’s trajectory. Crowd or player reactions are not a substitute for a view that clearly shows that path.
“Robbed” is a fan reaction, not a verified finding of officiating error. Based on the available reporting, it is not possible to conclude that the ball went through, or that officials made the wrong call.

Why wasn’t the call reviewed?
OutKick reported that the kick was not reviewable because the ball passed above the uprights. Its article quotes NCAA replay language that allows review of a field-goal attempt when the ball is ruled below or above the crossbar, or inside or outside the uprights while lower than the top of the uprights. It says a ball higher than the uprights as it crosses the end line may not be reviewed. Read its explanation alongside the NCAA football rules and 2026 instant replay case-book portal.
That is the reporting’s explanation of this play, not an independently confirmed ruling under the exact 2026 rule text. The NCAA portal is the primary place to check the applicable rulebook; a historical NCAA document also contains a similar restriction, but it does not establish the exact wording in force for this game: historical NCAA FBS rules document. Do not assume NFL replay language applies: OutKick notes a difference between the NFL and NCAA rulebooks.

What did Virginia Tech coach James Franklin say?
A secondary page reproducing a New York Post report attributes this response to Franklin when asked about the kick: “To be honest with you, from my angle, I don’t know.” The same page says Franklin praised Love and noted that the officials’ ruling was final. Because the quote is available here through a republished account rather than a verified original transcript or recording, it should be treated as secondhand: the page reproducing the attributed Franklin remarks.
