A Reddit user reported that an ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4080’s hotspot temperature fell from about 100°C to 79°C after replacing the card’s stock thermal compound with PTM7950. HotHardware reported the claim on April 18, 2026, but it was a single user’s account—not a controlled or independently verified test.

What the reported 20°C drop means

HotHardware’s headline rounds the reported change to about 20°C. The user’s stated readings—approximately 100°C before and 79°C after—imply a difference of about 21°C. These are reported hotspot readings, not GPU core-temperature readings, and they should not be treated as a benchmark result.

The card was described as an ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4080. HotHardware expressed uncertainty about the exact variant, so the report does not establish that it was a particular model number or definitively rule out every variant.

What the user changed—and what they noticed

The Reddit user, khobiza, said they removed the stock thermal compound and applied PTM7950, a phase-change thermal interface material. They described the result after one gaming session and also reported quieter fans and more stable-feeling temperatures. Those observations come from the user’s account quoted by HotHardware.

  • Size 40x80x0.25mm, Phase change, Thermal Conductivity: 8W/m.K,
  • PTM7950 is a proprietary material that provides superior reliability and maintains low thermal impedance (<0.06K·cm²/W @ 30Psi), making the PTM7950 series desirable for high performance integrated circuit devices.
  • PTM7950, based on a novel polymer PCM system, exhibits excellent interface wetability during typical operating temperature ranges, resulting in extremely low surface contact resistance.
  • Package include: 1x Thermal Pad 40x80x0.25mm, 1x Phillips Screwdriver, 1x Cleaning Wipe, 1x Spatula, Finger gloves, 1x Cleaning Brush

The report provides no controlled test protocol, matching before-and-after conditions, repeated runs, or independent validation. It therefore cannot show how much of the change came from PTM7950 itself. Replacing old, degraded, or poorly applied stock compound could also explain some or all of an improvement after a repaste.

Can other RTX 4080 owners expect the same result?

No. This account concerns one card and one reported session; it does not establish a typical result for RTX 4080 graphics cards or PTM7950. The report does not resolve whether the before-and-after readings used the same workload, ambient temperature, fan settings, or measurement method. Nor does it compare GPU core and hotspot readings under controlled conditions.

HotHardware also discussed a separate earlier investigation involving thermal-compound degradation on a Manli RTX 4080. That is separate context, not evidence that this ASUS card had the same issue.

What to know about PTM7950 listings

HotHardware noted that genuine Honeywell PTM7950 can be difficult to find and mentioned a JOYJOM phase-change thermal interface sheet described as 40×80×0.25 mm. That dated listing mention does not authenticate current listings, establish that a particular sheet is genuine Honeywell material, or confirm compatibility with every graphics card. If evaluating a PTM7950 phase-change thermal pad or other GPU thermal interface sheet, verify the seller’s claims and the material’s suitability for the specific card rather than assuming the named listing is validated.
