Nvidia delayed broad independent testing of the GeForce RTX 5060 until its May 19, 2025 retail launch by withholding or restricting access to pre-release drivers. That meant many reviewers could not publish their own launch-day benchmarks. The delay limited scrutiny, but the available evidence does not establish that Nvidia did it to conceal weak performance.

What happened with RTX 5060 review drivers?

Nvidia announced the RTX 5060 family on April 15, 2025, saying desktop cards would arrive in May and start at $299. The company promoted the Blackwell-based cards’ DLSS 4, ray tracing and neural-rendering features, and said DLSS 4 was supported in more than 100 games. Those were Nvidia’s product claims, not independent performance findings.

On May 8, Tom’s Hardware reported that reviewers were being denied pre-release drivers ahead of the May 19 launch. TechSpot said it and several other outlets—including Hardware Unboxed, HardwareLuxx, PC Games Hardware and Igor’s Lab—had been told they would not receive drivers until launch. PC Gamer reported that it had an RTX 5060 supplied by MSI but could not test it as intended without a driver.

Date What was reported or announced
April 15, 2025 Nvidia announced the RTX 5060 family, a $299 starting price and a May desktop arrival.
May 8, 2025 Tom’s Hardware reported reviewers were being denied pre-release drivers; other outlets described similar restrictions.
May 19, 2025 Nvidia released the public Game Ready driver required for RTX 5060 desktop and laptop GPUs, and desktop cards went on sale.

Tom’s Hardware described the arrangement as a departure from the usual one-to-two-week testing window: selected outlets received restricted preview access, while broader testing began on launch day. Access was therefore uneven, not simply a case of every reviewer receiving the same advance testing opportunity.

Why does withholding a driver affect reviews?

A graphics card needs compatible software for a review system to recognize and use it correctly. TechSpot noted that without the appropriate driver, a PC may not recognize the GPU or produce reliable benchmark results. A reviewer who has a physical card but cannot install the needed driver does not have the conditions required for a dependable performance review.

That makes driver availability part of review access. When the general driver arrives at retail launch, reviewers who lacked it beforehand can only begin broad testing then; readers may see fewer independent results on the day a product becomes available to buy.

What did the restricted preview show—and not show?

Tom’s Hardware reported restricted-preview results in Marvel Rivals showing the RTX 5060 16% faster than the RTX 4060, 48% faster than the RTX 3060 and 85% faster than the RTX 2060 under that preview’s test conditions. Those figures are a narrow data point, not a guarantee of gains across games, resolutions, settings or review systems. They also do not substitute for broad testing with unrestricted drivers.

Tom’s Hardware also reported 3,840 CUDA cores, a 25% increase over the RTX 4060. Core count alone does not establish real-world performance. For a buying decision, look for independent tests across a range of games and workloads, including rasterized and ray-traced results, and examine whether reported gains rely on DLSS or frame generation.

Does the delay prove Nvidia was hiding poor performance?

No. The reports establish that access to pre-release drivers was restricted and that this prevented many outlets from publishing independent launch-day tests. PC Gamer characterized the move as unprecedented in its experience and said it blocked some media from having day-one critiques ready. That supports criticism of the timing and transparency.

It does not establish why Nvidia made the decision. Saying the company “hid” the RTX 5060 is defensible as a description of the effect—independent scrutiny was delayed—but claiming the company intended to conceal bad performance goes beyond the evidence. The restricted preview’s reported result cannot prove either that the card is strong overall or that the launch delay was motivated by weakness.

Should you buy an RTX 5060 without waiting for reviews?

If you are considering one, treat controlled previews as incomplete and compare full independent reviews before paying. Check the exact model’s price and availability, rather than assuming the announced $299 starting price is the price of every card or the price you will find at retail.

  • Look for broad independent benchmark coverage, not just a single game result.
  • Compare raster and ray-tracing performance with the RTX 4060, RTX 5060 Ti and relevant AMD alternatives at the resolution and settings you use.
  • Check how the card’s 8GB of VRAM behaves in the games you play, especially at higher resolutions or with demanding texture settings.
  • Separate native rendering results from results that depend on DLSS, frame generation or other upscaling features.
  • Compare the actual street price against alternatives; a $299 announced starting price does not make every RTX 5060 a good value at any price.
  • Consider driver maturity and whether the tested games and workloads match your needs.

The key buyer question is not whether Nvidia’s preview can be repeated, but whether a wide set of independent tests shows a worthwhile advantage at the price of the specific card available to you.
