What Microsoft’s $100,000 offer covered
In July 2013, Microsoft introduced its Mitigation Bypass Bounty. It offered up to $100,000 for a truly novel exploitation technique that defeated protections in the then-current Windows 8.1 Preview. The target was not simply any Windows bug: the program sought a way around operating-system defenses. Microsoft’s announcement described the offer as a maximum, not a guaranteed payment.
Microsoft also announced a separate BlueHat Bonus for Defense, offering up to $50,000 for an effective defense against such techniques. That was a distinct award track for defensive work, not an additional $50,000 attached automatically to a successful bypass report. The announcement said the Internet Explorer 11 Preview bounty had recently closed; the mitigation-bypass and defense programs were ongoing at that time. Microsoft reported no submissions to those latter programs as of the July 2013 post, a snapshot that says nothing about later participation.
Did a researcher actually collect $100,000?
The official announcement establishes the offer and its ceiling, but does not identify a researcher who received the full $100,000. On the evidence available here, it is accurate to say Microsoft offered a bounty of up to $100,000; it is not accurate to state as fact that a hacker was paid that amount for finding the technique.

This distinction matters with bug bounties generally: a headline maximum is a program rule, while an actual payout requires evidence of a qualifying submission and an award. Microsoft’s current bounty page likewise describes program ceilings, not proof that a particular researcher has received the maximum.
How the 2013 offer compares with Microsoft’s current bounty ceilings
Microsoft’s published bounty tracks have changed since 2013. The figures below are the maxima shown on its live bounty page when checked on October 4, 2026; they are ceilings subject to each program’s scope, eligibility rules, and assessment.

These tracks are not directly interchangeable: the 2013 program focused on bypassing operating-system mitigations, while current programs reward qualifying reports within the products, services, and rules Microsoft lists for each track. Microsoft’s vulnerability-response document says the company added cloud services to its bounty program, began offering higher rewards for cross-tenant reports in 2021, announced an AI bounty in 2023, and has used some programs to reward findings in pre-general-availability products. What Microsoft expects from a current bounty report
Researchers considering a report should follow the live program’s scope and rules rather than assume that terms from the 2013 offer still apply. Microsoft says clear reproduction steps, proof-of-concept code, and detailed analysis of impact help its review and may qualify a report for a higher award. It asks researchers to report privately under coordinated vulnerability disclosure; its page states, “Follow Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure.” Microsoft bounty page

- Check that the product, vulnerability type, and testing method are in scope for the specific program.
- Include reproducible steps, a proof of concept where appropriate, and an explanation of impact.
- Do not access or exfiltrate customer data, modify data, or disrupt services while testing.
- Submit privately and follow the program’s coordinated-disclosure requirements.
Microsoft’s FAQ says MSRC and engineering teams assess reports by reproducing the issue and evaluating severity and impact. It describes review as typically about two weeks in one answer and typically 14 business days in another, so neither wording should be treated as a guaranteed response deadline. Awards and eligibility are Microsoft’s decision; duplicate reports are generally not eligible, although new information may merit a differential award. Microsoft MSRC FAQ
When Microsoft permits public discussion
An award does not necessarily mean a fix has been released. Microsoft’s FAQ says a bounty can be awarded before remediation is complete, so payment should not be read as confirmation that a vulnerability is fixed. The FAQ says the company generally recommends waiting at least 30 days after a fix before public discussion. It also allows high-level descriptions and non-reversible demonstrations after the vulnerability has been fixed: “You can make available high-level descriptions of your research and non-reversible demonstrations after the vulnerability is fixed.” Microsoft MSRC FAQ

A separate 2026 disclosure dispute is not evidence of a bounty payout
In a separate story, TechCrunch reported on May 29, 2026, that Microsoft criticized researcher Nightmare Eclipse for publicly disclosing unpatched bugs, including issues affecting Windows Defender and BitLocker. The report presents competing positions about that disclosure dispute; it does not connect it to the 2013 mitigation-bypass program or establish a bounty payment. TechCrunch, May 29, 2026
