Yes—LG’s remaining Blu-ray player lineup was reported discontinued in December 2024, and LG’s U.S. product pages mark the UBK80 and UBK90 as discontinued. Reports said production had stopped and remaining retailer stock would not be replenished. That supports an exit from the lineup, but does not prove LG has ruled out returning to the category globally.

What LG’s discontinuation means

LG’s U.S. product pages list both of its remaining 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players—the UBK80 and UBK90—as “DISCONTINUED.” LG’s UBK80 page and LG’s UBK90 page confirm those models’ status in the U.S.; they do not establish the status of every regional model or SKU.

In December 2024, MobileSyrup and Ars Technica reported that LG had stopped production and would not replenish third-party stock. MobileSyrup’s December 12 report, citing FlatpanelsHD, also said LG Korea had not definitively confirmed a permanent global withdrawal and left open a possible return if demand improved. The most precise conclusion is that LG discontinued its remaining players and reportedly stopped making them—not that it made an irrevocable promise never to sell a player again. MobileSyrup’s report and Ars Technica’s report describe the December 2024 news.

Can you still buy an LG UBK80 or UBK90?

Possibly, but discontinuation does not tell you whether a particular retailer has stock now. Remaining listings may be leftover inventory or used units, and the December 2024 reports do not establish current availability. Check the seller’s actual stock, the unit’s condition, return terms, and total price before ordering.

Before buying either player, confirm that its disc-region compatibility fits your collection and that its connections suit your setup. The product specifications below are manufacturer-listed, not independently tested. For the UBK90, check LG’s product page; for the UBK80, check LG’s product page.

UBK80 vs. UBK90: what is different?

Feature LG UBK80 LG UBK90
Ultra HD Blu-ray playback Yes Yes
HDR formats listed by LG HDR10 HDR10 and Dolby Vision
Video and audio disc formats listed 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and audio CD Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and audio CD
HDMI outputs, per 2018 LG specification sheet One Two; one intended for audio only
Other listed playback 3D Blu-ray/DVD and USB playback Not stated in the cited 2018 product sheet

The practical distinction is HDR support: LG lists Dolby Vision as well as HDR10 for the UBK90, while the UBK80 specifications list HDR10. Both are 4K Ultra HD disc players. If your display and discs use Dolby Vision, the UBK90 is the model to check; otherwise, compare the exact connectivity and format needs of your system rather than assuming the higher model is a better fit in every setup. LG’s model details appear on the UBK80 page, UBK90 page, 2018 UBK80 specification sheet, and 2018 UBK90 product sheet.

Does the Gracenote service change stop disc playback?

No. LG’s U.S. support announcement index separately lists a November 7, 2024 notice ending Gracenote Music ID, Video ID, and eyeQ EPG services for Blu-ray player and Blu-ray home theater products. That service change concerns those online identification and program-guide features; it is distinct from the players’ ability to play physical discs. LG’s U.S. support announcements lists the notice.

Why did LG leave the player market?

Reported market figures show why the category faced pressure, but they do not establish LG’s specific reason for discontinuing its players. Ars Technica cited Consumer Technology Association data showing U.S. Blu-ray unit sales peaked at 884,000 in 2017. It also cited Digital Entertainment Group figures for the first half of 2024: combined Blu-ray and DVD sales fell 22.2%, while SteelBook sales rose 44% and 4K UHD Blu-ray catalog sales rose 16%. These figures cover different market segments, so they do not mean every kind of physical media was declining. Ars Technica’s account of the figures attributes them to the respective trade organizations.

What to consider if you need another player

LG’s discontinuation makes current stock and support important considerations, but it does not by itself establish which replacement is best. Ars Technica reported in December 2024 that Panasonic and Sony continued selling players and mentioned a Magnetar UPD900 release. That report is not evidence of current model availability or comparative performance, so verify present listings and specifications before choosing an alternative.
