The $10 billion figure was a 2022 estimate of losses for Amazon’s Alexa and related-device operation—not an audited loss for Alexa alone. The “colossal failure” phrase came from a former Amazon employee quoted in the same reporting, not from an official company finding. Amazon’s subsequent answer has been Alexa+, a generative-AI assistant that Amazon says is available across the United States as of September 1, 2026.
What the $10 billion figure actually measured
A 2022 Business Insider report, republished by Yahoo Finance, said Amazon was on pace to lose about $10 billion that year on Alexa and related devices. That was an estimate attributed to people familiar with the operation; it was not a separately reported, audited Alexa-only result.
The same reporting cited a different figure: Amazon’s broader Worldwide Digital unit lost more than $3 billion in operating income in the first quarter of 2022. That unit included Echo smart speakers, Alexa and Prime Video, so its quarterly result cannot be treated as Alexa’s standalone loss—or directly substituted for the $10 billion full-year pace estimate.
Why the “colossal failure” label appeared
A former Amazon employee told Insider, “Alexa is a colossal failure of imagination.” The employee also described it as “a wasted opportunity.” Those are the former employee’s judgments, not Amazon’s characterization of Alexa or an accounting conclusion about the $10 billion estimate.

Why Alexa struggled to make money
Insider’s interviews described low morale, weak user and developer engagement, and monetization efforts that had not worked well. Amazon put Echo devices in homes to build an audience for Alexa, but common tasks such as checking the weather, setting timers and playing music did not by themselves create a strong recurring revenue stream. The reporting does not establish that hardware subsidies or manufacturing costs alone caused the estimated losses.
A May 2024 report summarizing CNBC said Amazon had sold more than 500 million Alexa-enabled devices as of 2023, while Alexa still had not produced an ongoing revenue stream. At that time, Amazon was reportedly considering a generative-AI upgrade and a monthly fee. That was reporting about plans then; it was not confirmation of final pricing or product terms.

What Alexa+ changed—and what it costs in the U.S.
Amazon announced Alexa+ in February 2025 as a generative-AI assistant. The initial U.S. rollout was planned in waves, first targeting households with Echo Show 8, 10, 15 and 21 devices. Amazon’s September 1, 2026 update says Alexa+ is now available to everyone in the United States.
| U.S. customer | Alexa+ access described by Amazon on September 1, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Prime member | Unlimited Alexa+ at no additional cost. |
| Non-Prime customer | A limited free chat tier, or $19.99 per month for unlimited access. |
These are Amazon’s stated U.S. terms as of that update. The $19.99 monthly price was also the price Amazon announced in February 2025, but the September 2026 update is the relevant source for the current availability and plan description. The terms above do not establish availability or pricing in other countries.

Do you need to buy a new Echo for Alexa+?
Not necessarily. Amazon says Alexa+ can be accessed through Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app, so Echo hardware is not the only access route. However, the original rollout named specific Echo Show models, and the available information does not give a complete compatibility list for every existing Echo generation or feature. Check Amazon’s current device-compatibility details before buying hardware or assuming an older device supports every Alexa+ capability.
What Alexa+ can connect to
Amazon’s current product description says Alexa+ can connect with services and devices including Philips Hue, Roborock, OpenTable, Uber Eats, Spotify and Apple Music. These are Amazon’s product claims; actual features and integrations can vary by region and service. Alexa+ therefore represents a move beyond the original voice assistant, but the listed connections alone do not establish how well it performs compared with competing assistants.
