For most home devices, use DHCP. If a device needs a predictable address on your local network, set a DHCP reservation on your router when it supports one. Configure a manual static IP only when you have a specific need and can keep that address outside the range your DHCP server may assign to other devices.

What is the difference between DHCP and a static IP?

DHCP is a client/server system: a device asks the DHCP server—usually your home router—for network settings, and the server leases an available address. It can also provide the subnet mask, default gateway, and options such as DNS server addresses. Microsoft explains how DHCP supplies and manages this configuration in its Windows Server DHCP overview.

A manual static IP is entered directly on the device and remains configured until someone changes it. Along with the address, you need appropriate network settings, including the subnet mask, gateway, and DNS. Microsoft’s DHCP deployment guidance describes the planning needed for manually configured addresses.

DHCP addresses are leased; they do not necessarily change every time a device reconnects. A lease can persist in practice, but DHCP does not promise the device will always receive the same address.

Compare the three options

Option Setup and address consistency Dependency and main risk
DHCP The server supplies network settings centrally. The address is leased and may be reassigned. Assignment and renewal depend on a working DHCP server.
DHCP reservation Configure the association on the router or DHCP server; the client stays set to obtain its configuration automatically. The server assigns that client a consistent address. The client must support DHCP and still depends on the server. The reservation can be managed centrally.
Manual static IP Enter and maintain the address and related settings on the device. It stays configured until changed. Requires subnet and DHCP-pool planning. An address that overlaps the DHCP pool may also be assigned to another client, causing a conflict.

Microsoft describes reservations as preset addresses associated with a client, which can be identified by its network interface’s MAC address. See Microsoft’s DHCP scopes guidance for reservations and exclusions.

When should you use each one?

Use DHCP for ordinary home devices

For phones, laptops, tablets, and other typical clients, DHCP is the simplest default. The server supplies settings centrally, so you do not have to enter or maintain them on each device.

Use a reservation when a local address needs to be predictable

A reservation is useful when a local service or management task depends on knowing a device’s address. The device remains a DHCP client; the router or server associates it with the reserved address. This avoids manually entering network settings on the device, while still requiring a functioning DHCP server.

Use a manual static IP only for a defined need

A manually configured address can suit a device or network arrangement that specifically requires one, provided someone can maintain the address plan. Microsoft documents static addressing for servers alongside DHCP leases for client computers in an enterprise network design; that example is not a requirement for home users to configure every device manually. How to avoid a duplicate-address conflict

The key risk with manual configuration is assigning an address that the DHCP server can also lease. If two devices use the same local address, they can experience a duplicate-address conflict. Microsoft recommends excluding manually assigned addresses from the DHCP scope. Its example scope and exclusion values are illustrations, not universal home-router defaults.

  1. Check your router’s LAN subnet and current DHCP pool. Router menus and labels vary by manufacturer, model, and firmware.
  2. If the device and router support it, create a DHCP reservation on the router or server and leave the device set to obtain its network configuration automatically.
  3. If you need a manual static address, choose one that fits your own subnet and is excluded from the DHCP pool. Enter the appropriate subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings on the device.
  4. If you change the router’s pool or reservation settings, verify that the device receives the intended address and that no other client is using it.

Do not assume an address is safe because it appears in an example or is common on another network; check your own router’s configuration first.

A local IP is not your public IP

A stable address assigned to a device inside your home network is different from the public-facing address of your internet connection. Microsoft lists the RFC 1918 private ranges as 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16, and explains that private addresses are not directly routable on the public Internet. A home router’s public-facing connection is separate from the local address it assigns to a household device.

What DHCP or a static IP will not do

Choosing a manual static address does not, by itself, increase internet speed or fix Wi-Fi dropouts. The cited configuration guidance supports comparing the options by how settings are managed, whether an address stays consistent, dependence on a DHCP server, and the risk of address conflicts—not by speed or inherent security.
