For developers looking for opportunities in October 2026, Hacktoberfest is the active open-source AI program, while Pear Prime 2027 is accepting applications through January 4, 2027. The announced $20,000 TON AI-agent hackathon ran March 11–25, 2026, so that edition has passed; its relationship to a separately named event, Graph Hacks: Context for AI Agents, is not established.

At a glance: which opportunity fits?

What can developers do for Hacktoberfest 2026?

Hacktoberfest is a free, month-long October program focused this year on open-source AI and open-weight models. MLH and DEV manage it with DigitalOcean. The official program describes more than 300 in-person and online Fests worldwide.

The format is different from the familiar pull-request-count model: pull requests and merge requests do not count toward rewards. Instead, participants can take part in online challenges, livestream check-ins, Global Hack Week activities, surveys, and tool tasks.

Online challenges and dates

DEV Challenges include a launch weekend from October 2–4, followed by four weekly rounds:

Online activities are the practical option if there is no nearby event or travel is inconvenient. Check the relevant challenge page for its task, participation requirements, and any reward conditions.

Local Fests and Hack Days

A Fest is a free, one-day event, but the program can vary by location. At a Hack Day, attendees build with open-weight models or open-source AI tools and demo their work at the end; bring a laptop. Other Fests may be meetups with talks and workshops rather than build competitions. Check the individual Fest listing for capacity, age requirements, judging, and swag details before attending.

Is the $20K AI-agent hackathon still open?

No—not the March 2026 edition described in the TON Foundation community announcement. It was scheduled for March 11–25, 2026, and its announced competition window has passed. The announcement described a $20,000 total prize pool divided into two $10,000 tracks:

  • Agent infrastructure: wallet integrations, coordination, payments, developer tools, and core infrastructure.
  • User-facing agents: agents that users or other agents interact with inside Telegram.

The event identity is not fully clear. A DEV search result for this edition names “Graph Hacks: Context for AI Agents,” but the available result does not establish that it is the same competition or provide matching organizer, date, or prize rules. Treat the TON announcement and Graph Hacks as unconfirmed matches, not as one verified event. Anyone considering a future or separate competition should confirm its organizer, dates, country eligibility, submission rules, judging criteria, and online or in-person format on an official rules page.

Who should apply for Pear Prime 2027?

Pear Prime is accepting applications for a deliberately small cohort of exceptional computer science students, new graduates, and early-career engineers. Applications close January 4, 2027. Pear does not state an acceptance rate in the available program information, so applicants should not infer their odds from the cohort’s small size.

What the program offers

Pear advertises access to teams at companies including Cerebras, Etched, Perplexity, HeyGen, and Baseten, as well as early-stage Pear companies. The program also offers a peer community, ongoing career coaching from Pear’s Talent team, investor guidance, and priority consideration for PearX if a participant later starts a company. Priority consideration is not a guarantee of admission.

Pear says past Prime Engineers have gone on to companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Sierra, Vals AI, and Cardless. These are program-reported examples, not an independently audited placement statistic.

How to prepare an application

The stated target is candidates who can demonstrate unusual technical excellence, agency, curiosity, and a clear vision. Relevant evidence may come from projects, research, internships, open source, or entrepreneurship. Make the work concrete: explain what you built or investigated, what you personally contributed, and what you learned. The published information does not establish a specific application checklist beyond the program’s eligibility and selection description.
