Detroit-area robots have been used or piloted for several public-service jobs, but the best-documented examples are specific: a remote-controlled machine designed to sift beach sand, contractor-operated remote-controlled mowers on freeway landscaping, and robots used in food-scrap collection pilots. Snow removal has also been mentioned in secondary coverage, but available reporting does not identify the machine, operator, location or dates. These projects are not all fully autonomous, and reports from 2024 to 2026 do not establish that every deployment is still operating.
What the robots have been reported doing
| Task | Machine and control | Evidence and reported status |
|---|---|---|
| Beach litter cleanup | BeBot, an electric-powered, remote-controlled beach sifter | Axios Detroit reported an announced Belle Isle Beach pilot in April 2024, with a planned start on Earth Day, April 22. The announcement is not evidence of current operation. |
| Freeway landscaping | Remote-controlled lawn mowers operated by a contractor | WWJ reported five mowers in use in July 2025 to maintain freeway landscaping. Its report said the city’s General Services Department was responsible for more than 240 miles of freeway. |
| Food-scrap collection | Ottonomy robots used with collection and dispatch partners | Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) reported a four-week pilot launched in mid-June 2024. A separate Eastern Market effort was described by Axios in January 2026. |
| Snow clearing | Not identified in the available secondary report | Futurism’s July 2025 summary of Crain’s Detroit reporting mentioned snow removal, but the available account does not establish a machine, operator, location, date or performance details. |
The examples involve different tasks, equipment and operating arrangements. The term “robot” does not mean that each machine navigates or works without a person controlling or overseeing it.
Where robots have been used for cleanup and maintenance
Belle Isle: sifting beach sand for litter
Axios Detroit reported in April 2024 that Detroit announced a BeBot trash-removal pilot for Belle Isle Beach. The electric-powered machine is remote-controlled and sifts sand to collect ordinary litter and plastic pieces at least 1 centimeter in size. Axios reported that a $150,000 grant from the Clorox Company funded the pilot. The expected April 22, 2024 start date was an announcement, not confirmation of ongoing service.
Freeways: remote-controlled mowing
In a July 17, 2025 report, WWJ Newsradio 950 said five remote-controlled lawn mowers were being used by the city’s landscaping contractor. The report described the General Services Department’s responsibility as more than 240 miles of freeway. Contractor Terry Payne said operators walked behind the machines using remote controls. He described the distance from the mower as a safety benefit around freeway slopes, telling WWJ: “You could be safe 50 feet from it and you still can operate it.” That is Payne’s explanation, not the result of a controlled comparison of safety or productivity.

Designed for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care.
How Detroit-area food-scrap robot projects worked
The Transportation Innovation Zone pilot
Detroit’s 2024 community engagement plan described a proposed autonomous food-waste pickup pilot. It said pickup locations and routes would depend on signups and community feedback. That document establishes what was planned, not that every proposed route or pickup arrangement was carried out.
Michigan EGLE later reported that Scrap Soils and Orange Sparkle Ball developed a four-week pilot using Ottonomy robots as part of Scrap Soils’ collection service. The pilot launched in mid-June 2024 in Detroit’s Transportation Innovation Zone. The robots delivered food scraps to Brother Nature Produce’s urban farm, where Scrap Soils composted them. In EGLE’s July 2025 account, Scrap Soils founder and CEO Ricky Blanding described the partners’ work as combining Orange Sparkle Ball’s autonomous-mobility experience with Scrap Soils’ community collection goals.

Eastern Market: a dispatch platform for small electric vehicles
Axios Detroit reported on January 30, 2026, that Orange Sparkle Ball’s Penny Pickup platform dispatched the smallest electric vehicle suited to a given load, which could be a sidewalk robot or a cargo bike. Founder Meaghan Kennedy told Axios that the project had completed more than 40 pickups and saved an estimated 600 pounds of emissions. The pickup count and emissions figure are company-reported; the emissions figure was an estimate, not an independent measurement in the report.
At the time of that January 2026 report, expansion to cardboard and a test of an autonomous pallet mover were plans, not completed results.

Snow clearing and shuttle charging: what is and is not established
Snow removal and on-demand charging for shuttle buses appeared in Futurism’s July 2025 summary of Crain’s Detroit reporting. The available account does not name a robot or operator, give a deployment date or location, or provide details that would establish how the work was controlled or how well it performed. Treat these as reported examples, not as documented deployments with verified specifications.
Similarly, the City of Detroit’s July 2025 announcement about The Connect concerned an autonomous passenger-shuttle pilot returning after upgrades. The city said trained safety operators would remain present as autonomous service was introduced. That is a mobility program, not evidence of a robot collecting garbage or maintaining landscaping.

Not every smart-city project is a robot
Detroit’s Department of Public Works announced two fully electric solid-waste collection trucks and a bus-stop recycling pilot in September 2025. The recycling pilot covered 42 locations across the city’s seven council districts. These initiatives relate to waste and cleanliness, but they are not evidence of robots doing the collection work.
Detroit’s earlier mobility experiments include a 2021 Michigan announcement of a Corktown Kiwibot sidewalk-delivery pilot, with up to five robots and a human supervisor. That provides context for the region’s experimentation with mobile robots, but delivery is distinct from the cleanup and maintenance tasks described above.

What the reports do not show
The cited reports do not provide a common independent measure for comparing cost, productivity, emissions or safety across beach cleaning, mowing and food-scrap collection. The projects use different equipment and serve different purposes, so the reported activity counts and announcements cannot establish that robots are generally cheaper, safer or more effective than conventional methods. Nor do reports published from 2024 through 2026 confirm that every pilot or deployment remains active now.
