Apicurio Studio was a browser-based visual tool for designing API contracts before implementation, but it is no longer maintained as a standalone project. Apicurio says its editing experience moved into Apicurio Registry as the opt-in Designer feature, so teams starting a workflow today should evaluate Registry Designer rather than deploy the old Studio application.

What Apicurio Studio was designed to do

Studio supported contract-first API development: define an API contract separately from its implementation, then use that design as a basis for development. The browser-based suite let users create designs from templates, edit imported designs, browse and organize designs, and import content from a local file, a URL, or an Apicurio Registry instance. The Studio introduction describes these workflows.

API and schema formats

Studio documentation lists OpenAPI and AsyncAPI for API designs, along with Apache Avro, JSON Schema, and Google Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) for schemas. That makes its documented scope relevant to both REST-style API contracts and event-driven API designs. The documentation also describes generating Quarkus-based client and server applications from Studio designs; this is a documented capability, not a guarantee about compatibility with a particular current project setup.

Is Apicurio Studio still maintained?

No. On October 23, 2025, Apicurio announced that standalone Studio was fully deprecated and that the project would focus on Apicurio Registry instead of maintaining two separate projects. Its original repository is archived and read-only. The Studio product page also carries a deprecation notice; any version label visible there should not be treated as evidence of a currently supported standalone release.

The old standalone quickstart describes a local WildFly setup with an H2 database. It identifies its authentication setup as suitable for local evaluation, not production. Treat those instructions as legacy: anyone keeping an existing installation should reassess security and migration needs rather than reuse the quickstart as a current production deployment guide.

What to use now: Apicurio Registry Designer

Apicurio integrated Studio’s core editing experience into Apicurio Registry 3.1.0 as an opt-in Designer feature. The Registry 3.2.x migration guide describes Designer as a visual editor for OpenAPI 3.x and AsyncAPI specifications. Designs are stored directly in Registry, which avoids running a separate Studio deployment, and the editing workflow uses draft artifact versions.

Enable draft editing

The migration guide says Designer requires artifact-version content mutability. The documented configuration property is:

apicurio.rest.mutability.artifact-version-content.enabled=true

With this enabled, users with developer or admin roles can create and edit draft versions, save iterative changes, and finalize drafts into immutable versions. Before applying the setting, confirm the exact Registry version, deployment configuration, and authorization setup in the Registry migration guide. The guide establishes the integrated direction, but not a full operational comparison with every legacy Studio deployment.

Choosing between a legacy installation and Designer

For a new workflow, Registry Designer is the maintained direction identified by Apicurio. Whether an existing team can move immediately depends on its Registry version, configuration, access controls, and artifact lifecycle needs.

Decision point Legacy standalone Studio Registry Designer
Project status Deprecated; repository archived and read-only. Repository status Integrated into Apicurio Registry as an opt-in feature. Deprecation announcement
Deployment model Old quickstart describes a separate local WildFly and H2 setup; it is legacy documentation. Quickstart Designer stores designs directly in Registry; no separate Studio deployment is needed. Migration guide
Editing prerequisites Not established as a current supported path by the archived documentation. Artifact-version content mutability must be enabled; developer or admin roles can edit drafts. Migration guide
Documented design formats OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, Avro, JSON Schema, and Protobuf. Studio introduction Visual editing for OpenAPI 3.x and AsyncAPI specifications. Migration guide
Operational cost or full feature parity Not stated in the official sources cited here. Not stated in the official sources cited here.

Before deciding, check whether your team needs Registry-backed draft and artifact lifecycle management, identify the Registry version available to you, and review the authorization and deployment configuration. The published material supports the migration direction but does not establish a complete feature-by-feature or cost comparison.

When Studio documentation is still useful

Studio’s documentation can still explain the original contract-first workflow and historical format support. It also documents importing existing designs from files, URLs, and Registry instances. Use it as a reference when interpreting older projects, not as evidence that every old feature or setup is supported in the integrated Designer today.
