Dell announced at CES in January 2025 that it would replace familiar PC branding such as XPS, Inspiron and Latitude with Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max families. A year later, Dell reversed course on key parts of that plan: in January 2026 it brought back XPS for premium consumer laptops and Precision for demanding professional work. The naming story is therefore a two-step change, not a permanent disappearance of XPS.

What Dell announced at CES 2025

On January 7, 2025, ServeTheHome reported Dell’s plan to reorganize its PC branding around three names: Dell for consumer PCs, Dell Pro for professional PCs and Dell Pro Max for high-performance PCs. Dell’s own January 2025 announcement described the move as a unified AI PC portfolio. ServeTheHome’s January 2025 report and Dell’s launch announcement document the original plan.

The names and tiers in the original plan

The proposal replaced established line names in the new portfolio branding, including XPS, Inspiron and Latitude. Dell Plus and Dell Premium were tiers within the consumer range; Dell said Premium would carry forward the XPS legacy. Dell Pro was aimed at professional PCs, while Dell Pro Max covered higher-performance systems.

This was an announced branding framework, not evidence that every product listing or existing device name changed at once. Dell’s 2025 materials described how the company intended to organize its portfolio, rather than establishing a universal cutoff for older models or regional listings.

Why the names mattered to customers

Names such as XPS, Inspiron and Latitude had served as recognizable signposts for different Dell PC lines. Replacing them with broader corporate labels could make it less obvious where a familiar model fit, or what to search for when comparing listings. Comments on the original ServeTheHome article raised concerns about distinguishing products and finding specific models online; those comments illustrate individual reactions, not a measured customer response.

Dell’s stated rationale in its 2025 launch materials was to unify its AI PC portfolio under a more straightforward brand structure. That was the company’s framing of the change; it does not by itself establish how well customers understood or adopted the new labels.

What Dell changed in January 2026

On January 6, 2026, Dell said XPS was returning as its definitive premium consumer laptop brand, replacing the Dell Premium name. Dell also said Precision was returning for demanding professional workloads and that Dell Pro Max would be retired as new products launch. The company’s official post put it simply: “Dell XPS is back.” Dell’s January 2026 update describes the revised plan.

The update followed positive feedback as well as requests for greater clarity, according to Dell. It changes the current context of the 2025 announcement: XPS was not permanently retired, and Precision reappeared for professional work. Dell’s post is an official U.S. company announcement, so product naming and availability may vary by market.

How Dell describes its PC brands now

Dell’s 2026 post organizes the portfolio around Dell for personal use and Dell Pro for work, with Alienware remaining focused on gaming. Within that arrangement, XPS is the premium consumer laptop brand and Precision is back for demanding professional workloads. Dell also says it is returning to numbered series—3, 5, 7 and 9—for Dell Pro products.

Brand or family Dell’s stated role in its 2026 announcement
Dell Personal-use PCs
XPS Premium consumer laptops
Dell Pro Work PCs
Precision Demanding professional workloads
Alienware Gaming
Dell Pro Max Dell says the name will be retired as new products launch

Dell’s post describes the direction of the portfolio; it should not be read as proof that every prior label disappeared immediately from all stores, products or regions. For Dell Pro, the company says the series numbers relate to progressively thinner and lighter devices with longer battery life; Dell describes Dell Pro Precision numbers as indicating higher performance. Those are Dell’s descriptions, not independent product comparisons.
