Credible alternatives to Dell PowerStore include Everpure FlashArray, NetApp AFF, HPE Alletra, IBM FlashSystem, Hitachi Vantara VSP, and Huawei OceanStor Dorado. They are candidates for evaluation, not interchangeable replacements: the right choice depends on workload, protocols, capacity, resilience, scale, support, and the exact system configuration. No neutral, matched comparison establishes a universal winner or exact model-to-model equivalents.

Which enterprise storage platforms should you shortlist?

Gartner’s 2026 public abstract defines enterprise storage platforms as providing file, block, and object data services for structured and unstructured workloads, and names Dell, Everpure, Hitachi Vantara, HPE, Huawei, IBM, IEIT Systems, and NetApp in the market. Its vendor list is market context, not a performance ranking. Gartner Peer Insights separately lists FlashArray, NetApp AFF A-Series, OceanStor Dorado, and HPE Alletra dHCI among PowerStore alternatives. That list can help identify candidates, but user-submitted reviews and listings do not prove technical equivalence.

The table distinguishes portfolio positioning from questions to resolve with current product documentation and a workload-specific proposal. Vendor descriptions and guarantees are vendor claims, not independent comparative results.

Platform Published positioning and evidence What to validate
Everpure FlashArray Appears among the PowerStore alternatives listed by Gartner Peer Insights. Everpure’s comparison brief advocates FlashArray, but it is vendor-authored and dated September 2023. Confirm the current model, required protocols, usable capacity, replication and clustering design, licensing, support terms, and benchmark conditions. Treat the 2023 comparison as vendor material, not a current independent verdict.
NetApp AFF A-Series and C-Series NetApp positions A-Series for high performance and C-Series for capacity optimization; both run ONTAP, and NetApp describes the family as supporting multiple protocols and mixed workloads. Choose the series against workload and capacity priorities, then validate protocols, recovery design, software scope, and performance under your I/O profile.
HPE Alletra HPE Alletra dHCI appears on Gartner Peer Insights’ alternatives list. That listing alone does not establish that a particular Alletra offer is equivalent to a standalone storage array. Clarify which current Alletra family and architecture is proposed, whether it meets the need for an array or a disaggregated HCI solution, and what hardware and support are included.
IBM FlashSystem IBM positions FlashSystem 5600 for mixed workloads and smaller OLTP databases, 7600 for larger mixed and OLTP workloads, and 9600 for consolidated mixed and critical OLTP workloads. Match model and enclosure to the workload. Confirm host protocols, expansion, data services, licensing, and performance under the buyer’s I/O profile.
Hitachi Vantara VSP One / VSP Hitachi describes VSP One as spanning block, file, object, and mainframe storage. Its comparison material includes VSP E1090 alongside PowerStore 9200, FlashArray, IBM FlashSystem, and HPE Primera; those are published-spec comparisons, not independently matched tests. Distinguish current VSP One models from older comparison entries, and verify supported functions and test conditions in current datasheets.
Huawei OceanStor Dorado OceanStor Dorado appears in Gartner Peer Insights’ PowerStore alternatives list. A user-submitted review describes SAN/NAS use, but that account is not independent product testing. Alongside technical fit, check procurement eligibility, regulatory constraints, support coverage, and availability in the buyer’s region.

Other names on the alternatives list

Gartner Peer Insights also lists Infinidat InfiniBox, NetApp FAS, Synology DS/FS/HD/RS/SA families, and TrueNAS Enterprise. Their inclusion makes them candidates to screen, not automatic substitutes for a high-end all-flash primary array. Establish the intended role, scale, data services, and support requirements before comparing them with PowerStore.

Define the workload before comparing products

Start by documenting what the system must store and serve. A platform that fits transactional databases may not be the right choice for large file shares, object data, backup, or a mixed consolidation project. Record both present needs and expected growth so vendors price and configure the same job.

  • Workloads: Identify transaction databases, virtual machines, VDI, containers, file shares, object/S3, backup, or mixed workloads, and estimate their relative importance.
  • Protocols: Specify required host and data-access protocols. Depending on the environment, these may include FC, NVMe/FC, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, SMB, or object access. Confirm support for the exact proposed model and software edition.
  • Capacity: State current and forecast usable capacity, retention, growth, and any space reserved for snapshots or recovery copies. Keep raw capacity separate from usable capacity.
  • Performance: Set latency objectives and characterize I/O size, read/write mix, concurrency, queue depth, and peak periods. Include the effect of snapshots and other data services.
  • Resilience and recovery: Define required replication, failover, recovery time and recovery point objectives, and whether recovery must work across sites or isolated environments.
  • Operations and support: Specify administration needs, support coverage and response expectations, maintenance windows, staff skills, and the desired upgrade and expansion path.

Normalize performance and capacity claims

Published maximums and efficiency guarantees are not directly comparable unless the systems are evaluated under the same workload and assumptions. Ask each bidder to disclose its test method and configuration, including workload tuning and any data-reduction assumptions.

  • Optimized for NAS: AgileArray with dual-plane balancing, time-limited error recovery (TLER), and rotational vibration (RV) sensors to deliver top RAID performance in multi-bay environments

Compare performance under one test profile

Use the buyer’s block size, read/write ratio, queue depth, concurrency, latency target, host connectivity, and data services. A peak IOPS or throughput figure without those conditions does not show how an array will perform for the buyer’s application. Require a reproducible method and make vendor tuning visible in the results.

Separate raw, usable, and effective capacity

Ask for raw capacity and usable capacity as separate figures, with the proposed protection and reserve overheads stated. Treat effective capacity as an estimate tied to the buyer’s dataset and assumed reduction ratio, not as a universal outcome. Compare data-reduction guarantees only after checking eligible products, contract terms, and how the guarantee applies.

Keep vendor-published figures in context

  • NetApp’s current AFF A-Series product page, accessed in 2026, presents up to 40 million IOPS, up to 1 TB/s throughput, and 99.9999% availability as product-family claims. These are not matched benchmark results against PowerStore.
  • IBM’s current FlashSystem product page, accessed in 2026, lists up to 2.4 PBe effective maximum capacity within one 1U enclosure for FlashSystem 5600. IBM gives different values for other models and separately displays grid-level capacity, so enclosure and grid figures should not be conflated.
  • Dell’s current product page cites a 6:1 average data-reduction rate guarantee for PowerStore Gen 3 under terms cited in May 2026; Dell notes actual application rates vary. This is Dell’s guarantee, not a normalized competitor comparison.
  • Hitachi’s current VSP One page presents a 100% Data Availability Guarantee and a 4:1 Data Reduction Guarantee. These are Hitachi guarantee statements; check terms and qualifying products.

Evaluate resilience, lifecycle, and total cost

Performance and capacity are only part of an enterprise storage decision. Compare how each proposed configuration protects data, handles failure, grows, and fits the operating model. A feature name alone does not establish the recovery behavior you need.

  • Data protection: Validate synchronous and asynchronous replication, snapshots and immutability, metro or stretched-cluster design where required, and recovery behavior after a failure.
  • Cyber recovery: Ask how isolated recovery is configured, what ransomware detection is included, and how often recovery is tested. Confirm dependencies on licensing, other systems, or operational procedures.
  • Lifecycle: Document controller upgrades, expansion limits, hardware lifecycle, migration path, and whether updates are disruptive or non-disruptive for the proposed configuration.
  • Operations: Evaluate administration workflows, analytics and automation, staff training, support response, and maintenance requirements.
  • Economics: Request like-for-like quotes that identify software licensing, support, migration labor, power, rack space, and multi-year operating assumptions. Public material reviewed here does not establish a neutral current TCO ranking or regional street price.

  2. Require a configuration-specific proposal: Ask for hardware, usable capacity, protection overhead, software edition, licensing, support scope, and expansion path.
  3. Set comparison conditions: Specify the benchmark profile and require disclosure of host connectivity, tuning, data services, reduction assumptions, and test method.
  4. Test recovery and operations: Request demonstrated failover and recovery procedures, recovery objectives, upgrade steps, and the roles or dependencies needed to execute them.
  5. Compare full costs: Obtain current region-specific quotes and itemize support, software, migration, energy, rack requirements, and recurring charges over the same period.
  6. Resolve exceptions: Require bidders to identify unsupported requirements, assumptions, and product or regional availability limits before scoring the proposals.

Gartner Peer Insights can help expand the candidate list, but its user-generated ratings and testimonials are not controlled tests. Vendor product pages and competitive comparisons are useful for confirming each vendor’s own portfolio and claims; they do not substitute for validating the proposed system against the same workload and contract terms.
