If your Dell keyboard is not working in Windows, first identify whether the problem affects the built-in laptop keyboard, an external keyboard, or both. Check the connection and batteries, restart with unnecessary accessories disconnected, then test Windows settings and drivers. If the keyboard also fails Dell’s pre-boot diagnostics, a hardware problem becomes more likely.

Start by identifying the keyboard and symptom

Note whether the keyboard is built into your Dell laptop or connects by USB cable, wireless USB receiver, or Bluetooth. Also note whether no keys work, only certain keys fail, characters are wrong, input is intermittent, or the number pad or function keys behave unexpectedly.

  • If an external keyboard works but the built-in one does not, focus on the laptop keyboard, its settings, and model-specific drivers.
  • If both built-in and external keyboards fail in Windows, check Windows settings and software before concluding that the laptop keyboard is defective.
  • If the on-screen keyboard works, use it to enter text while troubleshooting. In Windows, open it from Settings or search for “On-Screen Keyboard.”

Inspect the keys for visible damage or debris. Avoid forcing a stuck key or taking the laptop apart before checking its warranty and model-specific repair guidance.

Check the keyboard connection

Wired USB keyboard

  1. Unplug and reconnect the keyboard.
  2. Connect it directly to another USB port on the computer, bypassing any hub or dock.
  3. Check the cable and, if using a powered hub, confirm that the hub has power.
  4. If possible, test the keyboard on another PC. Microsoft recommends this when a device appears not to work at all; if it fails there too, the keyboard itself may be at fault, although some devices need a driver to function. See Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting steps.

Wireless USB keyboard

  1. Charge the keyboard or replace its batteries.
  2. Unplug the wireless USB receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
  3. Try another USB port and connect the receiver directly rather than through a hub.
  4. Follow the keyboard maker’s reset or reconnection instructions if the keyboard still does not respond.

Bluetooth keyboard

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is on, the keyboard is charged, in pairing mode, and within range.
  2. If Windows lists the keyboard but it will not connect, remove it from Bluetooth devices and pair it again.
  3. On Windows 11, start with the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 10 and 11 are in Troubleshoot Bluetooth not connecting in Windows.

Check Windows settings that can block or change input

Turn off Filter Keys

Filter Keys can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes, making a working keyboard seem unresponsive. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off Filter Keys. On some systems, holding the right Shift key for eight seconds can enable it; you can turn off that shortcut in Filter Keys options.

This is especially worth checking if pressing keys produces clicks through the speakers, both the built-in and external keyboards seem affected, and the on-screen keyboard still works. Dell documents that symptom pattern in its keyboard troubleshooting guidance. Dell also describes a similar Filter Keys issue for the Dell 16 DC16255 and DC16256; that model-specific report is not proof that Filter Keys explains every keyboard failure.

Check the layout and number pad

If keys type unexpected characters rather than nothing, check the active keyboard layout and language in Windows before assuming the keyboard has failed. If only the numeric keypad behaves incorrectly, check Num Lock; its operation can vary by laptop model.

Disconnect accessories and restart

Disconnect unnecessary peripherals and docking stations, then restart Windows and test the built-in keyboard again. This removes accessories from the troubleshooting path and can help reveal whether the issue is tied to a connected device. Dell includes accessory removal and restarting among its laptop keyboard troubleshooting steps.

Update or reinstall relevant drivers

  1. Run Windows Update and check for available driver updates. Windows Update may not offer a driver for every input device.
  2. For a Dell laptop, visit Dell Support and search by service tag or model for applicable drivers and BIOS updates. Dell SupportAssist can scan for available driver and firmware updates.
  3. For a Bluetooth keyboard connection problem, update the Bluetooth adapter driver and restart Windows. If the issue began after a driver or Windows update, a Bluetooth driver rollback may be available; follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

Use Windows or Dell’s official support routes rather than a generic third-party driver utility. Driver and BIOS choices depend on the Dell model.

Run Dell keyboard diagnostics

Dell recommends testing the keyboard with SupportAssist or its available online or integrated diagnostics. A keyboard detected by a pre-boot test is being recognized below Windows, so Windows or installed software is a more likely place to investigate than if the keyboard is not detected there. A pre-boot test cannot by itself identify every possible fault.

  1. Open Dell SupportAssist and run the keyboard test, or use the diagnostic option available for your model.
  2. If an error appears, record both the error and validation code.
  3. Contact Dell Support with those details and check warranty status if the test indicates a hardware fault.

For Dell’s model-specific support and keyboard guidance, see Laptop Keyboard Isn’t Working and Keyboard Troubleshooting and Usage: The Definitive Guide. A replacement laptop keyboard depends on the exact model; do not choose a part without confirming compatibility.

What Windows version you use can affect support

The troubleshooting steps above apply to Windows 10 and 11, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it.
