A network interface card (NIC) is the hardware interface that lets a computer or server send and receive traffic on a network. NIST defines it as “A circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network.” In current documentation, NIC can also mean an integrated network controller or another network adapter, so it does not always refer to a removable card.

In a data center, a NIC is part of a host-to-switch system. Its host-bus connection, network protocol, ports, media, firmware, offloads, power and cooling all affect whether it will work as intended.

What is a network interface card (NIC)?

The NIST glossary definition, attributed to NIST SP 800-82 Rev. 2, describes a NIC as “A circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network.” The wording captures the basic job: provide the host-side interface for network connectivity.

Terms such as network interface controller, network adapter and LAN adapter are often used in the same conversation. A NIC may be soldered onto a motherboard, built into a system-on-chip, installed as a PCIe add-in adapter or supplied in a server-specific module. Wireless implementations use a radio; data-center NIC discussions usually concern wired server adapters.

What is a NIC used for?

A NIC transmits and receives network frames or packets between a host and a connected network. The adapter, its driver and its firmware coordinate link setup, packet movement and functions exposed to the operating system. Depending on the model, hardware may also perform tasks such as checksum or segmentation offload, virtualization functions including SR-IOV, or RDMA/RoCE processing. These capabilities are model- and configuration-dependent, not universal NIC features.

For example, NVIDIA documents RDMA/RoCE operation for its ConnectX-4 family, while Broadcom documentation for particular adapters lists SR-IOV, RoCE and packet-processing/offload functions. Those product documents describe specific implementations rather than a definition of every NIC.

How does a network interface card work?

  1. Host connection: The controller connects to the server through an integrated interface, PCI Express or a server module such as OCP Spec 3.0.
  2. Driver and firmware: The operating system driver configures the device and exposes its queues, ports and supported features.
  3. Link negotiation: The port and its switch peer establish a compatible speed, encoding and link mode, sometimes including autonegotiation and forward-error-correction settings.
  4. Media conversion: The network-facing port uses the supported copper cable, direct-attach cable or pluggable transceiver to carry electrical or optical signals.
  5. Traffic processing: The NIC moves packets to and from host memory and may offload selected processing or virtualization tasks.

A link only operates at a useful end-to-end rate when the NIC, peer port, cable or optic, host bus and workload all support it.

PCIe stand-up adapters

A PCIe adapter is a replaceable card installed in a compatible slot. NVIDIA’s ConnectX-4 documentation describes PCIe Gen 3 cards with x8 or x16 edge connectors and QSFP28 options: ConnectX-4 Ethernet Adapter Cards User Manual. A server must provide the required PCIe generation, lane width, slot location, bracket clearance, power and airflow.

OCP modules

OCP Spec 3.0 modules use a server-oriented form factor rather than a conventional bracketed PCIe card. The Open Compute Project NIC project defines hardware and firmware interface specifications intended to support interoperable, disaggregated designs. OCP is an ecosystem and specification family, not a synonym for every NIC.

Host-side interface and network-side port are different

The connector inside the server and the connector facing the switch solve different problems. A card can use PCIe internally while exposing SFP28, QSFP28 or another pluggable port externally. NVIDIA’s ConnectX-7 manual covers both PCIe stand-up and OCP Spec 3.0 variants: ConnectX-7 Adapter Cards User Manual.

On the network side, the port determines which transceivers or cables are possible. A specific Broadcom example, the BCM957414A4140C, is a 40/50 Gb/s, single-port PCIe 3.0 x8 Ethernet adapter with QSFP28/QSFP+ optical-transceiver and copper direct-attach options, as described in the Broadcom specification sheet. That is a model-specific example, not a rule that all QSFP ports support every speed or medium.

TP-Link 10GB PCIe Network Card (TX401)-PCIe to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
  • 10 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the latest 10GBase-T Technology, TX401 delivers extreme speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is 10× faster than typical Gigabit adapters, guaranteeing smooth data transmissions for both internet access and local data transmissions[1]
  • Versatile Compatibility: With extreme speed and ultra-low latency, 10GBase-T is backwards compatible with multiple data rates (10 Gbps, 5 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps), automatically negotiating between higher and lower speed connections
  • QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
  • Free CAT6A Ethernet Cable: To maximize TX401's performance, a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet Cable is included—rated for up to 10 Gbps while a regular cable is only rated for 1 Gbps
  • Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases

Before ordering, match both endpoints: NIC port, switch port, supported optic or cable, electrical or optical medium, reach, coding and link mode. NVIDIA’s Data Center Layer 1 Cheat Sheet shows why an SFP or QSFP label alone does not identify a complete, compatible link.

Protocols: Ethernet, InfiniBand and specialized categories

Ethernet and InfiniBand are different network protocols. Some NVIDIA ConnectX-7 products support both, but the selected protocol, firmware mode and configuration must agree with the switch and the rest of the network. An Ethernet NIC cannot be assumed to speak InfiniBand.

SmartNIC, SuperNIC and DPU are product-category or vendor terms with overlapping boundaries. Evaluate the documented function—such as programmable packet processing, infrastructure isolation, virtualization acceleration or storage and security offload—instead of treating any label as an exact synonym for a basic NIC.

What do NIC speed ratings mean?

Ratings such as 1, 10, 25, 50, 100 or 400 Gb/s describe supported link capabilities for a particular model and mode. They are not guarantees of application throughput. The negotiated rate can be limited by the switch, peer device, transceiver or cable, host bus, protocol settings and workload.

Examples illustrate the scope of these figures:

  • NVIDIA’s ConnectX-4 manual lists adapter options supporting 1/10/25/40/50GbE; those rates apply to the documented models, not to all NICs.
  • The Broadcom BCM957414A4140C brief specifies 40/50 Gb/s on a single PCIe 3.0 x8 port.
  • NVIDIA’s layer-one guide maps 1/10/25/40/50/100GbE NRZ and 200/400/800GbE PAM4 configurations for particular lane and transceiver combinations.
  • AMD’s AI NIC Pollara 400 Adapter Operations and Troubleshooting User Guide, revision 1.8 released September 8, 2026, documents a 400 Gbps Ethernet adapter.

These are vendor-published specifications, not independent benchmarks or market-wide statistics. PCIe generation and lane width are host-bus characteristics; they should not be confused with the port’s advertised Ethernet rate.

NIC selection checklist for a data center

Decision area What to verify
Host support PCIe generation, lane and slot availability, OCP form factor, bracket, height and physical clearance.
Power and cooling Slot power, auxiliary power if required, server thermal design, airflow direction and allowable operating temperature. NVIDIA’s ConnectX-7 manual explicitly cautions that required slot power and airflow must be provided.
Protocol and software Ethernet, InfiniBand or a documented dual-protocol mode; operating-system driver, firmware matrix and support lifecycle.
Ports and link mode Port count, required speed, switch compatibility, autonegotiation and FEC requirements, and whether the design needs RDMA/RoCE or another offload.
Media RJ45 copper, supported SFP/QSFP transceiver or direct-attach cable; exact form factor, medium, reach and compatibility at both ends.
Operations Virtualization features such as SR-IOV, storage or management traffic separation, firmware-management method and vendor support horizon.

How to compare two NICs

There is no universal “best NIC.” Compare the options against the workload and server:

  • Throughput and link mode: Confirm the required negotiated rate and encoding rather than comparing headline numbers alone.
  • Port layout: Check the number, connector type and intended use of each port.
  • Host compatibility: Validate slot or OCP support, lane width, bracket, power and airflow.
  • Media cost and availability: Price the supported optics or cables and confirm reach and coding.
  • Protocol and offloads: Verify RDMA/RoCE, SR-IOV or other features on the exact model and software stack.
  • Lifecycle: Check current drivers, firmware, operating-system support and replacement availability.

A consumer 2.5GbE card, a 100GbE server adapter, an InfiniBand host-channel adapter and a DPU address different jobs; substituting one for another requires more than matching a speed label.

Does every NIC need a PCIe slot?

No. A NIC may be integrated into the motherboard or use an OCP or other platform-specific form factor. PCIe stand-up cards are only one server implementation.

Does a faster NIC make the network faster?

Only when the switch, peer, cabling or optics, host bus and workload can support the faster mode. An incompatible or slower element limits the working link.

What is the difference between a NIC, SmartNIC and DPU?

The boundaries vary by vendor. Use the product’s documented offload, programmability, isolation and data-processing functions to determine what it provides instead of relying on the category name alone.

The Bottom Line

A NIC is the host’s network interface, whether integrated or installed as an adapter. For a data-center deployment, select it as part of the complete server-to-switch path: verify host form factor and power, protocol, ports and speed, media, software support, offloads, and cooling before purchase.
