In mobile telecommunications, it refers to a 3GPP-developed mobile broadband system built around the E-UTRA radio interface and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). LTE is a standards name—not a promise about how long a service will last.
What does LTE mean?
LTE is short for Long Term Evolution, according to the ITU terminology database. The phrase names a mobile telecommunications standard; its words do not describe a consumer feature or guarantee that a network will remain available for a particular length of time.
What parts of a mobile network does LTE refer to?
LTE is shorthand for a system enabled by E-UTRA and EPC, as described by 3GPP. The terms refer to different parts of the system:
- E-UTRA is the evolved radio interface—the air-interface technology used for communication between a device and the network.
- E-UTRAN is the corresponding radio access network.
- EPC is the Evolved Packet Core, the system’s core network.
ITU’s Recommendation ITU-R M.2012-7 (February 2026) says that “the term E-UTRA (Evolved-UTRA) is also used to indicate the LTE radio interface.” This distinction helps: E-UTRA names the radio interface, while LTE can refer more broadly to the mobile broadband system.

How is LTE different from LTE-Advanced?
LTE-Advanced is a later development of LTE, based on 3GPP Release 10 and later releases; it is not a different expansion of the letters LTE. ITU’s terminology in Recommendation ITU-R M.2012-7 (February 2026) also identifies LTE Release 13 and later as LTE-Advanced Pro.
These labels mark developments within the LTE family. They should not be treated as synonyms for the original LTE term or as interchangeable names for a particular network layer.

- 4G LTE CAT4 ROUTER - Providing high speed internet without fixed contract, up to 150 Mbps download speed and 50 Mbps uplink speed; Complete frequency bands for national coverage (B2/B4/B5/B12/B13/B14/B66/B71). It is great for any temporary or permanent sites that require highly reliable internet, such as remote sites, RVs, Vehicles, boats, solar powered CCTV cameras, vending machines, M2M, etc.
- ENHANCED SIGNAL in REMOTE LOCATION - Unlike regular routers that support a few frequency bands only, this router supports extended frequency bands like B66 and B71, offering great signal coverage even in rural areas. It also equips with 3 high performance antennas with magnetic base.
- DUAL SIM CARD SLOTS - Backup between two cellular networks, works with all 3 cellular carriers, i.e. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile networks. Confirmed compatibility with Verizon SIM cards since JULY, 2024 - APN vzwinternet (SIM cards and data plans purchased separately).
- Wi-Fi - IEEE 802.11b/g/n, both AP and client mode; It provides WiFi hotspot from cellular and wired network.
- DTU for IoT - Provide data transmission for a variety of RS485 devices (like IoT sensors, PLC machines, Cashier registers, smart meters, etc) and extra Diginal Input and Digital Output for remote control.
Is LTE the same as 4G or 5G?
LTE and 5G are not interchangeable terms. ITU designated LTE-Advanced as an IMT-Advanced technology after evaluation in 2012; that designation specifically names LTE-Advanced, not every LTE release individually. See the ITU announcement of January 18, 2012.
The relationship with 5G standards is also specific. ITU Recommendation ITU-R M.2150-3 (February 2026) includes E-UTRA/LTE as one component radio-interface technology in IMT-2020, alongside NR. The LTE component identified there is based on LTE Releases 15 and 16. This standards relationship does not make LTE and 5G synonymous: the recommendation names LTE and NR as separate component technologies.
