They are network protocols or storage services; an SSD is physical storage installed in your computer. A PC can use both: local storage for its operating system, applications, working data, and cached or pinned content, plus a decentralized network for distributing or storing selected files remotely.
Why IPFS, Filecoin, Arweave, and SSDs are not equivalent options
The comparison mixes two different layers. SATA and NVMe describe ways compatible storage devices connect to and communicate with a computer; an SSD is the physical device holding data. IPFS, Filecoin, and Arweave describe network-based ways to address, distribute, or store data. A decentralized network does not go into an M.2 slot, and NVMe is not a requirement for using these networks.
The practical question is not simply which is “faster” or “better.” It is whether you need data directly available on your PC, content addressed and shared over a peer-to-peer network, storage arranged through a provider deal, or an archival publishing network. One system may complement another, but their access and persistence models differ.
How the storage options compare
| Option | What it does | How persistence and access work | Role in a PC build |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPFS | Uses content addressing, routing, and peer-to-peer transfer to find and move content. A content identifier (CID) identifies content; it is not itself a promise that a copy will remain available. IPFS documentation | A node can cache content and later garbage-collect it. Pinning protects selected content from garbage collection on that node. A remote pin adds a service operator as another dependency. IPFS persistence documentation | Local disk can hold node data, cache, or pins. |
| Filecoin | A separate decentralized storage network focused on agreed storage deals, rather than a type of IPFS drive. IPFS describes the distinction as: “IPFS addresses and moves content, while Filecoin is an incentive layer to persist data.” IPFS FAQ | A client and provider agree on data amount, duration, and cost. Retrieving stored data is a separate operation and may be slower than retrieving from an IPFS pinning service. Filecoin documentation and IPFS persistence documentation | Can complement local storage with a remote copy, but does not behave like a continuously mounted local volume. |
| Arweave | A network whose ecosystem documentation describes it as permanent storage, with separate upload and access tooling. ar.io documentation | Publishing and accessing content use network tools and gateway infrastructure. “Permanent” describes the network’s design and positioning, not an unconditional physical guarantee or a quantified independent durability finding. | A remote publishing or archival option, not local working storage. |
| SATA or NVMe SSD | A physical nonvolatile storage device. SATA and NVMe are different connection/protocol choices; the motherboard and drive must be compatible. | Data is available locally while the drive and system work. The drive alone does not provide an off-site copy or automatic redundancy. | Suitable for the OS, applications, games, working files, and local network data. |
Can IPFS replace an SSD?
No. IPFS can help a computer find and transfer content by its CID, but discovery is distinct from persistent availability. As the IPFS persistence documentation puts it, “IPFS guarantees that any content on the network is discoverable, it doesn’t guarantee that any content is persistently available.” If a node needs to retain particular data, its operator needs a persistence plan: for example, pinning content locally, arranging multiple pins, or using a managed pinning service.

A locally pinned CID can be available offline from that node, but only if the node’s local copy remains intact and accessible. A pin on a third-party service depends on that provider continuing to operate and retain the data; the IPFS documentation does not guarantee that a provider will remain in business. For important content, account for recovery and independent copies rather than treating the CID as a backup.
Is Filecoin like a hard drive?
Not in the everyday PC sense. A Filecoin storage deal is an agreement involving how much data is stored, for how long, and at what cost. It does not turn the provider’s capacity into a drive letter or make remote data behave like local files. When planning a workflow, consider how retrieval is initiated, how long it may take, and how a usable copy is restored to the PC. Official IPFS documentation cautions that retrieval from Filecoin is not always as fast as from an IPFS pinning service.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
That makes Filecoin a possible component of a remote-storage plan, not a substitute for local space needed by an application or active project. Deal terms, retrieval path, redundancy, provider continuity, and migration options matter alongside the storage commitment.
What does “permanent” mean for Arweave?
Arweave’s ecosystem documentation presents it as permanent storage, and the ar.io documentation covers upload and access tooling. That is a different model from owning a local SSD: publishing and later accessing data depend on the network and its gateways rather than a drive attached to your PC.

- SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).

The available documentation here does not quantify durability guarantees or independently assess long-term protocol, economic, implementation, or gateway risks. Treat “permanent” as the network’s design goal and description, not a blanket guarantee that every copy, access route, or service will work forever. It is most relevant to public publishing or archival use, not as a replacement for local working files.
Should a decentralized storage node use NVMe?
Use an internal SSD if you need local capacity for a node, cache, pinned content, games, or ordinary files; the right capacity and connection depend on your build and workload. The Samsung internal SSD category is one example of the product category, not evidence for a particular model recommendation. The reviewed protocol material does not establish a protocol-specific advantage for NVMe over another compatible SSD.

Choose the drive based on motherboard compatibility, form factor, capacity, price, warranty, endurance, and evidence relevant to your actual workload. Do not buy NVMe solely because a project uses IPFS, Filecoin, or Arweave. The network protocols do not require it.
How to plan a PC that uses local and decentralized storage
- Keep active work local. Put the operating system, applications, games, and files that need direct low-latency access on compatible local storage.
- Identify what needs to persist. For IPFS content, decide which node or service will pin it and how many independent copies you need. For Filecoin, review deal duration and cost as well as the retrieval process. For Arweave, understand the upload and access path before relying on it for an archive.
- Plan for recovery. Decide how a remote copy will be retrieved to the PC, where it will be stored, and what happens if a service, provider, gateway, or local drive becomes unavailable.
- Protect sensitive data before publishing. IPFS is a public network with globally consistent CIDs and publicly advertised availability. Do not treat publishing to it as a confidentiality feature; sensitive data needs appropriate encryption and key management before publication.
Can you compare performance or total cost directly?
There is no directly comparable current benchmark here for consumer SSD/NVMe hardware against IPFS, Filecoin, or Arweave. Network routing, provider, retrieval path, cache state, file size, client software, and the local system all affect observed performance, so a speed claim without a defined test would be misleading.

Costs also need to be compared on equivalent terms. A drive purchase gives local capacity, while a network or service may involve different storage duration, retrieval, redundancy, or ongoing service costs. No current matched price or capacity comparison is established here. Before committing, compare dated pricing, retention terms, access and retrieval mechanisms, redundancy, provider continuity, export or migration options, and privacy requirements.
