Debian 12 “Bookworm” brought a new firmware archive component, refreshed desktop environments and core software, and installation improvements. It was released in 2023, so its version numbers below describe Bookworm at launch—not the packages currently available. As of September 30, 2026, Bookworm’s regular support has ended; its Long Term Support (LTS) period is scheduled to run through June 30, 2028, with some packages excluded.

What changed most in Debian 12?

Bookworm’s biggest user-facing changes were a clearer home for non-free firmware, newer software across the system, and updated desktop choices. Debian also improved parts of the installer and restored Secure Boot support on UEFI-capable ARM64 hardware. These are release-era changes: Bookworm’s initial package versions should not be mistaken for current versions after years of updates.

Firmware now has its own archive component

Debian created the non-free-firmware archive area and moved most firmware packages that had previously been in non-free into it. The separation allowed Debian to produce official installation images containing packages from main and non-free-firmware without also including contrib or non-free. Debian’s release announcement says the installer may enable the firmware component when needed; that does not mean every computer requires proprietary firmware or every installation enables it. See Debian’s Bookworm release notes on firmware and the release announcement.

If you upgrade from Bullseye and already use non-free firmware, review your APT sources list and the upgrade instructions. The archive change is relevant to repository configuration, not a reason to assume that all hardware needs a firmware change.

Desktop environments received new release baselines

Debian continued to offer several desktop environments rather than making one mandatory. The versions below are those listed for Bookworm at release; Debian’s announcement does not establish performance rankings among them.

Desktop Bookworm release version
GNOME 43
KDE Plasma 5.27
LXDE 11
LXQt 1.2.0
MATE 1.26
Xfce 4.18

For someone choosing a desktop, the practical point is that Bookworm offered distinct interfaces and workflows while updating their starting versions. The release information alone is not a basis for claiming one desktop is faster or lighter than another.

The software baseline moved forward from Bullseye

Bookworm included broad package updates. Debian’s 2023 release announcement counted over 11,089 new packages, 64,419 packages in total, 43,254 updated packages, and over 6,296 packages removed as obsolete. Those are counts for the release, not today’s archive totals.

Software Bullseye version cited by Debian Bookworm version at release
Linux kernel image 5.10 series 6.1 series
Python 3 3.9.2 3.11.2
PostgreSQL 13 15
OpenSSH 8.4p1 9.2p1
OpenSSL 1.1.1n 3.0.8

Other notable Bookworm release versions included GCC 12.2, LibreOffice 7.4, Apache 2.4.57, MariaDB 10.11, PHP 8.2, OpenJDK 17, systemd 252, and Vim 9.0. These are useful reference points for understanding the 2023 upgrade, not claims about the versions now installed on a maintained system. Debian’s Bookworm release notes document changes and package-version comparisons in more detail.

Installer improvements and ARM64 Secure Boot

Debian described improved hardware support and several installer fixes, including changes related to graphical support on UTM, GRUB font loading, installation completion delays, and detection of BIOS-bootable systems. The release also reintroduced Secure Boot support on UEFI-capable ARM64 hardware. That statement is specific to UEFI-capable ARM64 systems; it should not be generalized to every ARM device.

Time synchronization changed for administrators

Bookworm replaced the ntp package with ntpsec. The default system clock service became systemd-timesyncd; Debian also supports chrony and openntpd. Administrators who relied on an NTP package or service should account for that change when reviewing system configuration.

Plan an upgrade with Bookworm’s lifecycle in mind

Debian says upgrades from Bullseye are handled by APT automatically for most configurations, but that is not a guarantee that every system can be upgraded without preparation. Before upgrading, follow the architecture-specific release notes and check repository and package compatibility.

  1. Read the Bookworm release notes for preparation and upgrade instructions relevant to your architecture.
  2. Remove Bullseye backports entries before upgrading, as the release notes advise.
  3. Check whether third-party repositories provide Bookworm-compatible packages before relying on them during the upgrade.
  4. Review APT source entries for non-free-firmware if the system uses firmware packages affected by the archive split.

Is Debian 12 still supported?

Yes, but no longer through regular Debian support. Debian’s notice dated July 12, 2026 says regular support ended that day and the LTS team took over security support. Bookworm LTS is scheduled to continue through June 30, 2028, five years after the initial release. Debian notes that some packages are outside LTS coverage and recommends users who can upgrade to Debian 13 do so. The debian-security-support package can help identify installed packages that are not covered. Check Debian’s Bookworm LTS announcement for the current lifecycle notice.
