D&D Beyond’s October Drop, Shadowfell Secrets, was announced on October 1, 2026. It adds four monsters, four maps and updated encounters for Dungeon Masters, plus the Sorrow Knight Fighter subclass, three feats and a Tarokka Life Path for players. Despite its spooky-season timing, D&D Beyond describes the material as steeped in Shadowfell melancholy rather than straightforward horror.
What is D&D Beyond’s October Drop?
Shadowfell Secrets is D&D Beyond’s October 2026 release of digital Dungeon Master tools and player options. The official October 1 announcement frames it as a return to parts of the Shadowfell beyond the Domains of Dread, the setting’s bleak reflection of the Material Plane.
Jay Jani, the author of the announcement, describes the tone directly: “This month’s monsters and maps (and even the character options) aren’t quite horror-themed; they’re instead infused with the Shadowfell’s pervasive melancholy.” The title’s horror-and-spooky association is therefore best read as seasonal atmosphere, not a promise that every addition is designed as conventional horror.

The official announcement supplies these descriptions and challenge ratings; it does not establish broader claims about encounter balance or how the creatures perform in play.
Four maps
Cartographer Jason A. Engle is credited for four settings: cavern corridors surrounding a ritual pit, a burial chamber marked by magic circles, a nighttime forest clearing, and ruins of a keep in the Shadowfell. Together, they provide ready-made locations for scenes ranging from underground ritual activity to an encounter among decayed stronghold walls.

Five updated encounters
Five earlier Drop-in Encounters have been updated to Storied Encounters, with level guidance listed for each:
- Urban Vampire Cadre: levels 4 and 10
- Corrupted Grove: levels 5 and 19
- Demonic Cult Summoning: levels 6 and 17
- Ooze There: levels 6 and 11
- Slippery Slope: levels 2 and 7
D&D Beyond says it will periodically add new Scene Prep text to more encounters from the backlog. The announcement does not give a schedule for those future updates.

What player options are included?
Sorrow Knight Fighter subclass
The Sorrow Knight is the first subclass to appear in a D&D Beyond Drop. Fighters channel past despair through special Despairing Strike Dice, which power attacks called Despairing Strikes. Its level 3 feature lets the character sense a creature’s prevalent emotions; at level 18, the character attunes to the Shadowfell after using Action Surge. Those are headline features rather than a full rules summary: consult the subclass entry for its complete mechanics before building a character around it.

- Shadow Pact establishes a pact with a Shadowfell entity.
- Shadow Trapper inflicts Shadowfell melancholy on trapped foes.
- Shadow Weaver lets a character create, control and manipulate shadows.
The announcement provides these high-level concepts, not enough detail to compare the feats’ mechanical strength.
Tarokka Life Path and character-sheet backdrops
The Tarokka Life Path is a backstory tool: a spread using the digital Tarokka Deck to give a character’s history a foundation. The October Drop includes the Life Path spread only. The digital deck, which supports other spreads, can be purchased separately through the D&D Beyond Marketplace.

D&D Beyond also announced four Shadowfell-themed character-sheet backdrops, with rollout expected the week after the October 1 announcement. That was a stated rollout expectation, not a confirmation of their later availability.
