DC movies do not share one master timeline. The older DCEU and the newer DCU are separate connected universes; Batman and Joker each have their own film series; and many other films stand alone or belong to separate animated continuities. “Standalone” can mean either outside a shared universe or simply easy to understand on its own, so the best viewing order depends on which story you want to follow.

What does “standalone” mean for a DC movie?
It can mean two different things: a film is not part of a larger shared continuity, or it can be watched without needing to know the other entries in its continuity. Those meanings are not interchangeable. A movie may be a self-contained entry in a shared universe, while a film outside that universe may still have a direct sequel.
For example, Superman (2025) is the starting point for the new DCU, but it is also designed as an entry point rather than a chapter that requires the older DCEU. Joker is outside the main DCU, yet it continues in Joker: Folie à Deux. DC Studios co-chairman and CEO Peter Safran put the separation plainly in DC’s 2023 announcement: “And if something isn’t DCU, we’re going to make that very clear.” DC’s announcement of the new DCU slate names projects outside that shared universe, including the Joker films and Matt Reeves’s Batman story.

Which live-action DC movies are connected?
The clearest way to sort live-action films is by continuity, not by character or release date alone. Use one lane at a time: the DCEU is not the new DCU, and a multiverse crossover does not collapse every past Batman or Superman film into one ordinary timeline.

Older DCEU: the earlier connected universe
The older shared film continuity begins with Man of Steel (2013). Its major releases run through Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), with films focused on different heroes and teams along the way. The complete broad film path is:

This is a release-path overview, not a claim that every film demands the same amount of prior viewing. Some installments follow shared characters or events more closely than others. If you want the broadest context for the universe, start at Man of Steel, then watch Batman v Superman and one version of Justice League before choosing which character branches to follow. DC’s live-action Superman guide and its release listings provide additional context for the older films.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) is a different cut/version of the Justice League installment, not an additional story chapter to watch after the 2017 theatrical film. Choose the version you want rather than treating both as consecutive events. The DCEU also is not the continuity of David Corenswet’s Superman in the DCU.
New DCU: the current connected story
The new DCU’s theatrical starting point is Superman (2025), followed in the same continuity by Supergirl (2026). DC’s current release guide also identifies Clayface (2026) as a DCU film. These are part of a new shared universe, not continuations of the DCEU plots. For a viewer who wants the new story, start with Superman; you do not need to watch the older films first.
The DCU will have its own Batman: DC announced The Brave and the Bold as the introduction of that version. It is distinct from Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Ben Affleck’s Batman. In particular, The Batman is not a prequel to The Brave and the Bold. The original announcement used earlier project names, including Superman: Legacy and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow; the released/current film titles are Superman and Supergirl. Reeves Batman: a separate connected saga
The Batman (2022) begins its own Batman continuity. It is neither part of the older DCEU nor the main DCU, and it does not belong to the Joker film series. DC’s Batman guide identifies the television series The Penguin as a bridge between the first film and its planned sequel. That connection makes the saga more than a one-off film, but it remains a separate lane from the DCU Batman announced for The Brave and the Bold.
Joker: two films, separate from both Batman sagas
Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) is followed by Joker: Folie à Deux (2024). The pair forms a two-film series outside the DCU. It is not a prequel or spin-off of The Batman, and the presence of Batman-related characters or themes in different films does not establish a shared continuity. DC’s 2023 DCU announcement explicitly places both the Joker project and Reeves’s Batman project outside the main DCU.
Nolan and Burton/Schumacher Batman films
Christopher Nolan’s three-film run is a complete separate story: Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Christian Bale’s Batman is not Affleck’s DCEU Batman, Pattinson’s Batman, or the coming DCU Batman.
The Burton/Schumacher series follows Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), and Batman & Robin (1997). The later films recast Batman, but DC treats them as sequels within the intended film-series path. DC also acknowledges a comic continuation branching from Burton’s films; that does not make the comics or movies part of the DCEU or DCU. DC’s Batman viewing guide maps these separate runs.
Classic Superman: related branches, not one modern continuity
Christopher Reeve’s four Superman films and Supergirl (1984) form a classic screen series. Superman Returns (2006) can be watched on its own or as an alternate continuation after the first two Reeve films. The much earlier Superman and the Mole Men (1951) belongs to another screen continuity. Neither Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel nor Corenswet’s Superman continues those classic plots. Is Blue Beetle part of the DCU or the DCEU?
Blue Beetle (2023) is included among the late releases in the older DCEU watchlist, but its relationship to the transition into the new DCU is less straightforward than the other entries. James Gunn described the film as disconnected from earlier entries and said the character could be part of the DCU. That statement leaves room for the character to continue; it does not establish that every event in the 2023 film is part of the new DCU’s canon.

For viewing purposes, include the film with the older-era releases if you are following that release path. If you are following the new DCU, treat the possible future use of Blue Beetle as a separate question from whether the entire earlier movie has been adopted into its continuity. DC’s interview with Gunn and Peter Safran discusses the transition-era distinction.
Do the Flash and alternate cuts connect every DC movie?
No. The Flash belongs in an older-DCEU viewing path, even though it uses time travel and the multiverse to show other screen versions of DC characters. A crossover is an event within that movie’s story; it does not turn every Batman or Superman series into one continuous timeline.
That distinction also helps with the different Justice League versions. The theatrical 2017 film and the 2021 Snyder cut are alternative versions of the same installment, not sequential chapters. Are animated DC movies connected to the live-action films?
Usually, no: animated DC films have their own continuities, and the animation label does not identify one all-encompassing universe. DC lists several connected animated runs as well as stand-alone stories. Do not assign a film to a universe just because it reuses a character, voice actor, or familiar name.

DC Animated Movie Universe (DCAMU)
The DCAMU begins with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013) and concludes with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020). It is a connected sequence of animated films, distinct from the live-action DCEU and DCU. If you want that animated storyline, start with its designated opening film rather than trying to insert it into a live-action watch order.
Tomorrowverse
The Tomorrowverse starts with Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020) and concludes with the three Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths films (2024). It is another animated continuity, separate from the DCAMU even though both include familiar Justice League characters.
DCAU and other animated groupings
The DCAU includes films such as Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five. DC’s guides also identify a two-film Superman/Batman pairing, Batman Ninja and its sequel, and separate LEGO strands. Those groupings should be followed on their own terms rather than folded into the DCAMU or Tomorrowverse.
Animated movies that stand on their own
Some animated films are not presented as chapters in one of those shared timelines. Examples include All-Star Superman and Superman: Red Son. Their distinct stories are a good option if you want a single animated feature rather than a multi-film commitment. DC’s animated Superman guide separates connected groupings from independent adaptations.
Where should I start if I do not want homework?
Choose the experience you want, then stay inside that continuity. You do not need to watch every DC film to understand a self-contained series or the opening film of a new universe.

Should I use release order or try to make one DC chronology?
Use release order within the continuity you chose. A single in-story chronology across all DC films would have to mix reboots, alternate continuations, separate Batman series, classic Superman branches, and multiverse appearances that do not form one shared timeline. DC’s own movie guides organize the films by character and continuity rather than offering one universal order.
When two titles have a clear series relationship, follow that relationship: the Nolan trilogy in release order, the Joker pair in release order, or the DCAMU from its opening film to its conclusion. For entries that are merely grouped by hero rather than a proven common story, do not infer continuity from casting, shared character names, or the release year alone. DC’s live-action and animated guides provide separate paths for Batman and animated Superman films.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did the new DCU’s Superman movie come out?
DC lists Superman as opening in North America on July 11, 2025. That is the theatrical release date, not a statement about when or where it became available for streaming. DC’s film page has the current title and release information.
When was Supergirl released in North America?
DC’s current film information gives Supergirl a North American release date of June 26, 2026. Release dates can vary by territory, so that date should not be read as a worldwide opening date. DC’s movie index lists the film.
How many projects were in DC’s first announced DCU slate?
The January 2023 announcement described 10 initially interconnected projects: five movies and five television series. That was the size of the initial slate announcement, not a count of every project released or planned by 2026. DC’s original slate article gives that announcement context.
