David Ellison says the combined Paramount and Warner Bros. company will be called Skydance. The choice gives the parent company a new corporate identity; it does not mean Paramount or Warner Bros. will disappear as studio names. Ellison said both would remain visible, though their future operating independence had not been established in the October 2, 2026 report.
Why choose a new name when the company already owns two famous studios?
A parent-company name and a studio name can serve different purposes. Ellison’s stated rationale was that the combined business should have an identity of its own without diminishing the legacies or audience-facing brands of Paramount and Warner Bros.

In a statement reproduced from his post on X, Ellison said the studios had “distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations.” He added that the new identity was meant to let the combined company stand apart while keeping Paramount, Warner Bros. and its other brands “in the spotlight.” That is the announced branding intention, not evidence of how the studios will be managed.
Will Paramount and Warner Bros. keep their names?
According to AJ Dellinger’s October 2, 2026 AOL report, yes: Ellison said the Paramount and Warner Bros. identities would remain visible beneath the Skydance corporate umbrella. The report did not establish how much independence either studio would have, or how decisions about films, television, leadership or distribution would be divided after the deal.

So the headline’s joke that the billionaire “uses none” of the legendary names is a jab at the choice of a new umbrella name—not a literal claim that the two studio brands have been discarded. Skydance is the name announced for the combined company; the status of the legacy labels is a separate question from the parent’s name.
When was the deal expected to close?
Dellinger’s AOL article reported that Paramount’s purchase of Warner Bros. was expected to close on October 6, 2026. As of the article’s publication on October 2, that was a scheduled future date, not a completed transaction. The article therefore does not confirm that closing occurred or establish the final post-close corporate structure.

For context only, a September 21, 2026 Gizmodo report described states involved in an antitrust challenge agreeing to settle and summarized terms reported by The New York Times, including provisions concerning news independence and film distribution. That earlier account is not confirmation of the eventual structure or of a completed sale.

Dellinger’s 2026 AOL article described the Paramount and Warner Bros. studios as having more than 200 years of combined history and put the purchase value at $110 billion. Those are figures as reported by that article; the history figure is its characterization of the studios’ combined legacies, not a separately calculated total presented here.

Ellison also described the combined company as “a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.” That is promotional language from his statement, not an independently verified description of how the company will operate.
