Short answer: Choose a data-center career if you want hands-on work with servers, cabling, power, cooling, and 24/7 operations; choose software development if you prefer building and testing code; choose IT if you want to support users, run networks and systems, or protect them. Software and security occupations generally have higher national median pay, while data-center work is expanding quickly and can offer practical entry routes that do not always require a four-year degree. Compare a specific job, location, shift, and level—not a vague “tech salary”—before deciding.
What each career path actually involves
“Data center,” “software,” and “IT” are not single occupations. They are clusters of jobs with different daily work, preparation, schedules, and pay. A data-center technician, software developer, help-desk specialist, systems administrator, and security analyst may all work in technology while using very different skills.
Data-center careers
Data-center teams keep physical computing infrastructure available. Typical work includes installing and removing servers, inspecting racks, replacing failed components, tracing and labeling structured cabling, checking environmental conditions, responding to incidents, following change-control procedures, documenting work, and coordinating with facilities or network teams. Depending on the site, technicians may also work around electrical distribution, generators, uninterruptible power systems, cooling equipment, fire suppression, and strict safety controls.
Common titles include data-center technician, data-center engineer, infrastructure technician, hardware operations technician, facilities technician, and operations manager. LinkedIn’s data-center skills framework treats data-center operations, architecture, and racking as core skills. Network administration, cabling, and virtualization are adjacent skills that make a technician more versatile.

Software careers
Software developers design, build, test, debug, document, and maintain applications or other programs. The work is primarily code-centered, although developers also analyze requirements, review changes, manage version control, investigate production defects, and collaborate with product, design, security, and operations teams.
Programming language knowledge matters, but employers also expect data structures, algorithms, software design, automated testing, debugging, version-control workflows, and the ability to explain technical decisions. A developer can work in application development, web services, mobile software, embedded systems, data engineering, or other specialties.
IT careers
IT is a broad family of support, infrastructure, administration, and security jobs.
Recommended Free Tools
- Computer support specialists diagnose user and device problems, provide technical help, maintain equipment, and escalate issues that require deeper expertise.
- Network and systems administrators install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot networks, servers, operating systems, accounts, and related services.
- Information security analysts plan and carry out measures to protect systems and networks, monitor for threats, investigate incidents, and improve controls.
Support can be an entry point into administration, security, cloud infrastructure, or software, but advancement normally requires deliberate skill building rather than relying on tenure alone.
How fast is data-center employment growing?
U.S. Census Bureau analysis published in 2025 found that employment in U.S. data centers increased from 306,000 in 2016 to 501,000 in 2023—more than 60% growth. The largest concentrations were in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Georgia. These figures cover employment across the facilities and technical occupations associated with data centers; they are not a single job category or a guarantee of openings in every city.

The expansion reflects more computing, cloud services, storage, and artificial-intelligence workloads. It also creates demand for people who can operate equipment safely and consistently. Uptime Institute’s 2025 survey shows why employers may struggle to fill those roles: 39% of operators identified operations management as a serious skills gap, followed by junior- and mid-level operations at 38% and electrical roles at 35%.
Data Center Knowledge’s 2024 survey of 316 professionals found that 77% reported a salary increase in 2023 and 31% said AI was a critical job skill. That survey is an industry signal, not a national wage estimate; respondents and employers may not represent the entire labor market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPay comparison: use occupation benchmarks, not a generic data-center salary
There is no single national “data-center salary.” Data-center employees may be classified as technicians, engineers, network administrators, facilities specialists, managers, or other occupations. Pay changes with region, employer, clearance or specialty requirements, seniority, overtime, shift differential, and whether the role is technical or facilities-focused.
The following U.S. medians come from Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles and refer to May 2024 wages, reported in 2025. They are benchmarks for the named occupations, not offers for a particular employer.
| Occupation | May 2024 median annual pay | Typical work emphasis | Typical entry education |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software developers | $131,450 | Designing, coding, testing, and maintaining applications or programs | Bachelor’s degree |
| Information security analysts | $124,910 | Protecting systems, monitoring threats, and investigating incidents | Bachelor’s degree |
| Network and computer systems administrators | $96,800 | Installing and maintaining networks, servers, and operating systems | Bachelor’s degree |
| Computer support specialists | $61,550 | Providing technical help and maintaining user systems | Varies; technical preparation and certifications can matter |
Across computer and information technology occupations, the BLS reported a $105,990 median annual wage in May 2024 and projects about 317,700 openings per year from 2024 through 2034. Those openings include both new jobs and replacement needs.

Why the highest median is not automatically the best choice
- A national median hides local cost of living and regional demand.
- Overtime, night work, on-call coverage, bonuses, and shift premiums can materially change infrastructure compensation.
- Entry-level pay is usually below the occupation median, which includes experienced workers.
- A role with a lower starting wage may provide paid training, employer-sponsored certifications, or a clearer route to a higher-paid specialty.
- Compare the complete offer: base pay, overtime rules, benefits, schedule, commute, physical demands, promotion criteria, and training budget.
Job outlook and portability
Software and security
Software development and information security have stronger projected growth than traditional network and systems administration in the cited BLS outlook. Demand is supported by new applications, modernized systems, cloud services, and the need to defend expanding digital infrastructure. Growth still varies by specialty and employer, so a strong portfolio, current tools, and demonstrable problem-solving remain important.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Network and systems administration
BLS projects network and computer systems administrator employment to decline 4% from 2024 to 2034, while still producing replacement openings. Automation, managed services, and cloud platforms change the task mix rather than eliminating every infrastructure job. Administrators who add scripting, cloud, security, monitoring, and automation skills can keep their experience portable.
Data-center operations
Data-center employment grew by more than 60% between 2016 and 2023, and operator surveys continue to report shortages. The opportunity is strongest for people who combine reliable hands-on execution with documentation, incident communication, networking, and an understanding of power and cooling constraints. Experience can lead toward network engineering, cloud infrastructure, facilities engineering, capacity planning, or operations management.
Skills employers look for
Data-center skill set
- Server, storage, and rack installation, removal, and component replacement
- Structured cabling, labeling, fiber and copper handling, and cable tracing
- Basic networking concepts such as addressing, switching, ports, and link status
- Operating-system and virtualization fundamentals
- Incident response, escalation, ticketing, and clear shift handoffs
- Change control, maintenance windows, asset records, and procedural documentation
- Awareness of electrical, mechanical, environmental, and workplace-safety requirements
- Physical stamina for standing, lifting within employer limits, and working in controlled facility conditions
Operations management and electrical capability are notable shortage areas. A candidate who can safely follow procedures and communicate accurately is often more valuable than someone who knows hardware but ignores controls.
Software skill set
- At least one production-relevant programming language and the ability to learn others
- Data structures, algorithms, and software design principles
- Version control, code review, testing, debugging, and release practices
- Working with APIs, databases, operating systems, and development tools appropriate to the role
- Written communication, collaboration, and the ability to break ambiguous requirements into testable work
IT and security skill set
- Diagnosing user, endpoint, account, network, and service problems methodically
- Windows or Linux administration, identity and access concepts, backups, and monitoring
- Networking fundamentals, troubleshooting methodology, and documentation
- Security controls, vulnerability management, logging, incident handling, and risk awareness
- Scripting or automation that reduces repetitive support and administration work
Do you need a degree?
Roles where a bachelor’s degree is typical
BLS profiles list a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry education for software developers, information security analysts, systems analysts, and network and computer systems administrators. “Typical” does not mean every employer requires it, but applicants without a degree generally need stronger evidence of equivalent ability—substantial projects, relevant experience, certifications, internships, or an internal transfer record.

Support, technician, and operations routes
Computer-support requirements vary. Some employers emphasize technical knowledge, customer-service ability, certifications, or other postsecondary preparation instead of a four-year degree. BLS notes that certifications may be vendor-specific or vendor-neutral and that continuing education is often needed.
There is no universal degree requirement established for data-center technicians or operations roles. Employers may value practical hardware work, cabling, safety, electrical or mechanical awareness, documentation, and incident skills. LinkedIn’s data-center talent definitions include certifications, but a certification alone does not replace safe, demonstrable competence.
Practical entry routes for each path
Starting in a data center
- Learn hardware and safety basics. Understand server components, rack units, cable types, grounding concepts, safe lifting, electrostatic-discharge precautions, and why only authorized personnel should work on energized equipment.
- Practice repeatable procedures. Build a home lab or supervised practice environment for installing an operating system, identifying components, labeling cables, recording asset details, and documenting a change.
- Add networking and virtualization. Learn addressing, switching, basic troubleshooting, and how virtual machines use physical resources.
- Target technician, smart-hands, staging, or operations roles. Read the schedule and physical requirements carefully; many facilities require on-site coverage, nights, weekends, or rotating shifts.
- Build toward a specialty. After reliable operations experience, choose networking, cloud infrastructure, facilities/electrical work, capacity, automation, or management.
Starting in software
- Choose a focused development track. For example, web services, mobile, data tooling, or embedded software.
- Master fundamentals before collecting frameworks. Learn programming, data structures, testing, debugging, and version control.
- Publish evidence of working software. A small, documented project with tests and a clear README is more useful than a list of tutorials.
- Practice collaboration. Use issues, pull requests, code review, and concise technical explanations.
- Apply for internships, apprenticeships, junior roles, or adjacent automation work. Keep improving the same portfolio while tailoring it to each job’s stack.
Starting in IT support or administration
- Learn troubleshooting as a process. Reproduce the problem, isolate variables, test one change at a time, document the result, and escalate with useful evidence.
- Build operating-system and networking competence. Practice accounts, permissions, DNS, addressing, logs, backups, and common endpoint failures.
- Consider a relevant certification. Choose training that maps to the jobs in your region; verify the exam’s current objectives and renewal rules.
- Move toward administration, cloud, or security. Add scripting, identity, monitoring, vulnerability management, and incident-response experience.
Work style, schedule, and physical demands
| Path | Typical work setting | Schedule considerations | Physical or interpersonal profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data center | On-site facility, equipment rooms, staging areas, and operations centers | Coverage may include nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, or rotating shifts | Hands-on work, standing, equipment handling, safety procedures, and detailed handoffs |
| Software | Usually computer-based and collaborative; remote or hybrid arrangements vary by employer | Deadlines, releases, and incident response can create irregular periods | Extended computer work, sustained problem-solving, design discussion, and code review |
| IT support/administration | Users, offices, operations centers, or hybrid environments | Support coverage and maintenance windows may include evenings, nights, or weekends | Frequent communication, troubleshooting, documentation, and occasional equipment work |
Network and systems administrators in particular may work evenings, nights, or weekends because maintenance and outages must be handled outside normal business hours. Ask an employer how often after-hours work occurs, how on-call time is compensated, and whether shifts are fixed or rotated.
Which path fits your priorities?
| If you most enjoy… | Best starting direction | What to verify before accepting a role |
|---|---|---|
| Physical equipment, procedures, and visible operational results | Data-center technician or infrastructure operations | Shift pattern, lifting limits, safety training, overtime, and advancement path |
| Building new products and solving abstract problems in code | Software development | Language and stack, mentorship, code-review practice, on-call expectations, and degree screening |
| Helping people solve urgent technical problems | Computer support | Ticket volume, escalation quality, training, schedule, and promotion criteria |
| Networks, servers, automation, and reliability | Systems or network administration | Cloud exposure, scripting expectations, maintenance windows, and on-call rotation |
| Threat detection, controls, and investigation | Information security | Required experience, incident workload, compliance duties, and whether the role is defensive or governance-focused |
A decision checklist before you apply
- Job title and duties: Read the actual responsibilities; “engineer” can mean hardware operations, facilities, software, or customer support.
- Location: Compare the local labor market and living costs. Data-center employment is concentrated in several states, but individual facilities can be far from major cities.
- Education screen: Determine whether a degree is a hard requirement or whether equivalent experience is accepted.
- Schedule: Confirm fixed versus rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call frequency, and maintenance windows.
- Pay structure: Separate base salary from overtime, shift differential, bonus, and temporary incentives.
- Advancement: Ask what skills and performance evidence lead to the next level and how long promotions typically take.
- Training: Check whether the employer pays for certifications, lab time, continuing education, or conference attendance.
- Work conditions: For facilities roles, ask about noise, temperature, protective equipment, lifting, and time spent standing or climbing.
- Portability: Prefer skills that transfer across employers—networking, scripting, documentation, security, virtualization, and incident management.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a job title with an occupation median
A data-center technician’s pay cannot be inferred from the software-developer median. Match the exact occupation, level, region, shift, and total compensation package.
Assuming a certification guarantees employment
Certifications can signal structured learning, but employers still evaluate troubleshooting, safety, communication, and evidence that you can perform the work. Pair study with labs, documented projects, or supervised experience.

Ignoring operations and documentation
Infrastructure failures often become worse when changes are undocumented or escalations are vague. Practice writing exact notes: what changed, when it changed, what was observed, what was tested, and who owns the next action.
Choosing a path only for its headline salary
High medians usually reflect experienced workers. A path that matches your preferred work mode and provides credible first experience may produce better long-term results than a role you dislike but selected for a national statistic.
Bottom line: how to choose
Pick data-center operations when you want hands-on infrastructure, can work safely under procedures, and are comfortable with on-site or rotating coverage. Pick software development when you want code to be your primary tool and are prepared to build a portfolio or meet a degree-oriented hiring market. Pick IT support, administration, or security when you prefer troubleshooting and operating systems, networks, and controls; use support as a launch point if you plan to specialize.
For pay, the cited May 2024 U.S. medians rank software development at $131,450, information security at $124,910, network and systems administration at $96,800, and computer support at $61,550. For opportunity, data-center employment rose from 306,000 to 501,000 between 2016 and 2023, while operator surveys report persistent skills gaps. Your best decision comes from matching a specific job’s duties, education screen, schedule, location, and advancement path to the way you want to work.
