For a website or browser-based dashboard, the documented route is WeatherKit’s REST API; Apple-platform apps can also use its native framework. Before switching, check the data your dashboard needs, whether it is available for each location, the usage tier, and Apple’s display and data-use rules.
Is the Dark Sky API still working?
Apple says Dark Sky API support ended on March 31, 2023. A dashboard that still calls a Dark Sky endpoint or depends on a Dark Sky key should be treated as a legacy integration, not a supported service to build around. Apple directs developers to WeatherKit as the successor. Apple’s Dark Sky transition guidance describes the end of support and points to WeatherKit.
Which WeatherKit access method fits a dashboard?
For a website or a platform outside Apple operating systems, use the WeatherKit REST API. Apple-platform apps may use the native WeatherKit framework instead. Apple’s WeatherKit overview describes the service and its supported access methods.
A dashboard migration is not necessarily a field-for-field replacement. Match the dashboard’s requirements to WeatherKit’s current API reference and the availability response for each location. Apple’s REST reference lists weather retrieval for latitude and longitude, historical or forecast weather, hourly and daily forecasts, next-hour forecasts, and weather alerts. Confirm current endpoint names, request parameters, response fields, and semantics in the live reference before changing production code.

- Kit represents the three core components of weather measurement: wind speed, wind direction and rainfall.
- It uses sealed magnetic reed switches and magnets so you'll need to source a voltage to take any measurements.
- All of the sensors in the weather meter kit are passive components. This means you will need a voltage source in order to measure anything with them.
- Sensors include Wind vane, Cup anemometer, Tipping bucket rain gauge. RJ11 terminated cables.
- Stand: Two-part mounting mast, Rain gauge mounting arm, Wind meter mounting bar, 2x Mounting clamps and 4x Zip ties.
What weather data and coverage should you check?
Apple describes current conditions and forecasts including 10 days of hourly information for measures such as temperature, precipitation, wind, and UV index. Minute-by-minute precipitation for the next hour and severe weather alerts are limited by region; do not assume that a Dark Sky feature or data set has an equivalent available everywhere.
Use WeatherKit’s availability endpoint to determine which data sets apply at the dashboard’s coordinates, then design the interface to handle unavailable data rather than presenting it as a failed or empty forecast. Apple’s consumer Weather coverage page can provide context, but Apple notes regional variation and it is not a substitute for checking WeatherKit availability for the actual dashboard locations. For example, Apple’s support page dated June 5, 2026 says 10-day forecasts are available in most countries and regions, and identifies next-hour precipitation coverage in Australia, Ireland, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Apple’s feature availability and data sources page also describes differences in severe-weather and air-quality sources by region.

How to plan the migration
- Inventory the existing dashboard. Record its Dark Sky requests, displayed fields, forecast horizons, alert behavior, refresh frequency, and supported locations. Separate essential requirements from features that can be omitted if the replacement does not offer an equivalent.
- Set up WeatherKit access. Follow Apple’s current developer-token setup and REST API guidance for the application that will make requests. For a web dashboard, plan to call the REST API rather than depending on a Dark Sky endpoint. Keep credentials and token-signing material out of public client code; use an appropriate server-side component where needed to protect them.
- Check location-specific availability. Query the WeatherKit availability endpoint for each relevant location and select only the data sets the response supports. Build graceful fallbacks for unavailable next-hour precipitation or alert data.
- Map and validate fields. Compare each old display element with the current WeatherKit response and documentation. Verify units, timestamps, forecast periods, missing values, and alert behavior; do not assume identical definitions or timing just because two services use similar labels.
- Update attribution and alert presentation. Apply Apple’s required attribution and source links anywhere Apple weather data appears, and implement the additional rules for severe alerts before launch.
- Estimate request volume and monitor it. Count API calls generated by locations, visitors, refresh intervals, and data sets. Compare the expected monthly total with Apple’s published tiers, then monitor actual usage and re-check the live terms as they can change.
What do WeatherKit usage tiers cost?
Apple’s developer page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists the following monthly API-call allowances and US-dollar prices. The 500,000-call allowance is included with Apple Developer Program membership; the other figures are paid monthly tiers. Prices and terms are time-sensitive, so verify them on Apple’s live page before committing to a budget.

Apple says unused calls do not roll over. Its pricing page also says an upgrade starts a new billing period and resets the quota, while a downgrade leaves the current plan in place through its billing period. Check Apple’s current WeatherKit pricing and program details for the terms that apply to your account.

What attribution and data-use rules apply?
Apple requires apps, web apps, and websites that display Apple weather data to show the Apple Weather trademark and a legal link to other data sources. Severe weather alerts have extra presentation conditions: include Apple’s link to alert details and the issuing meteorological agency’s full name, and do not change, alter, or obscure the severe-alert text. Review Apple’s WeatherKit requirements and implement the relevant attribution wherever the data is displayed.
Apple’s developer agreement prohibits designing or marketing a WeatherKit app for emergency or life-saving purposes. It also prohibits bulk downloads or feeds of Apple weather data and attempts to extract or scrape it. A general-purpose dashboard should not be presented as an emergency-warning system. When should you choose a different provider?
WeatherKit is Apple’s documented successor to Dark Sky, but that does not establish it as the only suitable provider or the best option for every dashboard. Compare providers against the dashboard’s required fields and geographic coverage, available access method, expected request volume and cost, attribution obligations, and data-use restrictions. If a required data set is unavailable at a key location or a term does not fit the product, assess another provider rather than promising a one-for-one migration.
