Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II is a standalone, 10-episode anime set in the same Night City and dark-future universe as Cyberpunk 2077. It is not a continuation of David Martinez’s story. The new series follows a different crew, with a veteran edgerunner called Weak and a revenge-driven netrunner called D, and it premieres exclusively on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
What is the confirmed connection between Edgerunners II and Cyberpunk 2077?
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II as “a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077.” That wording answers the central question: the anime and game share a fictional universe, setting and lore framework, but the sequel is written to work as its own story rather than retell the game’s plot.
Both works are built around Night City, a metropolis where advanced technology, cybernetic body modification, corporate power, gangs, mercenary work and severe inequality shape everyday life. The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners used the same model. Netflix introduced that series as a standalone 10-episode story “set in the same universe as the upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077.” Edgerunners II applies that shared-world approach to a fresh crew and a new dramatic conflict.
Think of the relationship as an anthology within one setting. The game gives you an interactive role in Night City, while each anime supplies an authored account of people trying to survive its systems. Events, institutions and terminology can carry across the works without requiring the same protagonist or a single linear plot.

When does Edgerunners II release, and who made it?
The series premieres exclusively on Netflix on October 20, 2026. The announced date is future-dated relative to October 19, 2026, so authoritative announcements establish the premiere and platform but do not establish that the complete season is already streamable before that date.

The official description promises “a new story, fresh characters, and an even more raw, brutal take on the world of the dark future.” That is a creative continuation of the franchise’s setting and tone, not an announcement that the original protagonists return.
Is Edgerunners II a continuation of David Martinez’s story?
No direct continuation of David Martinez has been announced. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch announcement states, “David is dead. But Night City lives on.” The sequel is repeatedly identified as standalone and centers on a new cast.

The sequel can explore consequences, themes or institutions familiar from the first anime without turning David into its lead. Until an official episode synopsis says otherwise, claims about David appearing, narrating, returning through a flashback or influencing the plot are speculation.
This also means Edgerunners II should not be marketed as “season two of David’s story.” The accurate description is a standalone sequel or new story in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
What is the new story about?
The announced premise combines redemption and revenge in a Night City built around violence and spectacle. Its two central figures begin from very different positions.

Weak, formerly known as King
Weak is a veteran edgerunner who was once known as “King.” He now lives without chrome and is searching for purpose after his period of glory has passed. His situation gives the series a perspective that differs from a newcomer’s rise: he has already experienced status, danger and the costs of the profession, then has to decide what remains when that identity no longer works.

D is a Snake Nation netrunner pursuing the person who killed D’s clan. That objective supplies the revenge side of the story and places a specific community, rather than only an individual grudge, at the center of the conflict.
The wider crew and power players
The official cast information identifies several other figures whose jobs and backgrounds show how broadly the sequel can view Night City:
- Roman Carax: a cinephile documenting truth in a city that has shifted from film toward braindance.
- Talia: raised in corporate towers and hardened by Maelstrom.
- Avida: a former jazz singer and corporate insider.
- Sal: owner of Sal Bigelow’s Braindance Paradise.
- Jessie: a braindance engineer.
- Kitano: an Arasaka corporate employee.
- Richard: a Kang Tao corporate employee.
These descriptions establish roles and affiliations, not a complete map of alliances. The official material does not yet explain which characters join Weak and D, who survives, or how each corporation and gang affects the central conflict.
Which parts of Cyberpunk 2077 carry over?
Night City as the shared stage
Night City is the clearest continuity link. The game lets a player move through the city and carve out a personal path; the anime follows selected residents whose choices are authored by the writers. Locations, social divisions and the city’s visual language can feel familiar even when the cast and immediate plot are new.

The dark-future world-building
Both stories use the same foundational pressures: technology that can alter the body, corporations with enormous power, criminal and mercenary economies, gangs that control territory or identity, and inequality pushed to an extreme. Cyberware is not merely decoration in this setting; it is part of how people work, fight, present themselves and risk losing control of their own bodies.

What “edgerunner” means
Netflix defines an edgerunner as a mercenary outlaw, also known as a cyberpunk. The term describes a role in the world rather than a single team. Different characters can enter that life for money, survival, loyalty, revenge or a search for purpose.
Different viewpoints in one canon
Cyberpunk 2077 is player-directed role-playing: your decisions shape the route through the dark future. The anime is fixed television storytelling, so it can concentrate on a specific crew, emotional arc and ending. Those formats complement rather than replace each other. Playing the game does not unlock a required episode, and watching the anime does not determine your game choices.
Does the sequel follow the game’s timeline or endings?
The confirmed material establishes a shared universe and setting, but it does not publish a detailed chronology tying Edgerunners II to a particular Cyberpunk 2077 campaign. No official announcement says that the sequel imports the player character V, Johnny Silverhand, a selected game ending or a branch-specific outcome.

That distinction matters because the game is designed around player choice. Treating one ending as the mandatory background for the anime would turn an unconfirmed interpretation into canon. Until official story material identifies a game event, character or date, regard theories about direct cameos, ending reconciliation and crossover appearances as fan speculation.
Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 before watching?
No. The standalone designation means a first-time viewer can begin with Edgerunners II without playing the game or watching the 2022 anime. The series is intended to provide its own characters, conflict and context.
Prior familiarity can still change what you notice. A player may recognize the logic of cyberware, corporate factions, gang culture and Night City’s economic hierarchy more quickly. That is added context, not a prerequisite. Conversely, starting with the anime lets a newcomer learn the setting through a focused human story before facing the game’s much larger interactive world.

The key comparison is agency versus authorship. The game can show more of Night City because you can investigate, travel and choose activities. An anime can instead control pacing, point of view and emotional escalation across ten episodes. Neither format is a substitute for the other.

What new characters should viewers know about?
Weak and D are the narrative anchors, but the supporting cast signals several themes likely to matter: media and truth through Roman Carax; corporate privilege and gang survival through Talia; performance and insider knowledge through Avida; the braindance economy through Sal and Jessie; and corporate power through Kitano and Richard.

The cast list does not by itself reveal who is heroic or trustworthy. “Corporate,” “gang-affiliated,” “engineer” and “owner” describe a character’s position, not a moral verdict. Avoid assuming that an Arasaka or Kang Tao employee automatically fills the same role as a game faction, or that a braindance professional is a neutral observer. The series’ announced premise is about people navigating violence and spectacle, so alliances may be as unstable as the city around them.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II is announced as a Netflix exclusive for its October 20, 2026 premiere. Regional catalog timing, language options and subscription requirements can vary, so check the Netflix listing for your country on release day.
For a directly related print story, KADOKAWA identifies Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS Volume 1 as an official prequel about Rebecca and Pilar before they meet David and the other protagonists. The English edition from Dark Horse is listed for February 24, 2026. It expands the earlier anime’s lore; it is not presented as a prerequisite for Edgerunners II.
KADOKAWA also recorded that the Cyberpunk 2077 video game had sold over 30 million copies worldwide in 2025. That is a dated, attributed figure, not a current lifetime-sales claim for 2026.

The safest way to understand the connection is therefore simple: the same city and dark-future rules, different protagonists and an independently watchable plot. David’s tragedy is over; Night City remains large enough for another crew to make its own dangerous history.
