Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a dense, continuous-feeling city, driving, real-time shooting and melee, cybernetic character builds, and a cinematic story expanded by Phantom Liberty. Choose The Outer Worlds for a more compact, location-based journey where faction politics, dialogue, companions, flaws, and satirical corporate world-building drive the role-playing.

Both are single-player science-fiction RPGs built around consequential decisions, but they deliver very different rhythms. Cyberpunk 2077 makes Night City itself the main playground; The Outer Worlds connects several settlements and stations into a colony you explore in distinct legs. Neither is objectively better, and this comparison avoids unsupported claims about map size, universal performance, sales, or review scores.

Cyberpunk 2077 and The Outer Worlds at a glance

Role-playing emphasis Build experimentation, cybernetic upgrades, branching quests, relationships, and cinematic set pieces. Dialogue, faction alignment, companion missions, character flaws, and end-game consequences.
Tone Dark, adult cyberpunk tragedy focused on identity, technology, power, and survival. Colorful, satirical corporate-colony science fiction with an emphasis on absurd institutions and competing interests.
Major expansion Phantom Liberty, a spy-thriller story in Dogtown, launched September 26, 2023. Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos, two narrative expansions.
Best fit Players who want a living-feeling city, driving, action combat, and a large cinematic campaign. Players who prefer compact exploration, conversations, companions, and choices that steer factions and endings.

What Cyberpunk 2077 is

CD PROJEKT RED launched Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG set in Night City. You play V, a mercenary whose attempt to steal an implant tied to immortality entangles them with powerful people and a threat to their own identity. The publisher describes player choices as shaping both the story and V’s relationships with the people encountered in Night City.

Night City is designed as a continuous urban space. You can travel through neighborhoods on foot or in vehicles, accept optional gigs, pursue side activities, and move between main-story missions without selecting a separate “chapter” destination each time. The result is a game where the city’s streets, traffic, buildings, and quest markers form a single routine: roam, discover a job, alter your build, and decide how to approach the next encounter.

The open-world label does not mean every activity is equally important or that every outcome is completely unconstrained. The main story still follows authored sequences, and some missions become unavailable after particular decisions. Its strength is the density of opportunities around the main path and the way quests, relationships, and build choices intersect.

Combat, cyberware, and builds

Combat runs in real time. Firearms and melee weapons support direct attacks, while stealth and hacking let you solve some encounters without a straightforward firefight. Cyberware and skills let you specialize, then respec or adjust your approach as you understand which abilities suit your preferred style. Vehicles are part of both traversal and the game’s action staging, so driving is a meaningful difference from The Outer Worlds.

Phantom Liberty adds a new skill tree alongside additional gigs, side quests, weapons, items, and repeatable open-world activities. Those additions broaden build planning and give the expansion’s district, Dogtown, its own ongoing activity loop rather than treating it as a single linear quest chain.

What The Outer Worlds is

Obsidian Entertainment calls The Outer Worlds a single-player first-person science-fiction RPG. Its protagonist is a colonist who wakes after spending decades in transit and is pulled into a conspiracy threatening the Halcyon colony. Obsidian lists Windows, Steam, Epic Games, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions; the studio gives October 25, 2019, as the original release date.

Halcyon is best understood as a multi-location colony RPG. You travel among settlements, space stations, and other destinations, each with its own factions, local conflicts, and characters. Areas are explorable once you arrive, but the overall journey is segmented by travel and mission selection rather than presented as one uninterrupted metropolitan map. That structure makes the game easier to digest in shorter sessions and keeps each location’s political problem in focus.

Dialogue, factions, and companions

Conversation choices are central rather than decorative. Decisions can alter faction relationships, change how the story develops, redirect companion stories, and affect end-game scenarios. Skill checks in dialogue and other interactions reward building a character around a particular set of competencies, while faction alignment can open some solutions and close others.

Companions are active participants with personal missions and opinions. Taking a companion into the field can change available conversations and combat options, and their goals may conflict with the interests of a faction you are supporting. The optional flaw system adds another role-playing trade-off: accepting a permanent drawback in response to a repeated danger can grant an additional perk, but only if the drawback fits the kind of character you want to play.

Is The Outer Worlds open world like Cyberpunk 2077?

No. Cyberpunk 2077 offers a primary open-world city intended to be crossed freely by foot or vehicle. The Outer Worlds offers connected but distinct locations across the Halcyon colony. You still explore, find optional quests, choose routes through settlements, and return to earlier places, but you do so through a sequence of destinations and travel transitions.

This distinction affects pacing more than quality. Cyberpunk 2077 encourages unscheduled detours: a short drive can become a chain of gigs, a street encounter, or a discovery that changes your next objective. The Outer Worlds encourages deliberate planning: choose a destination, talk to its residents, assess the local factions, and decide which problem to solve before moving on. If “open world” means a seamless city with driving, Cyberpunk 2077 is the clear match. If it means freedom to decide whom to help and which ideology to support, both games qualify in different ways.

How the gameplay systems differ

Action and encounter design

Cyberpunk 2077 is built around moment-to-moment action. Gunfights, melee encounters, hacking opportunities, stealth routes, and vehicle sequences are integrated into cinematic quests. Your cyberware and skill choices can change how an encounter begins and how quickly it ends, so experimentation is rewarded even when the objective stays the same.

The Outer Worlds also uses real-time first-person combat, but its identity is more closely tied to the surrounding conversation and faction context. A battle may be avoidable, shortened, or made easier by a prior dialogue decision, a skill investment, or the companion you bring. The game’s combat is therefore one part of a broader role-playing puzzle rather than the primary expression of freedom.

Character progression

Cyberpunk 2077 asks you to think in terms of a combat or infiltration build: cyberware, skills, weapons, hacking, stealth, and mobility can reinforce one another. The expansion adds another skill tree, giving players who own Phantom Liberty additional progression decisions in Dogtown and the wider Night City campaign.

The Outer Worlds combines character skills with dialogue and faction outcomes. Your build influences which conversations and solutions are available, while the flaw system offers a voluntary risk-and-reward decision. Companions add another layer because their personal missions and abilities make party composition relevant to both storytelling and encounters.

Traversal and downtime

Driving is a defining Cyberpunk 2077 activity: vehicles let you cross Night City quickly and are woven into missions and exploration. The Outer Worlds has no equivalent urban driving loop; its travel is organized around selecting colony destinations and exploring each site on foot. That makes Cyberpunk 2077 better for players who enjoy simply moving through a city, while The Outer Worlds is better for players who prefer arriving somewhere with a clear local objective.

Choices, companions, and tone

How choices work in Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077’s decisions often emerge inside cinematic missions and personal relationships. A conversation can alter trust, change who appears later, or determine which outcome is available. The game’s central themes—identity, technology, power, and survival—give those choices a serious, frequently tragic tone. You are not just optimizing a faction reputation; you are deciding what V is willing to sacrifice and which relationships matter under pressure.

How choices work in The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds foregrounds faction politics and ideological conflict. Corporations, workers, rebels, scientists, and companions all want different futures for Halcyon. Dialogue and quest decisions can shift the balance among them, and the consequences extend to companion stories and the ending. Its satire makes the same moral problem feel different: bureaucracy, branding, and corporate slogans are treated as part of the absurdity rather than only as background world-building.

Which game has better companions?

That depends on what you want from a companion system. The Outer Worlds makes companions an explicit role-playing pillar: they have personal missions, strong opinions, and goals that can intersect with faction choices. Cyberpunk 2077 places more emphasis on V’s relationships and the cinematic presentation of individual characters within the main story and side quests. Choose The Outer Worlds if companion management and party conversations are your top priority; choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you prefer relationship arcs embedded in a larger action narrative.

Platforms, patches, and streaming

Obsidian lists The Outer Worlds for Windows, Steam, Epic Games, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Its Switch announcement says the physical release uses a cartridge and may require a day-one patch of up to 6 GB. Treat that figure as a documented maximum for that release announcement, not a guarantee that every current installation or region needs the same download.

CD PROJEKT RED states that the GOG and Steam versions of Cyberpunk 2077 support streaming through NVIDIA GeForce NOW. Cloud availability can change, and streaming quality depends on your connection, data-center access, and the current service catalog. Check the service and storefront pages immediately before buying.

Do not assume that one game runs better on every platform. Performance depends on hardware, operating-system version, patch level, graphics settings, and whether you are using a current-generation console, an older console, a PC, or a streamed session. The available evidence here does not establish a universal performance winner or a current benchmark comparison.

Which game should you buy?

Your priority Better fit Why
A city you can cross freely by foot or vehicle Cyberpunk 2077 Night City is the central open-world playground, with driving, gigs, side activities, and dense street-level travel.
Faction politics and dialogue-led problem solving The Outer Worlds Choices directly shape faction relationships, story development, companion missions, and ending scenarios.
Cybernetic builds, hacking, stealth, and action combat Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberware, skills, weapons, vehicles, and multiple encounter approaches are core systems.
Companion missions and party-based role-playing The Outer Worlds Companions have personal stories, opinions, abilities, and goals that can conflict with your choices.
A dark, serious cyberpunk drama Cyberpunk 2077 Its story focuses on identity, technology, power, and survival in an adult dystopian setting.
Satirical corporate science fiction The Outer Worlds Its colorful colony setting uses corporate absurdity and faction conflict as the foundation of its tone.
Base game and major expansion in one purchase Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition The publisher defines the edition as containing both Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty.
A shorter, more segmented colony journey The Outer Worlds Its destinations are distinct locations, making progression more focused than a continuous city sandbox.

Pick Cyberpunk 2077 if…

  • You want the open-world feeling to come from constant movement through one dense urban environment.
  • Driving, real-time gunplay, melee, hacking, stealth, and cybernetic upgrades sound more appealing than extensive dialogue management.
  • You prefer a cinematic main story with relationship choices embedded in action missions.
  • You want the complete base-game-plus-expansion package and your platform is covered by the Ultimate Edition announcement.

Pick The Outer Worlds if…

  • You want each settlement or station to present a self-contained political problem.
  • You care most about faction alignment, dialogue checks, companion stories, and consequences that reach the ending.
  • You enjoy choosing optional flaws that trade a lasting drawback for a perk.
  • You prefer a satirical, colorful tone to Cyberpunk 2077’s darker tragedy.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify your platform. Check the current PC or console storefront, because supported editions and upgrade paths vary.
  2. Confirm the contents. For Cyberpunk 2077, verify whether the listing is the base game or Ultimate Edition. For The Outer Worlds, check whether Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos are included.
  3. Check your region and language options. Digital and physical listings can differ by territory, and storefront names are not always identical.
  4. Allow for patches. The Outer Worlds’ Switch physical release was documented as potentially requiring a day-one download of up to 6 GB. Other platforms may also require updates before play.
  5. Review streaming requirements. If you plan to use NVIDIA GeForce NOW for Cyberpunk 2077, confirm that your GOG or Steam version and location are supported at the time of purchase.
  6. Plan for the kind of session you want. Cyberpunk 2077 suits open-ended roaming and long action sequences; The Outer Worlds suits focused visits to individual locations and conversation-heavy quests.

Verdict

Cyberpunk 2077 is the stronger choice for players who define an RPG by its world-in-motion: a dense city, vehicles, action combat, cybernetic specialization, and a cinematic campaign with the option to add the Dogtown spy thriller. The Outer Worlds is the stronger choice for players who define role-playing by authored decisions: faction alignment, companion goals, dialogue checks, flaws, and endings shaped by the kind of colonist you become.

If you are undecided, use the setting and structure as the tie-breaker rather than trying to rank them. Choose Night City for continuous urban exploration and action; choose Halcyon for a segmented colony journey where conversations and political choices carry the most weight. For Cyberpunk 2077 buyers who want everything in one package, the publisher’s Ultimate Edition is the relevant edition; for The Outer Worlds buyers, verify the current listing and expansion contents on your chosen platform.
