No. You can follow and enjoy Cyberpunk: Edgerunners without playing Cyberpunk 2077. Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED both describe the anime as a standalone, 10-episode story set in the same universe as the game. Playing the game first is optional context: it can make Night City, cyberware, corporations, gangs and visual references feel more familiar, but it is not required homework.
What the official descriptions mean by “standalone”
Netflix’s Media Center describes Edgerunners as “a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future.” That wording means the series is designed to establish its own characters, conflict and setting for viewers who are starting there.

CD PROJEKT RED used the same distinction in its 2020 announcement, calling the show “an all new original anime series set in the same universe as the upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077” and again identifying it as a standalone 10-episode story. The company’s official Cyberpunk page also presents the Netflix anime as a standalone production created with Studio Trigger.
In practical terms, the anime does not assume that you know the game’s controls, quest history, character relationships or ending. Its central cast and plot are introduced on screen. You may notice names, places or concepts that also exist in the game, but recognition is a bonus rather than a condition for understanding what is happening.

What playing Cyberpunk 2077 adds
The game and anime share the broad setting of Night City and the same cyberpunk vocabulary. A player may therefore get extra pleasure from details that a first-time viewer simply accepts as part of the world.
Locations and city geography
Players who have explored Night City can recognize districts, landmarks, streets and the visual language of the city. That recognition can make an establishing shot or a brief visit feel like a return to a familiar place. A new viewer still receives the information needed for the scene; the difference is the extra layer of familiarity.
Cyberware and technology
The game provides more time to see how cyberware, weapons, vehicles and other technologies fit into everyday life. Someone arriving from the game may identify a device or body modification immediately. Someone watching only the anime can understand its function from the characters’ actions and dialogue without knowing the game’s item systems.

- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
Corporations, gangs and slang
Names associated with Night City’s corporations, gangs and street culture may carry more associations for players. The game’s longer interactive format also gives those groups room to appear in different missions and contexts. The anime supplies the context needed for its own scenes, so prior exposure changes the amount of background you recognize, not whether the scene is intelligible.
Visual references and easter-egg value
Playing first can turn a background detail into a reference you notice immediately. These moments are enrichment and easter-egg value; they are not stated prerequisites in the official descriptions. There is no official figure from Netflix or CD PROJEKT RED showing how many viewers watched without playing first, so claims about a majority or a typical audience would be speculation.
Should you watch Edgerunners before or after the game?
Neither order blocks comprehension. Choose based on whether you want the anime to be your introduction to the setting or prefer to learn Night City through an interactive game first.

|---|---|---|---|
| Watch the anime first | A self-contained introduction with a 10-episode commitment; every major character and rule needed for the story is presented in the series. | You may miss some game-related recognitions on a first viewing, although they are not required to follow the plot. | Viewers whose priority is the anime’s story or who do not yet know whether they want a large role-playing game. |
| Play the game first | More time to explore Night City and become familiar with its locations, technology, factions and terminology. | The game is a substantially larger time commitment than a 10-episode series, and its experience is built around interactive exploration rather than the anime’s specific plot. | Players who enjoy learning a setting by exploring it themselves. |
| Play and watch independently | You can treat each as a separate story in one shared universe and choose whichever format suits your schedule. | Connections may be less immediately recognizable if you move between them without trying to map every detail. | Anyone who wants both experiences without turning one into required preparation for the other. |
If you are deciding right now, start with Edgerunners when the adaptation is what you want to see. Move to Cyberpunk 2077 afterward if the setting interests you enough to spend more time in it. Starting with the game is equally valid for players who prefer interactive discovery.

Does Edgerunners spoil Cyberpunk 2077?
The two works have distinct central characters and plots, and the official material emphasizes that the anime is an original, standalone story rather than a retelling of the game. That makes it inaccurate to describe playing first as universally necessary to avoid spoilers.
They do occupy the same universe, so a viewer can encounter shared world elements, references or locations that a game player might recognize. The available official descriptions do not establish a universal “spoiler-free” order or quantify how much knowledge transfers between the stories. If avoiding any possible cross-reference matters to you, play first; if you mainly want to understand the anime on its own terms, watch first without expecting the game’s plot to be explained.

Is Edgerunners a direct adaptation of the game?
No. CD PROJEKT RED calls it an original anime series set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077, while Netflix calls it a standalone story. “Adaptation” is therefore best understood as a screen story using the game’s world and creative foundation, not a scene-by-scene conversion of the game’s campaign.
This distinction explains why the show can introduce its own protagonist and supporting cast while still using recognizable Night City concepts. You do not need to know the game’s player character, mission order or decisions to understand the anime’s narrative choices.
A practical first-time viewing plan
If you have never played the game
- Watch the 10 episodes in order without pausing to research every unfamiliar term.
- Use the series’ dialogue, action and visual context to understand the technology and social groups relevant to each episode.
- Afterward, decide whether you want the game’s interactive exploration, a replay focused on spotting shared references, or neither. The anime does not create an obligation to buy or complete the game.
If you have played the game
- Watch the series as its own story instead of treating it as a required side quest.
- Enjoy recognizable locations, terminology and visual motifs when they appear, but do not assume every detail is a clue to the game’s plot.
- Keep the formats separate in your expectations: the anime is a fixed 10-episode narrative, while the game lets you explore and make choices.
If you are worried about time
The anime is the smaller initial commitment because its length is defined as 10 episodes. The game offers a much longer interactive visit to Night City, but the official descriptions do not require completing it before viewing. Watching first lets you test your interest in the setting before taking on that larger commitment.

What about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2?
Netflix Tudum and CD PROJEKT RED describe Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 as another standalone story in the Cyberpunk 2077 world, with a new cast of characters. Its current official positioning likewise does not state that playing Cyberpunk 2077 is a prerequisite.
The announced plan identifies an October 20 premiere on Netflix. Premiere dates and availability can change, so check the current Netflix listing and CD PROJEKT RED announcement when you are ready to watch. A new cast and standalone positioning suggest that newcomers should not need the game as preparation, but the final release information remains the authority for episode details and availability.
Optional follow-up: the Edgerunners Mission Kit
If you want more Edgerunners lore without committing to the video game, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit is a relevant tabletop follow-up. Its product description lists an Edgerunners Handbook, a rule book, the full-length mission “The Jacket,” pre-generated Edgerunners, maps, standees, tokens and themed dice.

Quick Recap
The short decision
- Want the anime now? Watch it; no game knowledge is required.
- Want maximum setting familiarity first? Play the game, then watch.
- Concerned about spoilers? The works are separate stories in one universe; choose the order that best matches your tolerance for shared references.
- Want more after the show? The game offers interactive exploration, while the Mission Kit offers tabletop world-building.
