For a first purchase, get Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on a supported current platform. It combines the complete base game with Phantom Liberty, the game’s only full expansion. The free Edgerunners Update is already part of the modern base-game experience, so you do not need Phantom Liberty merely to receive the anime-inspired content.
Buy the base game alone if you want to test Night City first or find it at a substantially lower price. Buy Phantom Liberty separately when you already own the base game on the same platform or storefront. Before buying two separate products, compare their live combined price with Ultimate Edition.
What each Cyberpunk 2077 product actually includes
The names are easy to confuse because free updates, paid downloadable content and bundles are discussed together. The practical distinction is simple: the base game is the foundation, Phantom Liberty is a paid expansion, and Ultimate Edition packages both in one purchase.

CD PROJEKT RED describes Ultimate Edition as a package containing the base game and its spy-thriller expansion, together with Update 2.0 and free downloadable content. Updates are not exclusive to that bundle: for example, Update 2.3 is free to every base-game owner and does not require Phantom Liberty or Ultimate Edition.

Why Ultimate Edition is the default recommendation for Edgerunners fans
Someone arriving from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners usually wants the broadest version of Night City, not just the launch campaign. Ultimate Edition avoids a second purchase, gives immediate access to Dogtown and Phantom Liberty’s campaign, and keeps the ownership license in one package.
The expansion is also the most substantial post-launch story release, but it is not a continuation of David Martinez’s story. It follows V in a separate spy-thriller plot set partly in Dogtown. The anime and the game share a setting, themes and characters, yet the expansion should not be marketed as “the Edgerunners DLC.”
When the bundle is especially sensible
- You have never bought Cyberpunk 2077 and want the complete story package.
- You are purchasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 or a supported Apple silicon Mac.
- You prefer one license and one download rather than coordinating a base game and expansion.
- The bundle’s current regional price is close to, or lower than, the two products bought separately.
When not to buy Ultimate Edition automatically
- You already own the base game and the expansion on that same storefront or platform.
- The base game is on a much deeper sale and you are comfortable deciding about Dogtown later.
- You are on PS4 or Xbox One and are expecting the current complete experience; changing to supported hardware matters more than choosing a bundle.
The free Edgerunners Update versus Phantom Liberty
Watching the anime does not create a requirement to buy Phantom Liberty. The free Edgerunners Update added a full wardrobe transmog system, new weapons and equipment, new gigs and other anime-inspired items. That content is part of the updated base game and does not require the paid expansion.

Therefore, a fan who mainly wants David, Lucy or other anime references can start with the base game and receive the free crossover content. A fan who wants the largest complete role-playing package should add Phantom Liberty, either separately or through Ultimate Edition.
Platform-by-platform buying advice
PlayStation 5
Choose Ultimate Edition for PS5 for a new purchase. PlayStation’s current listing identifies content in the PS5 Ultimate Edition that is unavailable on PS4.

A PS5 is required for patches released after November 8, 2022 and for buying and playing Phantom Liberty. The base game can run on PS4, but the post-1.6 stream of new content and improvements moved to current-generation systems and PC. If your goal is Phantom Liberty or the complete modern game, upgrade to PS5 before spending money on the expansion.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X|S is the supported Xbox generation for Phantom Liberty and later new-content updates. A new Xbox buyer should select the Xbox Ultimate Edition. Do not treat an Xbox One copy as equivalent to the current package: the base game may be playable there, but Phantom Liberty was not developed for previous-generation consoles.

PC
PC supports the base game, Phantom Liberty and Ultimate Edition. The key decision is ownership continuity. If you already own the base game on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store or another supported storefront, check the expansion’s price on that same storefront and compare the total with any bundle offered there.
Buying the expansion on a different storefront generally does not solve an ownership problem. Keep the base game and DLC on the same storefront unless the store explicitly documents another entitlement arrangement. A new PC player should normally choose Ultimate Edition when its live price is competitive.
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 has an Ultimate Edition containing both the base game and Phantom Liberty. The release is available as a physical 64 GB game card and as a digital Nintendo eShop purchase. It also supports motion controls, gyro aiming, touch controls and mouse controls.

The Mac release is Ultimate Edition rather than a base-game-only launch. It requires an Apple silicon Mac with at least 16 GB of unified memory running macOS 15.5 or later. It is sold through the Mac App Store, GOG.com, Steam and Epic Games Store.
Existing owners on GOG, Steam or Epic can download the compatible Mac version without buying a second copy, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement. Confirm that your existing account and storefront entitlement are supported before attempting the download, and check the memory and operating-system requirements before purchasing a Mac copy.
Battle.net
On September 13, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED announced that Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty and Ultimate Edition would come to Battle.net later in 2026. The announcement says the base game and expansion will be sold separately as well as in the bundle.
That announcement is future-dated relative to October 19, 2026 and does not establish that the products are already live in every region. Verify the live Battle.net listing, release status and regional pricing before making a storefront-specific recommendation.

Why PS4 and Xbox One are poor choices for the complete experience
CD PROJEKT RED says that after Patch 1.6, further new content updates and improvements were made exclusively for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The company also says Phantom Liberty was not developed for previous-generation consoles because of its technical scope.
That creates a straightforward decision rule:
- Own only PS4 or Xbox One: buy the base game only if you specifically want the older version and do not expect Phantom Liberty or the complete later update stream.
- Want Phantom Liberty: move to PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC first.
- Buying a boxed last-generation copy: do not assume it equals Ultimate Edition or includes a playable expansion entitlement.
A last-generation box can still be a valid way to access the base campaign where supported, but it is not the right purchase for someone whose priority is the current complete package.
Should you buy the base game now and add Phantom Liberty later?
Yes, if the base game is substantially cheaper, you are uncertain about the expansion, or you already know you will play the main campaign first. The base game is a complete role-playing game in its own right and receives free updates available for your platform.
Before checkout, calculate the two-product total in the same storefront and region. Sales, taxes, currencies and platform pricing change, so a price seen in an old guide is not reliable. If the combined total is close to Ultimate Edition, the bundle is usually more convenient because it delivers both licenses in one purchase.

- Open the storefront account that owns your copy of Cyberpunk 2077.
- Confirm the platform generation: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 or supported Apple silicon Mac.
- Locate Phantom Liberty from that same account and read the requirement that the base game is needed.
- Compare the expansion’s current price with any Ultimate Edition upgrade or bundle shown for your account.
- Confirm that the edition matches your hardware and region before paying.
What “complete” means in Ultimate Edition
Ultimate Edition’s “complete” wording refers to the base game plus Phantom Liberty, Update 2.0 and free downloadable content. It does not mean every future update is permanently exclusive to the bundle, nor does it remove platform requirements. Free updates such as Update 2.3 are available to base-game owners too.

The meaningful paid difference is Phantom Liberty: its story, Dogtown setting and associated content. If you already own that expansion, buying Ultimate Edition again on the same platform may provide no additional value unless the storefront’s entitlement or upgrade rules say otherwise.
Physical, digital and ownership checks
Physical editions
Physical availability is most notable for PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm the exact platform printed on the box, the regional rating and whether Phantom Liberty is on the disc or supplied as a code. Do not infer the contents from a product photograph or a retailer’s shortened title.
Digital editions
Digital purchases simplify access but tie the base game and expansion to a storefront account. Keep both products on the same account whenever possible. On PC, this is especially important when deciding between Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store.
Used copies and transferred consoles
For a second-hand copy, inspect whether an expansion code has already been redeemed. A used disc or game card may grant the base game while a one-time Phantom Liberty code no longer works. Ask the seller or platform support to clarify the entitlement before treating a used package as Ultimate Edition.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming Edgerunners Update means Phantom Liberty: the anime crossover update is free; Phantom Liberty is paid.
- Buying Phantom Liberty without the base game: the expansion is not standalone.
- Choosing PS4 or Xbox One for Dogtown: Phantom Liberty requires supported current-generation hardware or PC.
- Buying two storefront licenses: keep the base game and expansion together unless compatibility is explicitly documented.
- Trusting an old price guide: compare the live regional price on the day you buy.
- Assuming every physical package is identical: disc, game-card and download-code arrangements vary by platform and region.
- Treating Ultimate Edition as update-exclusive: free updates are also delivered to eligible base-game owners.

Release timeline that affects your purchase
- September 26, 2023: Phantom Liberty released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- June 5, 2025: Ultimate Edition launched on Nintendo Switch 2 as a physical 64 GB game card and digital download.
- July 17, 2025: Ultimate Edition launched for Apple silicon Macs requiring at least 16 GB unified memory and macOS 15.5 or later.
- September 13, 2026: Battle.net availability was announced for later in 2026; verify the live store status before buying there.
For most Edgerunners fans, the conclusion is unchanged: choose Ultimate Edition on supported hardware, use the base game alone when price or commitment is the deciding factor, and purchase Phantom Liberty separately only when you already own the compatible base game.
