CuteFTP is a Windows FTP client: it connects to a remote server so you can browse folders, upload and download files, and maintain transfer jobs. It does not provide online storage or run an FTP server. To use it successfully, obtain the server’s approved protocol, address, port, authentication details, and any certificate or SSH-key requirements first; then create a site entry, connect, transfer files, and verify the result in the queue or connection log.

What CuteFTP does—and what it does not do

Globalscape describes CuteFTP as an entry-level client for basic FTP transfers. Its role is to provide a graphical connection to a server that already hosts the files. The server administrator or hosting provider remains responsible for the server, accounts, permissions, storage, and protocol support.

That distinction prevents a common setup error: installing CuteFTP does not create a reachable file server. You need an existing remote endpoint and an account authorized to use it. The local side is your Windows computer; the remote side is the server’s directory tree. CuteFTP displays both so you can move files between them.

The vendor summarizes the product as an application that gives users control over files transferred across multiple locations. In practical terms, the core workflow is:

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Collect connection and security requirements from the server owner.
  • Create and save a site entry.
  • Connect and authenticate.
  • Browse local and remote folders.
  • Select files or folders and start uploads or downloads.
  • Check the transfer queue and, when necessary, the connection log.

CuteFTP also includes site management, a connection wizard, an HTML editor for local or remote HTML documents, a Transfer Engine for recurring jobs, and COM-enabled scripting and programming interfaces. Globalscape states that the client can handle up to 100 concurrent transfers; that is a vendor-stated capability, not an independently measured speed result.

Before connecting: collect the right server details

Do not choose a protocol by guesswork. Ask the server administrator or hosting provider for the exact combination the account requires. Record the following before opening the wizard:

  • Server address: the host name or IP address.
  • Protocol: FTP, FTPS (SSL), HTTPS (SSL), or SFTP (SSH2), as supported by that server.
  • Port: use the value supplied by the administrator rather than assuming a default.
  • Authentication: user name and password, or the specified certificate, SSH key, or other method.
  • Initial directory: if the administrator requires you to start in a particular remote folder.
  • Transfer and permission rules: whether you may upload, overwrite, delete, rename, or create directories.

FTP, FTPS, HTTPS, and SFTP are not interchangeable labels. FTPS adds SSL/TLS to FTP; SFTP is an SSH2-based file-transfer protocol; HTTPS uses SSL/TLS over HTTP. A server may support only one of these choices. Ordinary FTP should not be treated as encrypted: confirm the approved secure option when credentials or files must be protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option shown by CuteFTP What it represents What you must confirm
FTP Standard File Transfer Protocol without the SSL/TLS layer Whether the server permits it and how credentials and traffic are protected
FTPS (SSL) FTP protected with SSL/TLS Required TLS behavior, certificate expectations, and port
HTTPS (SSL) File transfer through an HTTPS endpoint That the service exposes an HTTPS file-transfer interface and the required sign-in method
SFTP (SSH2) File transfer over SSH2 SSH credentials, private-key requirements, host-key handling, and port

OpenPGP encryption is listed separately among CuteFTP’s security options. It is an encryption feature, not proof that a particular remote server accepts OpenPGP. Use it only when the workflow and key exchange have been specified by the parties exchanging the files.

How to create a CuteFTP site connection

The connection wizard is the simplest starting point for a first site. Menu names can change between maintenance releases, so use the current online help if a label differs from the broad sequence below.

  1. Open the site-management or connection-wizard command. Start a new site entry rather than editing an unrelated saved site.
  2. Enter the server address. Copy the host name exactly as supplied. A typo here can produce a misleading timeout or name-resolution error.
  3. Select the required protocol. Choose FTP, FTPS, HTTPS, or SFTP according to the server’s instructions. Do not select SFTP merely because it sounds more secure if the endpoint is an FTP-only service.
  4. Enter the port. Replace any prefilled value when the administrator supplied a different one.
  5. Set authentication. Enter the account name and password, or configure the certificate or SSH key requested by the service. Treat saved credentials as sensitive local data.
  6. Configure security settings. For SSL/TLS or SSH connections, review the available security interfaces and certificate or host-key prompts. Stop and ask the administrator if a fingerprint or certificate does not match the expected service.
  7. Choose local and remote starting folders. A defined local working folder and remote directory reduce accidental transfers from the wrong location.
  8. Save the site entry and connect. A successful login should leave you with a local view, a remote view, and a status or transfer area.

If the server rejects the login, do not repeatedly retry with random protocols. Check the address, port, account status, authentication method, and the server’s access restrictions with the administrator.

Understanding the CuteFTP workspace

The main file-management task is a two-sided comparison. One pane represents folders on your Windows computer; the other represents folders on the connected server. Select a source item, choose the destination pane, and start the operation using the transfer command or the interface’s supported drag-and-drop action.

Local files

Use the local pane to locate the files you intend to publish, archive, or retrieve. Confirm the full path before selecting a large folder. A similarly named development or backup directory is an easy way to send the wrong version.

Remote files

The remote pane reflects the permissions granted by the server account. You may be able to list and download files without being allowed to upload, delete, rename, or create folders. An empty listing can indicate an incorrect starting directory or insufficient permission rather than an empty server.

Site management

Save a separate site entry for each environment, such as test and production, and give each a descriptive name. Keep protocol and account differences visible in the name so that a production site is not mistaken for a test site. Update the saved entry when the administrator changes a host, port, key, certificate, or password.

Uploading files to a remote server

Upload when the authoritative copy should move from your computer to the server. Before starting, verify the destination directory and the server’s overwrite policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect to the correct saved site.
  2. Open the local folder containing the source files.
  3. Open the intended remote destination folder.
  4. Select one or more files, or a folder when the server permits directory uploads.
  5. Start the upload with the transfer command or supported drag-and-drop action.
  6. Watch the transfer queue for completed, failed, or skipped items.
  7. Refresh or revisit the remote directory and confirm the files, names, sizes, and modification times.

When replacing a live file, check whether the server or application caches it. A completed transfer confirms that bytes reached the remote endpoint; it does not prove that a web application has reloaded the file or that permissions are correct.

Safer upload habits

  • Upload a small test file when connecting to an unfamiliar destination.
  • Use distinctive temporary names when an application could read a partially uploaded file.
  • Confirm the intended remote path before accepting an overwrite prompt.
  • Keep a local copy until the remote file has been verified and any required backup has completed.

Downloading files from a remote server

Download when the server copy is the source you need locally for editing, backup, or handoff.

  1. Connect and navigate to the remote directory containing the files.
  2. Choose a local destination with enough free space and the correct project or backup path.
  3. Select the remote files or folders.
  4. Start the download.
  5. Monitor the queue until every item reports completion or an explicit error.
  6. Open the local destination and verify names, sizes, timestamps, and—when the workflow provides one—an expected checksum.

Do not assume that a visible file is fully available locally while the queue is still active. For a large set, inspect failed and skipped entries individually; a mostly successful queue can still omit the one file you need.

Managing files after a connection

File operations depend on remote permissions and the server’s rules. CuteFTP can be used to maintain the remote directory, but every destructive action should be treated as an administrative change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rename and move

Use the remote file-management command only when the account is authorized to rename or move items. A rename can break links or application references even though it completes successfully. For a local reorganization, perform the equivalent operation in the local pane and then transfer the resulting structure.

Create directories

Create a remote directory only when the hosting layout allows it. Some services expose a fixed directory tree and will reject creation even though listing and downloading work.

Delete

Deletion is generally irreversible from the client’s point of view. Confirm the path, select the exact item, and keep a verified backup when the file has operational or compliance value.

Edit HTML documents

Globalscape documents an integrated, color-coded HTML editor that can open and edit local or remote HTML documents. Editing a remote document directly is convenient but risky: a save can publish a change immediately. For production sites, download a copy, edit and validate locally, retain the previous version, and upload only after review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unicode filenames

The official v9 guide documents Unicode filename support. If names contain accented characters or non-Latin scripts, verify that the server, operating system, and downstream application use the same expected encoding. A successful transfer with a changed or garbled name still requires correction.

Reading the transfer queue and connection log

The transfer queue is your first confirmation that an operation finished. Review each item’s state rather than relying on a general “completed” message. Look for failures, skips, retries, destination paths, and overwrite decisions.

For connection problems, Globalscape’s troubleshooting guidance points to the connection log. It records communications and commands exchanged during the session, which can reveal whether the failure occurred during name resolution, connection negotiation, authentication, directory listing, or a file operation.

A practical log-review sequence

  1. Reproduce the problem once so the latest entries are easy to identify.
  2. Find the first explicit error, not only the final “connection failed” line.
  3. Note the protocol, host, port, and authentication stage shown around that error.
  4. Compare those details with the administrator’s connection instructions.
  5. Send the relevant error text to the server administrator without exposing passwords, private keys, or full secrets.

Troubleshooting common CuteFTP connection failures

The server cannot be reached

Check the host name, port, local network access, and any firewall or allow-list requirement. If the log shows name-resolution failure, correct the address. If it shows a timeout, ask whether the service is restricted to particular networks or whether the supplied port is current.

Authentication is rejected

Verify the account name, password, account status, and authentication type. A password that works on a web portal may not be valid for the file-transfer endpoint. For SFTP, confirm the private key and any passphrase requirements. Do not paste private keys into password fields.

TLS or certificate negotiation fails

Confirm that the server expects FTPS or HTTPS rather than plain FTP, and review the certificate or TLS requirements. CuteFTP 9.4.0 adds TLS 1.3 support and updated OpenSSL components, but compatibility still depends on the server configuration. Treat an unexpected certificate identity or fingerprint as a stop signal until the administrator confirms it.

SFTP host-key or SSH-key errors appear

Confirm that the selected protocol is SFTP (SSH2), that the account has the right key, and that the host key is the one supplied or approved by the administrator. Release notes for version 9.4.0 mention fixes for SFTP connections to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or later and acceptance of SSH keys generated by Globalscape EFT Server; those are vendor release-note claims, not a guarantee for every SSH server.

Login succeeds but folders or files are missing

Check the remote starting directory and account permissions. The account may be confined to a chroot or a particular home directory. Ask the administrator which path should be visible and whether the missing operation is intentionally disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transfers stop or fail partway through

Inspect the queue and log for the first failed item. Check available local and remote space, permissions, filename rules, network stability, and any server size limit. Retry only after identifying the cause; repeated retries can create duplicate or partially replaced files.

Names change during transfer

Compare the local and remote character sets and review the server’s filename policy. Unicode support in the client does not override a server or application that cannot represent the same characters.

Automating recurring transfers

For occasional uploads and downloads, the interactive client is usually sufficient. Recurring work can use CuteFTP’s Transfer Engine and its COM-enabled scripting and programming interfaces. Globalscape describes these capabilities for scheduled script transfers, site backups or synchronization, and monitoring local folders for changes.

When automation is appropriate

  • A repeatable source and destination are known.
  • The account and protocol are stable.
  • Overwrite, retry, and failure-notification rules have been documented.
  • A person can review logs and respond to authentication or server changes.

Design an automated job safely

  1. Define the source and destination paths precisely.
  2. Choose the approved secure protocol and authentication method.
  3. Decide whether the job uploads, downloads, synchronizes, backs up, or only watches for changes.
  4. Set an overwrite policy and a way to preserve prior versions when required.
  5. Schedule a small test run and inspect its log.
  6. Add monitoring for failures, skipped files, and credential expiration.
  7. Document ownership and a manual recovery procedure.

The vendor’s “up to 100 concurrent transfers” figure may be relevant when designing a high-volume job, but it is not a promise that every server, network, disk, or account will sustain that level. Start conservatively and follow the remote service’s connection limits.

What changed in CuteFTP 9.4.0

The current release identified in Globalscape’s official notes is CuteFTP 9.4.0, released April 6, 2026. The notes list these changes:

  • TLS 1.3 support.
  • OpenSSL updated to 3.6.1.
  • OpenSSL FIPS module updated to 3.1.2.
  • OpenSSH updated to 9.8.1.
  • Interfaces for SSL/TLS and SSH security settings.
  • SFTP fixes for connections to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or later.
  • Acceptance of SSH keys generated by Globalscape EFT Server.

When CuteFTP is the right scale—and when it is not

CuteFTP is positioned by Globalscape for basic transfers by an individual or a small team using a Windows workstation. It is a reasonable fit when you need a saved site connection, interactive browsing, routine uploads or downloads, and optional scripting without deploying an organization-wide transfer platform.

Globalscape positions EFT as a Windows-based, on-premises managed file-transfer product for complex, mission-critical organizational workflows, and EFT Arcus as its cloud managed file-transfer service. Those products are not required to use CuteFTP; they represent a different deployment and governance scale. Evaluate the distinction using these questions:

Decision question CuteFTP-oriented answer Managed-transfer trigger
Who operates the workflow? An individual or small team on Windows Multiple departments, partners, or administrators need shared governance
What is being transferred? Routine files and site content Mission-critical exchanges with formal controls and monitoring
How much automation is needed? Interactive work, Transfer Engine jobs, or COM scripting Centralized orchestration, policy enforcement, and organization-wide operations
Where should it run? On a Windows workstation An on-premises managed platform or a cloud managed service
What must be evaluated? Protocol compatibility, credentials, permissions, and support status Deployment, authentication integration, auditability, support commitments, and total licensing cost

A dependable operating checklist

  • Confirm the server, protocol, port, authentication method, and destination path.
  • Prefer the secure protocol required by the server; never assume ordinary FTP encrypts traffic.
  • Use clearly named site entries for test and production environments.
  • Verify local and remote paths before every destructive or overwrite operation.
  • Wait for the queue to finish and inspect failures or skips.
  • Verify transferred files in the destination, not only in the queue.
  • Keep backups before deleting or replacing important remote files.
  • Use the connection log to diagnose the first explicit error.
  • Test automation with a small, reversible job before scheduling high-volume transfers.
  • Check the current release and lifecycle information before deploying CuteFTP in a supported business workflow.
