The practical answer: moving an AI workload between CUDA, AMD ROCm, and Intel oneAPI is a porting project, not a driver swap. Start by checking whether your framework version already supports the destination GPU. If it does, use that supported build and isolate only the custom CUDA extensions. For custom C++ and kernels, HIP/HIPIFY is usually the shortest route from CUDA to AMD. SYCL/DPC++ with SYCLomatic is the standards-oriented route to oneAPI and Intel GPUs, but it requires diagnostic review, library replacement, rebuilding, numerical validation, and destination-specific tuning. In every route, preserve a measured baseline before changing code and accept the port only after correctness, performance, memory use, and distributed scaling have been re-established.
What actually changes when you move a CUDA workload?
CUDA, ROCm, and oneAPI are separate software ecosystems. Similar API names or familiar kernel concepts do not make binaries, compilers, profilers, libraries, or deployment images interchangeable. AMD explicitly notes that ROCm and CUDA tools and APIs are not directly interchangeable, and that the work depends on the application and its dependencies.
A migration can touch every layer of an AI stack:
- Application and framework: PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, vLLM, SGLang, or another runtime must have a build and operator set for the destination backend.
- Custom kernels: CUDA C++, launch syntax, device intrinsics, architecture queries, PTX, inline assembly, and compiler flags may need source changes.
- Libraries and collectives: cuBLAS, cuFFT, cuRAND, cuSolver, cuSPARSE, cuDNN, NCCL, Thrust, and CUB each have to be mapped, replaced, or removed.
- Toolchain: compiler, runtime, driver, debugger, profiler, and device libraries must be a compatible set.
- Operations: containers, startup scripts, scheduler settings, device discovery, health checks, and distributed launch commands can all be vendor-specific.
Therefore, treat portability and peak performance as separate acceptance criteria. A program can produce correct results while being too slow, too memory-hungry, or unable to scale across multiple devices.
How CUDA, ROCm, and oneAPI differ
| Area | CUDA | AMD ROCm | Intel oneAPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary programming model | CUDA C++ runtime and kernel language | HIP C++ runtime and kernel language, with ROCm libraries and tools | SYCL/DPC++ for ISO C++ heterogeneous programming; OpenMP offload is another route |
| Closest migration path from CUDA | Native source | HIP and HIPIFY for supported CUDA constructs | SYCLomatic and DPC++, followed by manual edits |
| Library strategy | CUDA libraries and NCCL | ROCm equivalents; exact coverage depends on the library and GPU | oneMKL, oneDNN, oneDPL, oneCCL, plus any required backend plugin |
| Kernel portability | Optimized for NVIDIA GPU architectures | CUDA-shaped source can reduce mechanical changes, but AMD architecture tuning remains necessary | Standards-oriented source can target multiple devices, but generated code and performance still need target-specific work |
| Binary compatibility | CUDA binaries and tooling | Not binary-compatible with CUDA | Not binary-compatible with CUDA or ROCm |
| Acceptance requirement | Baseline for comparison | Correctness plus ROCm performance and scaling validation | Correctness plus oneAPI performance, driver, plugin, and scaling validation |
AMD describes HIP as “a C++ runtime API and kernel programming language designed for AMD GPUs.” Intel describes SYCL as a cross-platform abstraction layer that keeps host and kernel code in standard ISO C++ source. Those descriptions explain the trade-off: HIP preserves more CUDA-shaped concepts, while SYCL asks you to adopt a broader abstraction model.

Which migration route should you choose?
| Situation | Recommended first move | Why | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workload stays inside a supported PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, vLLM, or SGLang path | Install the destination vendor’s supported framework build | Minimizes source changes | Custom extensions, unsupported operators, or version mismatches can break the path |
| CUDA C++ kernels must run on supported AMD GPUs | HIPIFY/HIP, then inspect and tune | HIP follows many CUDA concepts and can reduce mechanical edits | Unsupported CUDA features, architecture assumptions, and library calls still require manual work |
| Intel GPU target or a long-term standards-based design | SYCLomatic/DPC++, then manual SYCL migration | SYCL can express heterogeneous host and device code in standard C++ | Conversion diagnostics, library replacement, plugin setup, and optimization add scope |
| One codebase must support several vendors for years | Dual-backend architecture with a stable internal interface | Vendor-specific kernels and libraries stay behind controlled boundaries | More build variants, tests, documentation, and maintenance |
Do not choose a route based only on API resemblance. Choose it after inventorying custom code, library calls, collective communication, framework operators, and the exact hardware and software versions you will deploy.
Migration prerequisites: inventory the workload before editing code
Create a machine-readable inventory for one production-equivalent revision. Include:
- CUDA runtime, driver, toolkit, compiler, and architecture flags.
- Every custom kernel, CUDA extension, PTX file, inline assembly block, and device intrinsic.
- Runtime and driver calls such as device enumeration, stream and event management, memory allocation, peer access, and graph APIs.
- CUDA libraries: cuBLAS, cuFFT, cuRAND, cuSolver, cuSPARSE, cuDNN, Thrust, CUB, and NCCL.
- Framework name, exact version, backend build, optional operator packages, and extension ABI.
- Container base image, operating system, kernel, driver package, compiler, Python version, and package lock files.
- Deployment scripts, scheduler flags, environment variables, health checks, telemetry, and distributed launch commands.
- Model checkpoints, tokenizer versions, representative datasets, precision modes, and expected output tolerances.
Mark each dependency as portable source, destination equivalent exists, requires a plugin, or must be redesigned. This classification reveals whether a framework-first switch is realistic or a kernel and library port is unavoidable.

Freeze a baseline you can defend
Run the unmodified CUDA workload with a fixed software environment and save the artifacts needed for an apples-to-apples comparison:
- Representative inputs, random seeds where applicable, and reference outputs.
- Numerical tolerances for logits, losses, gradients, generated tokens, and any post-processing metrics.
- End-to-end latency, steady-state throughput, batch-size behavior, startup time, and first-request latency.
- Peak and resident memory, host-device transfer volume, and allocation behavior.
- Kernel timelines, synchronization points, collective operations, and CPU utilization.
- Single-device and distributed scaling results, including failure behavior when a device is unavailable.
Record the hardware model, device count, driver, toolkit, framework, precision, sequence length, batch size, and measurement method with every result. A migration cannot be judged if the baseline changes at the same time as the backend.
Step-by-step: move CUDA workloads to AMD ROCm with HIP
1. Select an exact supported stack
Choose the AMD GPU model, operating system, kernel, ROCm release, compiler, framework version, and library versions before changing source. Check AMD’s current compatibility matrix for the specific GPU and framework combination. Compatibility is version- and configuration-dependent; a framework name alone does not guarantee that every operator or extension is available.
2. Try the supported framework build first
If the application is primarily PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, vLLM, or SGLang, install the ROCm build that AMD currently supports. Run the baseline test suite before touching custom code. This separates framework and operator availability problems from kernel-porting problems.

3. Convert custom CUDA C++ with HIPIFY as a starting point
HIPIFY can translate supported CUDA constructs into HIP-shaped source. Treat its output as an initial port, not as a finished implementation. Review every changed file and preserve the original source so that you can bisect regressions.
4. Inspect CUDA-specific assumptions
Search the converted code for architecture queries, warp or wavefront assumptions, hard-coded block sizes, PTX, inline assembly, unsupported intrinsics, cooperative features, texture or surface operations, graph APIs, and vendor-specific atomics. A CUDA warp is not a promise that the same execution width or scheduling behavior will deliver the same result on AMD hardware. Replace assumptions with HIP-supported abstractions or provide a separate implementation where necessary.
5. Map libraries and collectives
Replace CUDA library calls with the ROCm library that covers the same operation, or write a narrow abstraction around the operation. Check data types, algorithm selection, workspace requirements, stream semantics, error handling, and deterministic-mode behavior. NCCL-based distributed code needs an AMD-supported collective path and a new validation run; a source-level rename does not prove equivalent topology handling or scaling.
6. Rebuild for the target architecture
Compile the HIP source with the architecture flags for the actual AMD GPUs you will deploy. Do not rely on a generic build if the production device has a different instruction set, memory hierarchy, or supported feature set. Rebuild all native framework extensions and verify that the runtime loads the intended shared libraries rather than remnants from the CUDA image.

Start with a small representative workload, then expand to full model inputs and distributed execution. Compare outputs against the CUDA baseline using the tolerances defined earlier. Investigate NaNs, divergent control flow, reduction-order changes, unsupported precision modes, and nondeterminism before attempting optimization.
8. Tune for AMD rather than copying CUDA launch parameters
Profile occupancy, memory coalescing, cache behavior, host-device transfers, synchronization, kernel launch overhead, and collective communication. Revisit tile sizes, work-group dimensions, vectorization, fusion, and precision choices. HIP reduces source conversion effort; it does not remove the need to tune for AMD’s architecture.
Step-by-step: move CUDA workloads to Intel oneAPI with SYCL
1. Choose the Intel target and backend
Specify the Intel GPU model, operating system, Intel GPU drivers, oneAPI toolkit, DPC++ compiler, framework build, and required libraries. If the deployment target is an AMD or NVIDIA GPU through oneAPI, Intel’s workflow requires Codeplay’s corresponding plugin. The plugin is an additional runtime and support dependency, not a property of CUDA binaries.

2. Convert CUDA source with SYCLomatic
Use SYCLomatic to generate a DPC++/SYCL starting point. Intel states that CUDA API migration support is broad but not complete. Read every DPCT diagnostic, preserve the diagnostic output in the port review, and classify warnings as harmless, required manual edits, or blockers.
3. Apply manual SYCL and DPC++ edits
Conversion commonly requires changes to kernel submission, queue and event handling, memory management, synchronization, reductions, atomics, device selection, and unsupported CUDA features. Replace code that depended on PTX or inline assembly with a SYCL implementation or a target-specific extension. Confirm address spaces, pointer access, alignment, and lifetime rules rather than assuming that generated code has identical semantics.
4. Replace CUDA libraries deliberately
| CUDA dependency | Common oneAPI migration target | Review points |
|---|---|---|
| cuBLAS | oneMKL BLAS | Transpose conventions, workspace, precision, and stream or queue behavior |
| cuFFT | oneMKL FFT | Plan creation, layout, normalization, and batch semantics |
| cuRAND | oneMKL random-number functionality or a SYCL-compatible generator | Generator type, seeding, statistical expectations, and reproducibility |
| cuSolver | oneMKL solver functionality | Factorization support, pivoting, workspace, and error codes |
| cuSPARSE | oneMKL sparse functionality | Sparse format, index width, algorithm selection, and determinism |
| Thrust or CUB | oneDPL | Execution-policy behavior, scans, reductions, sorting, and temporary storage |
| cuDNN | oneDNN where the required operator is covered | Operator coverage, layouts, fused operations, and precision behavior |
| NCCL | oneCCL | Collective semantics, topology, process groups, and multi-device failure handling |
The mapping is conceptual, not a guarantee that every function has a drop-in equivalent. Confirm signatures, supported data types, error behavior, performance, and distributed semantics for each call.
5. Install drivers, plugins, and dependencies
Install Intel GPU drivers for Intel targets and the exact oneAPI runtime required by the build. For a supported AMD or NVIDIA target through oneAPI, install the appropriate Codeplay plugin and document its version alongside the toolkit. Keep all components in the same container or environment definition used for testing.
6. Build the converted source for the destination device
Intel’s migration workflow places compilation after conversion, manual edits, and dependency installation. Build every native extension and executable with the destination compiler and device target. Resolve compile warnings as migration work, not as cosmetic cleanup: an ignored warning can indicate changed pointer, synchronization, or numerical behavior.
7. Validate, then optimize
Run debug validation against the CUDA reference, including edge cases, empty tensors, odd dimensions, multiple streams or queues, and failure paths. After correctness is established, profile kernel occupancy, memory movement, queue dependencies, synchronization, and collectives on the actual deployment GPU. Generated SYCL code often needs algorithmic and memory-layout changes to approach the destination device’s capabilities.
Framework-first migration: when source changes can stay small
A framework-first migration is appropriate when the workload uses standard operators and the destination vendor publishes a compatible build. AMD lists PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, vLLM, and SGLang among its ROCm ecosystem options, while directing users to the current compatibility matrix. The same principle applies to oneAPI-enabled framework distributions: verify the exact release, device support, and operator coverage.

- Pin the framework, Python, compiler runtime, and model dependencies.
- Install the destination build in a clean environment rather than modifying the CUDA environment in place.
- Run model loading, a single inference, a training step, checkpoint save and restore, and representative batch sizes.
- Exercise optional operators, quantization, mixed precision, custom autograd functions, and extensions.
- Only then switch distributed execution and production serving.
Custom CUDA extensions remain the risk area. A framework can support the model while one fused attention kernel, quantization extension, tokenizer accelerator, or communication plugin blocks deployment. Keep those components isolated so they can be ported or replaced independently.
Designing a dual-backend codebase
If multi-vendor operation is a long-term requirement, create a stable internal interface for operations such as matrix multiplication, convolution, attention, normalization, random generation, reduction, and collective communication. Keep framework-independent tensor contracts above that interface and vendor-specific kernels and libraries below it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use capability detection rather than vendor-name conditionals scattered through model code.
- Keep separate build targets for HIP, SYCL/DPC++, and any native CUDA implementation.
- Define one numerical contract: accepted dtypes, tolerances, determinism expectations, and error behavior.
- Maintain backend-specific performance tests, not only functional unit tests.
- Version containers and lock files independently when driver or toolkit compatibility differs.
This architecture increases build and maintenance overhead, but it prevents a future migration from becoming a single large rewrite.
How to prove correctness after conversion
Use layered validation rather than one end-to-end score:
- Unit level: compare kernels and library wrappers on controlled tensors, including boundary dimensions and non-contiguous layouts.
- Model level: compare losses, logits, gradients, generated outputs, and checkpoint restoration against the CUDA baseline.
- System level: test batching, streaming, cancellation, retries, memory pressure, and startup behavior.
- Distributed level: test process groups, collective ordering, rank failure, restart, and scaling across the intended device count.
- Reproducibility level: record seed behavior and determine which differences are expected from reduction order or nondeterministic algorithms.
Use tolerances appropriate to the algorithm and precision. Exact bitwise equality is not always a valid requirement across architectures, but unexplained drift, unstable loss, or changed convergence is a release blocker.
How to measure and recover performance
Compare the destination against the frozen baseline with the same inputs, precision, batch or sequence lengths, and measurement window. Separate:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Kernel execution time from host-device transfer time.
- First-request and compilation or graph-capture overhead from steady-state throughput.
- Single-device efficiency from multi-device communication overhead.
- Memory capacity from allocator fragmentation and workspace reservations.
- Framework overhead from the performance of the converted custom kernel itself.
Typical causes of a slow but correct port include uncoalesced memory access, excessive synchronization, unsuitable work-group dimensions, repeated allocation, disabled fusion, fallback to host execution, unsupported precision paths, and collectives using an inefficient topology. Confirm the active device and loaded libraries before changing algorithms; a silent fallback can dominate the profile.

Deployment and rollback checklist
- Build a clean container or environment from pinned OS, driver-compatible runtime, compiler, framework, and library versions.
- Record the exact GPU model, device count, architecture target, and compatibility-matrix entry used for validation.
- Include startup checks that report backend, device name, driver, runtime, visible devices, and loaded native libraries.
- Run a smoke test that loads the model, executes representative inference or training, and verifies output tolerances.
- Package distributed launch settings and collective configuration with the image rather than relying on host defaults.
- Keep the known-good CUDA image and deployment manifest available for rollback.
- Phase production traffic gradually and monitor latency, throughput, memory, error rate, numerical health, and device resets.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Framework imports but an operator is missing | Unsupported version, backend build, or operator | Check the vendor compatibility matrix; replace the operator or isolate a custom implementation |
| HIPIFY code does not compile | Unsupported CUDA API, intrinsic, PTX, or inline assembly | Read the conversion output, implement a HIP equivalent, or provide a backend-specific kernel |
| SYCLomatic emits many diagnostics | CUDA feature has no automatic translation or needs semantic review | Resolve diagnostics systematically and test each changed abstraction |
| Correctness differs only in reduced values | Reduction order, precision, atomic behavior, or nondeterminism | Set explicit tolerances, inspect accumulation type and algorithm, and test deterministic modes |
| Single-device performance is acceptable but scaling is poor | Collective mismatch, topology, synchronization, or process-group configuration | Profile collectives and queues, verify the destination collective library, and test rank placement |
| Runtime loads the wrong library | Mixed CUDA, ROCm, or oneAPI paths in the environment | Use a clean container, inspect library paths at startup, and remove stale extensions |
| Performance regresses after a seemingly successful build | Generic architecture target, fallback kernel, transfer overhead, or lost fusion | Rebuild for the exact device and profile end to end before tuning individual kernels |
What a realistic acceptance gate looks like
Approve a migration only when all of these conditions are met for the intended production configuration:
- Every required framework operator, custom extension, library, and collective has a documented destination implementation.
- Representative outputs and training behavior meet the agreed numerical tolerances.
- Latency, throughput, memory, startup, and distributed scaling meet the service objective, or an explicit trade-off has been approved.
- The exact driver, toolkit, compiler, framework, library, container, and hardware combination is reproducible.
- Monitoring detects backend, device, runtime, memory, numerical, and communication failures.
- A tested rollback image and procedure exist.
The shortest successful migration is usually framework-first for standard models, HIP/HIPIFY for CUDA-heavy C++ targeting AMD, and SYCLomatic followed by manual SYCL work for oneAPI or Intel targets. None of those tools proves portability by itself. The destination GPU must earn acceptance through the same correctness and performance tests that justified the original CUDA deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can HIP run CUDA binaries directly?
No. HIP and ROCm are a separate software stack. HIP can preserve many CUDA-shaped source concepts and HIPIFY can translate supported code, but the result must be rebuilt, validated, and tuned for the AMD target.
Does SYCLomatic convert an entire CUDA application automatically?
No. It provides a broad starting point and emits diagnostics, but Intel documents manual edits, dependency replacement, rebuilding, validation, and optimization as required stages.
Is SYCL always more portable than HIP?
SYCL/DPC++ offers a standards-oriented model for heterogeneous C++ and can target multiple devices, while HIP is often the more direct route for CUDA-shaped code on AMD. Actual portability depends on libraries, extensions, plugins, and device-specific tuning.
How do I know whether a PyTorch model will work on ROCm or oneAPI?
Check the vendor’s current compatibility matrix for the exact framework release, GPU, operating system, driver, and supported operators, then run the model’s custom extensions and representative tests in a clean destination environment.
