There are no mandatory CSS media-query breakpoints for common screen sizes. Set a breakpoint where your content or layout needs to change—not because a device is labeled “phone,” “tablet,” or “desktop.” CSS width queries measure the browser viewport in CSS pixels, not the physical width of the screen.
What a CSS width media query measures
A media query tests the viewport or another browser or device feature so the browser can apply styles conditionally. For continuous media, a width query measures the viewport; when a rendered scrollbar is present, it is included. The px unit in media queries means CSS pixels, not physical screen pixels. See MDN’s media-query guide and the W3C Media Queries specification.
That distinction is why a list of device panel widths is not a reliable breakpoint plan. Browsers, zoom, orientation, and viewport dimensions affect the space available to a layout. Use viewport width as a condition for styling, not as a dependable label for a particular device.
How to choose a breakpoint
- Start with the content. Build a flexible narrow layout and check how it behaves as the available width grows.
- Find the point where it stops working well. Look for text lines that become awkward, navigation that wraps, columns that become cramped, or excessive empty space.
- Add a breakpoint only if it improves the layout. Use a threshold that gives the content room to change naturally. Relative units such as
remcan be useful for breakpoint values. - Test widths around the threshold. Confirm that the layout remains usable just below and above it, not only at a few preset device sizes.
MDN recommends designing for common and unknown viewport sizes, using flexible layouts, and adding a breakpoint where content begins to work poorly. It also notes that media queries are optional when flexible grids and sizing constraints are sufficient. As MDN puts it: “Media queries can help with RWD, but are not a requirement.” See MDN’s responsive web design guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A simple mobile-first media-query pattern
Keep the narrow layout as the baseline, then add wider arrangements at content-driven minimum widths. This example uses one column until the viewport is wide enough for two:
.cards {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: 1fr;
gap: 1rem;
}
@media (min-width: 48rem) {
.cards {
grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr));
}
}
The 48rem threshold is an example, not a universal recommendation. Choose a value based on when these cards have enough room to read and use comfortably. If a flexible grid already produces a good arrangement at all widths, a media query may be unnecessary.

Breakpoints in a framework are conventions, not device standards
Framework values can help keep a project consistent, but they belong to a particular framework version. For example, Bootstrap 4.0 documents a no-query default below 576px and minimum-width breakpoints at 576px, 768px, 992px, and 1200px. These are Bootstrap 4.0 layout conventions—not mandatory CSS targets or measurements that define phone, tablet, and desktop screens. See the Bootstrap 4.0 layout documentation.
If you use a framework, check the documentation for the version in your project before adopting its values. Otherwise, let the content determine where your own layout changes.

Media queries can test more than width
Use the condition that corresponds to the behavior you want. CSS media queries can test features including height, orientation, aspect ratio, resolution, hover and pointer capability, color scheme, and reduced-motion preference. These features can be more meaningful than assuming that a width identifies a device. The available conditions are described in MDN’s media-query reference.
For example, you might adapt an interaction to pointer capability or provide an alternate presentation when a visitor prefers reduced motion. Treat these as targeted design choices: query an environment or preference when it materially affects the experience.

Check the result at real viewport widths
Test the page as a changing layout, rather than checking only a named device preset. Resize the viewport through and around each breakpoint, and inspect both the browser’s rendered result and any elements that wrap, overflow, or become hard to use. If a layout fails between your chosen test widths, adjust the flexible sizing or the breakpoint instead of adding a device label by guesswork.

For a screenshot of a rendered page, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request alternative. It can capture the page at a chosen viewport, which is useful for checking how a layout appears at a particular width; it does not replace testing the responsive behavior across widths.
