CScale announced a $145 million Series C on September 30, 2026, as it emerged from stealth. The company says it has raised $188 million in total and will use the new funding to develop and commercialize an optical interconnect for AI scale-up. Its central promise is to keep compute running when optical links fail—but the available materials describe a design goal, not a demonstrated result.
What did CScale announce?
CScale’s September 30, 2026 announcement combines a financing disclosure with an initial description of the technology it is developing. The company says it was founded in 2023, is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and has approximately 85 employees globally. Those company details and funding totals are figures reported by CScale, not independently established industry statistics.
| Item | Announcement |
|---|---|
| Series C | $145 million, announced by CScale on September 30, 2026 |
| Total funding | $188 million, as reported by CScale after the round |
| Stated use of proceeds | Accelerate development and commercialization of optical interconnect for AI scale-up |
Who invested?
CScale says the round was “led by Atreides Management, together with Valor Equity Partners,” with Premji Invest joining “as co-lead.” Sutter Hill Ventures and existing investor Maverick Silicon also participated, according to the company. Data Center Dynamics describes Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners, and Premji Invest together as co-leading the round; the descriptions differ in how they characterize the lead structure. CScale identifies NVIDIA and Intel Capital as its first strategic investors. Data Center Dynamics’ September 30, 2026 report also covered the funding and investors.
What is optical interconnect, and what is CScale building?
An optical interconnect uses light to carry data between components. CScale describes its target as high-bandwidth, ultra-low-latency connections that let AI accelerators work together as a larger system. It says it is developing an integrated light engine for optical connectivity in AI infrastructure.

The scale-up problem CScale is aiming at is communication within a tightly coupled group of accelerators. In the company’s forecast, gigawatt-class AI data centers expected by the end of the decade could have a single scale-up domain linking thousands of accelerators across dozens of racks. CScale says those systems will require high bandwidth, predictable low latency, and continuous communication. This is a scenario in the company’s announcement, not evidence that CScale currently serves such a system.
How does CScale plan to keep AI compute running when optical links fail?
CScale’s thesis is that even if failures on an individual link are rare, a very large system contains so many links that failures can become a recurring operational concern. The company says its architecture is intended to contain optical failures without interrupting compute. It has not disclosed a measured link-failure rate or published reliability results that establish how well the approach works.

CEO Martin Lund framed the goal this way: “We’re designing the interconnect for continuity. Lasers will fail. Compute shouldn’t.” The statement captures CScale’s positioning, rather than proof that its design has achieved uninterrupted operation. The company’s homepage similarly describes its objective as containing optical failures so compute keeps running.
Continuity is different from serviceability
Replacing a failed component more easily is a serviceability benefit. CScale says it is designing for continuity: limiting the effect of a failed optical component so compute can continue. That distinction matters in large AI systems, where recovery from a fault may matter alongside the ability to repair the hardware. The announcement does not provide architecture details explaining how failure containment would work in practice.

What is known—and what remains undisclosed?
CScale has outlined a product concept and its reliability objective, but the announcement is not a technical product specification. Data Center Dynamics noted that few technical details had been made public. The available materials do not identify confirmed customer deployments, measured reliability outcomes, a commercial availability date, or pricing.
- Disclosed: an integrated light engine and optical interconnect aimed at AI scale-up, alongside a stated goal of containing optical failures without stopping compute.
- Not disclosed in the reviewed materials: detailed architecture, product specifications, pricing, confirmed customer deployments, and measured reliability results.
That leaves an important distinction for readers: the funding and the company’s intended direction are public, while the performance and deployment evidence needed to assess the product in operation are not.

Why the announcement matters
CScale is betting that as AI systems expand across racks, networking reliability will be a system-level concern rather than just a matter of individual component replacement. The financing gives the company capital to pursue that bet, and strategic investors NVIDIA and Intel Capital signal interest from established technology companies. Neither the round nor the investor list, on its own, demonstrates that the proposed design is technically effective or commercially available.
CScale’s CEO Martin Lund has held leadership roles at Broadcom, Microsoft, Cadence, and Cisco, according to the company, which says he most recently led Cisco’s Common Hardware Group, including silicon, hardware systems, optics, and Silicon One. The company also identifies founder and CTO Sanjai Kohli as a communications entrepreneur who founded SiRF and whose later company Inovi was acquired by Facebook in 2014; it says he received the 2010 European Inventor Award.
