A crypto promo code or signup bonus is not a promise of instantly spendable money. The offer’s terms determine who qualifies, what action counts, when a reward is credited, whether funds must remain in the account, and what could trigger a reduction or clawback. Read those conditions before depositing, trading, or referring anyone.

Start with the action the offer actually requires

Labels such as “promo code,” “new user incentive,” “referral bonus,” and “deposit match” describe a promotion, not its eligibility rules. An offer may require a new account, identity verification, enrollment, a qualifying purchase, trading activity, a maintained deposit, or actions by both the referrer and the referred user. Check the specific offer page for the trigger and any exclusions before acting.

For example, a Coinbase U.S. campaign page accessed October 4, 2026, titled “Buy $50 Crypto, Get Bitcoin,” specified a single first purchase of at least US$50; it said multiple smaller purchases adding up to US$50 did not qualify for that offer. That is a campaign-specific rule, not a general definition of a qualifying purchase. Coinbase’s offer terms control the details for that campaign.

A separate Kraken U.S. campaign required at least US$100 in qualifying spot trades. Its rules excluded futures, margin, staking, and certain other activity. That promotion ended December 4, 2025, so it is an example of how qualifying activity can be narrowly defined—not evidence that the offer remains available. Kraken’s campaign rules specify the exclusions.

Check eligibility, location, and account restrictions

Before completing any qualifying action, confirm that the offer applies to your country, customer type, and account. Terms may require a new consumer account, completed identity checks, an enrollment step, or a particular account status. They may also limit participation to one reward per person or account, or exclude users who have taken part in another promotion.

Coinbase states: “Eligibility and terms vary by region, customer and campaign.” A page visible online may not be available to you, and an indexed or dated campaign page does not establish that an offer is currently active. Coinbase’s Funding Bonus Programme information describes that variation.

Know whether a deposit must stay in the account

A deposit amount and the amount that counts toward a promotion can differ. Coinbase explains its calculation this way: “Your qualifying deposit is measured on a net basis: withdrawals or outbound transfers made during the qualification period reduce the amount treated as a qualifying deposit.” In other words, money sent back out during the window may lower your qualifying net balance even if you initially deposited enough. Coinbase also says a qualifying balance may need to be maintained through the qualification period; withdrawing or transferring funds can cause a reward to be withheld, denied, revoked, or recovered under the applicable terms. Read Coinbase’s new-user incentive terms for the offer-specific conditions.

Kraken’s deposit-match FAQ likewise describes a reward hold and a possible chargeback if withdrawals take the portfolio below the required qualifying net-deposit level. Its campaign FAQ asks, “What happens to my deposits after the promotion period ends?” and “What happens if I withdraw funds?” Those are useful questions to answer from the terms before depositing; the answer depends on that particular promotion. Kraken’s deposit-match FAQ explains its campaign mechanics.

Separate the reward amount from its value and availability

Find out whether the advertised reward is cash, a fixed amount of cryptocurrency, a variable amount, or a crypto reward described in a dollar equivalent. If it is cryptocurrency, its market value can change after credit. Coinbase specifically warns that a digital-asset reward may rise or fall in value after it is credited. The advertised value, the asset actually received, the time used to value it, and its later market price are not necessarily the same thing.

For one U.S. Coinbase campaign page accessed October 4, 2026, the listed Bitcoin reward was randomized from US$10 to US$2,000; the page said 99% of users receive US$10–US$100 and 1% receive US$1,000 or US$2,000. Those figures describe that campaign’s terms only. They are not typical bonus amounts across exchanges, and the page is not proof of a currently available offer. The campaign terms contain the details.

Also distinguish a reward being “credited” from being withdrawable. Coinbase describes rewards that may be held or released in installments, and its help information says held bonus funds cannot be withdrawn or sent off-platform until released. Check the applicable campaign rules to learn whether the restriction covers only the reward or also affects deposited funds, and when any release occurs. Coinbase’s funding-bonus calculation help addresses how bonuses are calculated; its programme information describes offer variation.

Put every deadline on a timeline

Promotions can have several separate clocks. Identify the enrollment deadline, the period in which you must complete the qualifying action, the time needed to verify eligibility, the reward-credit delay, and any later holding or release schedule. A deadline to make a purchase is not necessarily the date a reward becomes available.

Coinbase’s incentive information gives an approximate 45-day crediting period after qualification unless an offer specifies otherwise. A Kraken campaign that ended December 4, 2025, stated that eligible rewards would be credited within 14 business days after eligibility and qualifying trades were verified. Both timings belong to their respective terms, not to crypto promotions generally. Coinbase’s incentive terms and Kraken’s dated rules provide the respective details.

Compare offers by the terms that affect your funds

What to compare What to establish
Qualification Whether the offer requires a new account, verification, enrollment, a single purchase, accumulated volume, a deposit, a trade, or referral activity.
Net amount Whether withdrawals or outbound transfers during the qualification period reduce the qualifying balance.
Reward form and valuation Which asset or currency you receive, whether the amount is fixed or variable, and when its value is determined.
Timing Offer deadline, qualification window, crediting delay, holding period, and any installment schedule.
Liquidity When deposited funds and reward funds may be withdrawn, transferred, or sent off-platform.
Clawback Which withdrawals, balance drops, or other actions could reduce, deny, revoke, or recover a reward.
Eligibility Country or region, customer and account type, verification requirements, and exclusions.
Controlling terms Which offer-specific rules apply if a general help page or account agreement says something different.

Save the terms that apply when you enroll

Before taking the qualifying action, read the campaign-specific rules and any linked account terms. Coinbase says its offer-specific terms govern if they conflict with the referenced incentive page. Save a dated copy or screenshot of the offer and its conditions so you can refer to the same wording later. Check the live official page again before acting: promotions can change, end, or be limited, and an old example does not establish availability today.
