Crypto jobs and traditional tech jobs overlap in engineering, product, data, security, operations, and marketing. The evidence does not show that one sector reliably pays more: available wage figures cover different occupations and labor markets, while crypto reports mainly track job postings. A clearer comparison is role mix, offer structure, hiring volatility, and the specific employer’s prospects.

What counts as a crypto job—and what is traditional tech?

Crypto companies hire for familiar technology functions as well as work tied to blockchain networks and digital-asset products. Depending on the employer, roles may include software and infrastructure engineering, product, data, security, design, operations, marketing, management, compliance and legal work, exchange or stablecoin operations, on-chain risk, finance, community and ecosystem work, and mining or self-custody products. Not every company has all these teams, and crypto work is not inherently more technical.

Traditional tech is not limited to coding either. For one defined U.S. occupational family, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes software developers as designing applications or programs and quality-assurance analysts and testers as identifying problems and reporting defects. Typical entry is a bachelor’s degree in computer or information technology or a related field, although some employers prefer a master’s degree. These roles illustrate one part of the conventional tech labor market, not all of it. BLS: Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers

How does the role mix compare?

Two recent posting datasets illustrate why the answer depends on what is counted. Bitvocation’s 2025 report covered 1,801 postings from companies meeting its Bitcoin-specific criteria: Bitcoin-only products, a publicly stated Bitcoin-first commitment, and contribution to the Bitcoin ecosystem. In that sample, 74% of postings were for non-developer roles. Frequent examples included Product Manager, Executive Assistant, and Marketing Manager; common developer titles included Senior Software Engineer, Software Engineer, Frontend Engineer, and Full Stack Developer. The report says 68% of its data sources were company pages and 27% came from a Bitcoin job board. This is not a census of all crypto, Web3, or fintech employers. CoinGecko and Tiger Research’s H1 2026 analysis used a different sample: 2,932 active postings collected through June 18, 2026, from crypto job sites, company career pages, and Korean platforms. Engineering accounted for 34.1% of those postings and compliance/legal for 10.4%. The report describes greater emphasis on infrastructure operations and regulatory compliance. Its sample is manually collected and proprietary; it excludes DAO contributor roles, freelance work, and contractor arrangements. CoinGecko and Tiger Research: Crypto Hiring Trends H1 2026

Taken together, the samples show that crypto hiring can include substantial non-engineering work, while engineering remains prominent in a broader multi-source snapshot. Their methods and coverage differ, so the percentages should not be treated as a direct trend comparison.

Do crypto jobs pay more than tech jobs?

The available figures do not establish a matched sector winner. The strongest U.S. conventional benchmark here is the BLS median annual wage for software developers: $133,080 in May 2024. The same BLS profile reports $102,610 for software quality-assurance analysts and testers. These are occupation-wide U.S. wage statistics, not salaries at technology companies and not a crypto-versus-traditional comparison. BLS defines the median as the point where half of workers in the occupation earned more and half earned less. BLS: Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers

A separate UK comparator helps show why geography and occupation matter. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology reported a £55,000 median salary for core cyber-security jobs in 2024, compared with £48,900 for wider IT in its comparison. The report says the cyber median was 12% higher, but three-quarters of core cyber postings did not publish salary information. Neither the CoinGecko/Tiger Research report nor Bitvocation’s 2025 report supplies role-level salary distributions that can be matched to those government figures. A fair comparison would hold role, seniority, geography, reference date, and compensation definition constant. Without that match, claims that crypto categorically pays more—or less—are not supported by these figures.

How to compare an actual offer

Separate guaranteed cash from variable or non-cash compensation before comparing headline totals. For any bonus, equity, or tokens, check the written terms rather than assuming a quoted value will be realized.

  • Record base salary and any guaranteed cash separately from discretionary bonus.
  • For equity or tokens, check vesting dates, lockups, transfer restrictions, liquidity, and dilution.
  • Read what happens to unvested compensation if employment ends, and when any payment is due.
  • Confirm tax treatment with a qualified adviser for your jurisdiction; it can depend on the asset and the timing of vesting or sale.

Are crypto jobs riskier?

There is evidence of crypto hiring volatility, but it does not prove that every crypto job is less secure than every traditional tech job. CoinGecko/Tiger Research reports that new crypto job postings on major job boards fell roughly 80% year over year in January 2026 and describes restructuring announcements during the first half of 2026. Those findings refer to the report’s posting sample and market snapshot, not a long-term forecast or a guarantee about an individual employer.

For comparison, BLS projects 15% growth from 2024 to 2034 for the combined U.S. group of software developers, QA analysts, and testers, with about 129,200 openings per year over that decade. This is an occupational projection, not a forecast for every technology company; it does not remove the possibility of employer-specific layoffs, funding problems, or shifts in demand. For either sector, assess the specific employer rather than relying on the sector label. Ask how the role is funded, what the team’s goals are, how the company earns revenue, and what the reporting line and career path look like. In crypto, also ask whether the work depends on a particular token, network, or regulatory environment. These are due-diligence questions, not claims that all crypto employers share the same risks.

How should you compare remote work and location?

Remote shares vary by dataset and geography. Bitvocation found that 45% of its Bitcoin postings—809 of 1,801—in 2025 were advertised as remote. The UK cyber report found 26% of 2024 core cyber-security postings marked remote or UK-wide. Neither figure describes all crypto jobs or all traditional tech jobs worldwide. Bitvocation: 2025 Bitcoin Job Market Report UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology: Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market 2025

Before accepting an offer described as remote, confirm which countries or regions the employer can hire in, whether time-zone overlap is required, whether residency limits apply, and how often office attendance is expected. Check benefits and employment status as well: a remote employee role and a contract arrangement may differ in protections and terms.

Which path fits your priorities?

Compare roles and offers on the same practical dimensions rather than assuming the industry name predicts the outcome:

  • Role and transferable skills: Identify the work you will actually do and whether the skills—such as engineering, product, security, compliance, or marketing—transfer to employers outside the sector.
  • Compensation certainty: Compare guaranteed cash first, then assess bonus, equity, or tokens using their written vesting, liquidity, and termination terms.
  • Employer resilience: Examine revenue, funding, runway, and dependence on market cycles or a particular product. Sector-wide posting data cannot tell you an individual company’s runway.
  • Regulatory exposure: For roles involving digital assets, exchanges, or financial products, clarify which rules and jurisdictions affect the team’s work.
  • Progression: Ask what success looks like, who will mentor you, and whether there is a realistic next role or broader scope.
  • Location and benefits: Verify hiring geography, time-zone expectations, employment status, leave, health coverage, and other benefits in the offer.
