The Crucial P510 is a mainstream PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD built around Phison’s DRAM-less E31T controller and Micron TLC NAND. Its design aims to bring Gen5 throughput to a more affordable, power-conscious drive, rather than match the highest-end SSDs on every measure. It makes the most sense in a PCIe 5.0 system when fast transfers, sustained-write behavior, or the 2TB model’s single-sided layout matter to you.
What makes the Crucial P510 different?
The P510 combines a Phison E31T controller with Micron 276-layer TLC NAND in an M.2 2280 drive. It has no dedicated onboard DRAM: instead, it uses host memory buffer (HMB), which lets the SSD use a portion of system memory for mapping data. This helps reduce cost and power draw, but places the P510 below premium Gen5 drives that include their own DRAM.
Phison identifies the controller as the PS5031-E31T and describes it as a DRAM-less PCIe Gen5 design intended to exceed 10 GB/s while emphasizing efficiency and cost. Micron said the P510 uses 25% less power than its previous Crucial Gen5 SSDs; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent power measurement. Phison’s E31T description and HotHardware’s January 7, 2025 launch coverage provide the company statements.

Specifications and warranty figures are those listed in Tom’s Hardware’s P510 review. The sequential ratings are maximum specifications, not a guarantee that every workload or computer will reach those speeds. HotHardware reported Micron’s launch claim of up to 11,000 MB/s read and 9,550 MB/s write; Tom’s Hardware lists the 1TB model’s rated write speed as 9,500 MB/s.

How fast is the P510, especially the 2TB model?
The 2TB model is rated for sequential reads up to 10,000 MB/s and writes up to 8,700 MB/s, with random read and write performance listed at 1,500K IOPS. Those figures describe rated performance; real results depend on the workload, system, and operating conditions. Tom’s Hardware describes the P510 as delivering consistent sustained performance and calls out its sustained writes as a strength, but the listed specifications alone do not establish a specific speed for every long-running transfer.
The 1TB model has higher stated sequential ratings than the 2TB version: 11,000 MB/s read and 9,500 MB/s write versus 10,000 MB/s and 8,700 MB/s. Both are rated at the same random IOPS figure. Choose based on capacity, price, and your workload rather than assuming the larger model is faster in every category.

Will it work in a PCIe 4.0 computer?
Yes. The P510 is compatible with PCIe 4.0 systems, but it cannot deliver its PCIe 5.0 interface advantage in a Gen4-only slot. If your computer has only PCIe 4.0 storage support, compare the P510’s total price with a capable Gen4 SSD; Tom’s Hardware notes that a less expensive Gen4 drive may offer better value there.
For the P510’s Gen5 performance, the computer needs a compatible PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot. Check the motherboard or laptop specifications for the slot’s PCIe generation and lane configuration before buying.

When is the Crucial P510 worth buying?
Consider it for a PCIe 5.0 system
- You want high rated sequential throughput without choosing a premium, DRAM-equipped Gen5 SSD.
- You care about the review’s favorable assessment of sustained-write consistency.
- You want a 2TB drive whose single-sided layout may suit some laptop installations. Confirm your device’s size and clearance requirements before purchase.
Compare alternatives in these cases
- Your system is PCIe 4.0-only and a Gen4 SSD costs less while meeting your needs.
- Your workload or platform specifically benefits from onboard DRAM; the P510 uses HMB instead.
- You need a capacity beyond the 1TB and 2TB models covered by the review.
What did the P510 cost at launch?
Tom’s Hardware recorded 2025 starting prices of $99.99 for 1TB and $179.99 for 2TB. These are dated launch prices, not current quotes. Compare the current street price for the capacity you want against Gen4 and other Gen5 options before deciding.
