Neither a CRT nor a modern TV is the universal best choice for retro gaming. A CRT gives games the motion and image character of an older display; a modern TV is easier to use on a large screen, but an original console’s low-resolution analog signal may need careful handling. The right choice depends on the console’s video output, the TV’s ability to process that signal, input lag, your motion and image preferences, and whether you are willing to use an upscaler.
Start with the console’s video signal
Before comparing screens, identify what your console actually outputs: composite, S-Video, component, RGB/SCART, or HDMI. Then check whether the particular TV accepts that signal and supports its resolution and scan format. A matching connector is not enough to establish that the TV will display the console’s signal correctly.
This matters especially with many original consoles that output 240p. A modern TV might accept the signal but process or scale it poorly, so “it displays a picture” does not necessarily mean the result looks right or responds well. An HD Retrovision compatibility list dated December 11, 2017, distinguishes 240p compatibility from processing and includes models that accept 240p but fail its processing check. It demonstrates model-to-model variation, not how newer TVs perform today: HD Retrovision’s 240p TV compatibility list.
Understand input lag as a whole-system issue
Input lag is not just a property of the TV. RTINGS describes its TV input-lag measurement as including the time to acquire the source, process the image, and display it. The console, controller, and any converter or upscaler also contribute to the experience. RTINGS identifies scaling and motion interpolation as examples of video processing that can affect the chain: RTINGS’ explanation of TV input-lag testing.

Enable Game Mode first
RTINGS says, “The Game Mode setting is the most important setting to ensure you get the lowest input lag possible.” On a modern TV, start there and disable motion interpolation if minimizing lag is the priority. Then check whether the chosen input or signal path still applies processing that affects the picture or response.
Use measurements only for the test conditions they describe
RTINGS gives under 15 ms as a “good value” in its 1080p-at-60-Hz and 4K-at-60-Hz tests, and under 10 ms in its 1080p-at-120-Hz and 4K-at-120-Hz tests. These are reference points for RTINGS’ test conditions—not measurements of every retro console setup, a promise about a particular TV, or proof of a universal CRT-versus-LCD latency gap. Compare measurements for the relevant signal and refresh rate, with Game Mode active, rather than treating one number as the full setup’s lag.

Choose the motion and image character you prefer
CRTs and modern fixed-pixel displays present motion differently. RTINGS explains that CRT and plasma displays have shorter hold time, which can make motion appear closer to an ideal motion line. That approach comes with trade-offs including flicker and lower brightness. LCD and OLED use sample-and-hold behavior, which can reduce flicker and support greater brightness, but can make stutter more noticeable; LCD response time can add blur. See RTINGS’ explanation of motion cadence and display behavior.
Appearance is not only about motion. A CRT’s softness, geometry, and scanline character may be part of the experience a player wants; a modern TV presents the image on a fixed-pixel screen and may look quite different. Some modern TVs offer black-frame insertion (BFI), which can reduce persistence blur by inserting black frames or flickering the backlight, depending on panel type. The effect varies, and RTINGS notes trade-offs such as reduced brightness and image duplication. A BFI setting is not automatically a good match for every retro game: RTINGS’ BFI testing overview.

For an original console on an HDTV, consider an upscaler
If a direct connection is unavailable or the TV handles the signal poorly, a purpose-built retro gaming upscaler is one possible bridge between an older console and an HDTV. An iTechGuides review describes the RetroTINK 5X Pro as accepting composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART, including 240p and 480i input, and outputting digital video for HDTV use: iTechGuides’ overview of CRT and modern-TV options for retro gaming. Check current specifications and compatibility for your console before buying; an upscaler is a possible setup path, not a universal requirement.

| You want CRT motion and image character, and can find a working set with suitable inputs. | You want a practical large-screen setup and can confirm that the signal path works acceptably. |
| You accept that size, weight, age, condition, and available inputs vary by set. | You are prepared to check Game Mode, processing, and 240p handling—and use conversion hardware if needed. |
If you play through emulation or a modern console with HDMI output, much of the original-console analog compatibility problem may not apply. The decision then centers more on lag, motion, image style, and convenience. For an original console, verify the exact console output and TV model/input behavior before settling on a connection; connector presence alone cannot tell you how the image will be processed.
