The quickest way to tell them apart is to ask what each label describes: creepypasta is internet horror folklore that spreads online, Reddit horror is horror shared in a platform or community context, and analog horror is horror told through audiovisual media that imitates analog recordings or broadcasts. They can overlap because one describes circulation, another venue and reader conventions, and the third presentation.
How the three labels differ
| Term | What it mainly describes | Common form or mechanism | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creepypasta | An online horror-story and folklore tradition | Stories, images, or legends copied, reposted, adapted, or discussed online | A frightening narrative travels through online communities, sometimes with uncertain or obscured authorship |
| Reddit horror | A platform and community context | Posts, comments, subreddit conventions, or serialized fiction | The subreddit and the way readers are expected to engage with the post may shape the experience |
| Analog horror | An audiovisual mode and aesthetic | Videos that evoke television broadcasts, VHS recordings, CRT displays, public warnings, or archival footage | The fictional recording or broadcast is part of how the story is delivered, not just a retro visual filter |
These are practical distinctions, not mutually exclusive genre rules. A story may be creepypasta because it circulates as online folklore, Reddit horror because it is posted and read within a Reddit community, and analog horror if it is also presented as a fictional broadcast or recording.
What creepypasta means
The word creepypasta comes from copypasta, the copying and pasting of text across online spaces. The term became associated with horror stories and legends that spread through message boards and other online communities. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia traces the term and discusses early examples and the later importance of Reddit’s NoSleep: SFE: Creepypasta.
Circulation is part of the idea. Some creepypastas are repeatedly copied or adapted, and their authorship may be unclear. Others are original horror written for online audiences rather than texts literally passed around unchanged. Academic work on digital horror and folklore examines how circulation, authorship, hoaxes, and audience belief intersect; see “In the Dark: The Afterlife of a Horror Hoax” and Jessica Balanzategui’s study of creepypasta, “Candle Cove,” and the digital gothic.

So, “creepypasta” does not mean every scary thing found on the internet. It points to a folklore-like mode of horror whose online spread, retelling, discussion, or uncertain provenance matters to how people encounter it. Creepypasta.com offers an accessible account of stories passed among forums and sites, as well as a first-party history of its own website: Creepypasta.com FAQ.
What Reddit horror means
Reddit horror is a broad label for horror shared on Reddit; it is not one platform-wide genre with a single set of rules. Subreddits can differ in format, tone, and how directly they invite readers to participate. Reddit also functions as a social-sharing environment, as discussed in this study of creepypasta sharing on Reddit.
Why r/nosleep is a distinctive example
r/nosleep is known for an in-fiction convention in which stories are treated as true within the community’s frame. First-person narration and reader responses can make the experience feel like an exchange with someone recounting real events. Research on collaborative digital horror describes this “as if true” convention and the role of reader interaction: “The Minotaur–Maze Problem in Collaborative Digital Horror Storytelling”.
That convention is a storytelling device, not evidence that a story’s events happened. It also applies to a particular community practice, not to everything posted under the broad label “Reddit horror.” The Science Fiction Encyclopedia dates NoSleep’s creation to 2010; that is the board’s date, not the beginning of horror on Reddit or online: SFE: Creepypasta.

Analog horror foregrounds audiovisual presentation. Creators imitate or evoke analog-era media—such as television broadcasts, VHS tapes, CRT displays, public-service announcements, or archival recordings—to make a fictional artifact feel like the vehicle carrying the story.
A VHS effect by itself is not a complete definition. The key question is whether the imagined recording or broadcast helps deliver the narrative or create its atmosphere. If a video simply has grain and distortion but those devices have no meaningful role in how the story is told, calling it analog horror may be less useful. Academic discussion places the form within internet horror and examines works such as The Mandela Catalogue, including this Georgia Tech thesis on analog horror and the internet.
Rank #4
There is no definitive origin claim established here that settles which work was the first analog horror. It is safer to describe the form by its storytelling features than to treat a fan chronology as settled history.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to classify a horror story that fits more than one label
- Ask what is being described. If the focus is how a frightening story spreads, is retold, or becomes folklore online, “creepypasta” may fit.
- Identify the venue and convention. If the focus is that a story appears on Reddit, name the subreddit when its rules or role-play matter. “Reddit horror” alone does not tell you that every post follows NoSleep’s convention.
- Look at the delivery format. If an audiovisual work uses a fictional broadcast, recording, or archival artifact as part of its storytelling, “analog horror” may fit.
- Use more than one label when each adds information. A Reddit post can circulate as creepypasta; a creepypasta can be adapted into an analog-horror video; an analog-horror series can draw on internet folklore.
These labels answer different questions rather than competing for one exclusive category. That is why “Is this creepypasta or analog horror?” may have a both-and answer, while “Is it Reddit horror?” may simply identify where and under what community convention readers encountered it.

What can be said about their history
- Creepypasta: The term derives from “copypasta”; the Science Fiction Encyclopedia places its use in 2007-era message-board culture. Creepypasta.com says its site launched in 2008, which documents that site’s history rather than proving it invented the form. Sources: SFE and Creepypasta.com FAQ.
- NoSleep: The Science Fiction Encyclopedia reports that the subreddit was created in 2010. This dates that community, not Reddit horror as a whole. Source: SFE.
- Analog horror: Scholarship connects the form to internet horror and discusses The Mandela Catalogue, but the available evidence does not settle a definitive first work. Source: Georgia Tech thesis.
