Short answer: Crawlers uses a real historical possibility as horror metaphor. Psychologist Graham C. L. Davey argued that European disease memories helped make spiders “disgust-relevant,” but no study proves that the Black Death created an unbroken, inherited fear lasting to 2026. Spiders did not spread the plague; black rats and their fleas did.

What Crawlers is actually claiming

VVS Films lists Crawlers, directed by Ángel Gómez Hernández, for cinemas on 29 October 2026. Its official synopsis describes “a catastrophic infestation of venomous and deadly spiders” that sends an apartment building into lockdown. That is the film’s documented premise. It does not establish that the story is a dramatization of a particular medieval event or that its spiders reproduce a known plague mechanism.

The Black Death connection comes from the film’s larger idea: a modern infestation can reactivate an old European fear of contamination, invisible danger and social collapse. The title’s “675 years of inherited fear” is therefore best read as a dramatic thesis. It links a 14th-century catastrophe with a 2026 horror release, while the psychology behind spider fear remains a combination of cultural learning, attention biases and family influence.

Where the 675-year number comes from

The main European mortality wave of the Black Death is conventionally dated to 1347–1351. Counting from that period to the film’s 2026 release produces roughly 675 to 679 years, depending on whether the calculation starts in 1351, 1347 or another endpoint. The arithmetic explains the headline, not a measured biological timeline.

No cited study demonstrates an unbroken chain in which a fear formed during the Black Death was transmitted intact through every European generation. Cultural memories can be retold, symbols can persist and families can teach avoidance, but those processes are not the same as proving a specific fear was inherited for six and three-quarter centuries. A precise reading is: the film echoes a long cultural history, while the duration is an evocative interval rather than an established mechanism.

Davey’s historical explanation for spider disgust

Graham C. L. Davey’s 1994 “disgusting spider” argument is the strongest scholarly foundation for the film’s historical metaphor. Davey proposed that, from about the tenth century onward, European associations between spiders, illness and contamination helped give spiders a “disgust-relevant status.” Medieval observers could treat spiders as signs of an approaching epidemic or as threats that polluted their surroundings.

In that account, a spider was a visible, available object onto which people could project fear of an unseen disease. The association did not require spiders to be the cause of an illness. During epidemics, people look for signs, carriers and boundaries between clean and contaminated spaces. A creature found in dark corners, near waste or in neglected buildings could become a compelling symbol of that danger even when the biology was misunderstood.

Davey’s point is about cultural meaning, not a claim that every medieval person feared spiders in the same way. He also cited societies in Africa and elsewhere where spiders may be respected or treated as useful rather than disgusting. That variation matters: if spider fear were a single, universal instinct, its emotional meaning would be much more consistent across cultures.

Spiders were not the biological cause of the Black Death

The historical distinction is essential. The black rat carried the fleas that spread plague; spiders were not the proven vector. As Davey wrote in 1994: “It was in fact the black rat that carried the fleas which spread the plague, but this was not established until the nineteenth century.”

Before modern bacteriology and epidemiology, people lacked a reliable way to identify an invisible pathogen or trace transmission through flea bites. A spider could therefore be blamed symbolically without being responsible biologically. Confusing those two roles creates a false history. Crawlers can use the spider as a metaphor for contamination and helplessness, but the metaphor should not be presented as evidence that spiders caused the medieval plague.

Question What the evidence supports What it does not support
Who spread plague? Black rats and their fleas are the historically established transmission route described by Davey. That spiders transmitted the Black Death.
Why could spiders become associated with disease? They were visible creatures onto which contamination fears and epidemic symbolism could be projected. A universal biological trigger shared identically by all humans.
What does the film use? A venomous-spider infestation and lockdown as a modern horror image of uncontrolled threat. A documented retelling of a specific medieval outbreak.

Is arachnophobia genetic, learned or both?

The evidence does not support a single-cause answer. Three explanations are relevant, and they can operate together.

Cultural disease-avoidance

Davey’s hypothesis places epidemic memories, contamination beliefs and social learning at the center. Children and adults learn what their community labels dirty, dangerous or unlucky. Stories about illness, household hygiene and threatening animals can make a spider feel disgusting before anyone has experienced a bite. In this model, the Black Death is a possible historical layer in European symbolism, not a demonstrated genetic switch.

Evolutionary preparedness

Research in evolutionary psychology has explored whether people detect spider-like shapes rapidly or direct attention toward them. A bias to notice a potentially dangerous form could have survival value, but noticing is not the same as developing a phobia. Preparedness research also cannot identify the Black Death as the cause of modern arachnophobia. It addresses attention and threat detection across humans, whereas Davey’s argument addresses the particular meanings European societies attached to spiders.

Family learning and disgust

Davey, Forster and Mayhew’s 1993 work found that parental disgust sensitivity predicted offspring animal fear, including fear of spiders. That pattern is consistent with social transmission: a child can observe a parent recoil, hear warnings or learn avoidance routines. It may also reflect biological traits that families share. The finding supports interaction between development and temperament, not a simple “fear gene.”

Explanation Main mechanism Limit
Cultural history Epidemic memories and contamination symbolism make spiders socially meaningful threats. Does not prove an unbroken 675-year inheritance.
Evolutionary preparedness Attention may be biased toward spider-like forms or rapid movement. Does not explain why cultures differ or why attention becomes clinical phobia.
Development and family Parental disgust, modeling and individual sensitivity shape learned fear. Correlation does not separate imitation from inherited temperament.

The careful conclusion is interaction. Cultural history can supply the meaning, preparedness can make the shape salient and family learning can turn a reaction into avoidance. Current evidence does not rank one process as the sole origin of all spider fear.

Measure Reported figure How to interpret it
Clinically significant or specific fear About 2.7%–6.1% of the general population (PLOS One, 2021) An estimate for substantial fear or phobia, not the percentage of people who simply dislike spiders.
Self-reported reaction to a spider Roughly 30% of women and 20% of men reported being anxious, nervous or frightened in a UK animal-fear study (Davey et al., 1994, as summarized in later research) A reaction survey; it is not a diagnosis of arachnophobia.

A person can dislike spiders, feel a brief jolt when one appears or avoid touching one without meeting the threshold for a specific phobia. A diagnosable phobia involves persistent, disproportionate fear and meaningful interference with ordinary life; prevalence estimates aimed at that condition should not be applied to everyone who finds spiders unpleasant.

Why the fear is not universal

Davey’s cross-cultural examples challenge the idea that arachnophobia is an instinct expressed identically everywhere. In some communities, spiders are respected, useful or connected with positive stories. People’s responses depend on local species, personal encounters, religious and folklore traditions, household practices and what parents model.

That does not rule out shared human attention biases. A rapidly moving, legged animal can attract notice in many settings, while its emotional meaning is supplied by experience and culture. The combination explains why one person sees a harmless house spider, another sees a contamination threat and a third sees an animal worth protecting.

Is Crawlers based on real history?

It is inspired by a real historical question, not documented as a historical reconstruction. The real elements are the Black Death’s 14th-century European mortality wave, the later recognition that rats and fleas spread plague, and Davey’s 1994 proposal that disease associations helped make spiders disgusting in European culture.

The fictional element is the apartment lockdown caused by “venomous and deadly spiders,” as stated in VVS Films’ synopsis. Nothing in the available film description establishes that such an infestation occurred during the Black Death, that modern arachnophobia descends in a measurable line from medieval survivors, or that the film follows a real family or outbreak.

Calling the film a metaphor is more accurate than calling it a history lesson. Horror compresses centuries of uncertainty into one building: residents cannot see the full threat, cannot trust familiar spaces and must decide whether ordinary walls still protect them. The spider becomes a visible shape for an invisible enemy.

How to read the film’s “inherited fear” idea

  1. Separate chronology from causation. The 675–679-year interval is a calculation from the Black Death era to 2026. It is not proof that fear was biologically transmitted across that period.
  2. Separate symbolism from epidemiology. Medieval people could associate spiders with disease without spiders spreading plague.
  3. Separate attention from phobia. Quickly noticing a spider-like shape may be a preparedness effect; disabling fear requires a different psychological explanation.
  4. Allow culture to vary. Evidence that some communities respect spiders means a European disgust tradition cannot be treated as a species-wide rule.
  5. Use “interaction” as the working model. Historical stories, family behavior, individual temperament and attention biases can reinforce one another.

This framework preserves what makes the premise compelling without turning a plausible cultural-history hypothesis into a settled scientific fact.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

  • Established historical distinction: black rats and their fleas, not spiders, were the relevant plague carriers described in the cited account.
  • Plausible cultural mechanism: epidemic memories and contamination beliefs may have made spiders especially disgusting or threatening in parts of Europe.
  • Active psychological question: preparedness, family modeling and disgust sensitivity may all contribute to spider fear.
  • Important qualification: cross-cultural variation weakens any claim that arachnophobia is one universal inherited instinct.
  • Film-specific fact: Crawlers is announced for cinemas on 29 October 2026, with a lockdown premise involving venomous and deadly spiders.

The strongest interpretation is therefore neither “the Black Death caused arachnophobia” nor “history has nothing to do with spider fear.” Davey’s proposal gives the film a credible cultural layer, while evolutionary and developmental research explains why fear can persist, vary and intensify in individuals.
