Monitor both the CPU and GPU if you want to understand your PC’s overall thermals. There is no universal temperature at which every CPU or GPU is safe or unsafe: compare each reading with the limit for that exact component, and watch for thermal throttling or performance loss under the workload that matters to you.

Why CPU and GPU temperatures are not directly comparable

A CPU temperature and a GPU temperature may both be shown in Celsius, but their numbers do not share one universal safe threshold. Intel says processor maximum operating temperatures vary by product; NVIDIA likewise says the maximum specified GPU temperature varies by GPU. Check each component’s own specification rather than deciding that one should always run cooler than the other.

Temperature also depends on the task and system: workload, cooling, airflow, ambient temperature, settings, and computer design all affect what a sensor reports. Intel notes that normal operation can bring a CPU to its maximum temperature, making temperature alone an unreliable diagnosis of a problem (Intel CPU temperature guidance). AMD similarly describes CPU temperature as dependent on the cooler, airflow, ambient temperature, settings, and workload (AMD CPU temperature FAQ).

Which component should you monitor first?

Monitor both, then prioritize the component that is closest to its own model-specific limit or reports thermal throttling during the activity you care about. For a game, observe both CPU and GPU while playing; for rendering or compute work, monitor them during that workload. Compare idle readings with idle readings and like-for-like workloads with the same workloads. This is a practical way to interpret readings, not a standardized benchmark protocol.

  • USB-Powered Secondary Display: Enjoy plug-and-play connection via a 9-pin port or Type-A USB. This innovative design allows the 8.8" screen to function independently as a secondary monitor, displaying hardware stats, media, or custom visuals without using valuable GPU ports.
  • Flexible Mounting Options: Versatile mounting bracket that supports height and tilt adjustments. Mount it securely to fan frames, attach it to case panels, or use adhesive pads for flat surfaces, ensuring optimal visibility from any angle.
  • Stunning Diffused ARGB Lighting: Enhance your build's aesthetics with a built-in diffused ARGB lighting strip. Fully customizable through L-Connect 3, the lighting offers a spectrum of colors and effects, allowing synchronization with your entire system for a cohesive look.
  • Near a documented limit: investigate that component using its exact product specification.
  • Throttling or performance loss: treat it as a meaningful symptom alongside temperature. Intel describes reducing processor clock speed at a thermal threshold, and NVIDIA says a GPU may throttle at its maximum specified temperature (Intel guidance; NVIDIA GPU overheating guidance).
  • High reading without symptoms: do not diagnose a fault from the number alone; verify the sensor, model limit, workload, and system context.

Find the right limit for your exact CPU and GPU

CPU: identify the relevant thermal specification

Find the full CPU model and consult its manufacturer specification. Intel distinguishes Tjunction max—the point before internal thermal controls reduce power to limit temperature—from Tcase, a different measurement intended primarily for system manufacturers. They are not interchangeable. Intel says its processors’ maximum operating temperature is usually within 100°C–110°C, but that is a general description, not a recommended target for every Intel CPU; use the specification for your processor (Intel temperature guidance; Intel processor specifications).

Intel does not publish one typical operating-temperature range for every processor, because system design and workload change the result (Intel temperature guidance). Do not turn an example, a general range, or another CPU’s limit into your own target.

GPU: check the model’s maximum specification

Identify the exact GPU model and check its product specification. NVIDIA does not give one maximum temperature for all GPUs; its support guidance directs readers to the individual GPU specification. For an NVIDIA GPU, its developer guide documents nvidia-smi -q -d TEMPERATURE for temperature readings and related limits (NVIDIA System Management Interface documentation).

How to monitor temperatures and thermal behavior

  1. Identify your hardware. Record the exact CPU and GPU models, and note whether the computer is a laptop or an OEM desktop.
  2. Look up each component’s own limit. Use the CPU and GPU manufacturer’s documentation. Confirm that a monitoring tool’s sensor value corresponds to the specification you are comparing it with.
  3. Watch both during the workload in question. Observe the temperatures while gaming, rendering, or running the task that concerns you, rather than relying only on an idle reading.
  4. Check for throttling and performance changes. Use the monitoring tool’s reported thermal or throttling indicators where available, and note whether performance drops as temperature rises.
  5. Investigate persistent symptoms through the system maker’s guidance. Cooling and airflow can matter; NVIDIA notes that improving system cooling, such as adding a system fan, can help reduce GPU temperature. Intel advises users with overheating issues to contact their system manufacturer.

Intel says third-party utilities can read a processor’s digital thermal sensor. NVIDIA names GPU-Z and EVGA Precision as examples of GPU monitoring utilities (NVIDIA GPU overheating guidance). Verify that any utility you choose supports your current hardware and that you understand which sensor it displays; a tool’s label does not make different manufacturers’ sensor readings directly equivalent.

What protections do throttling and shutdown provide?

Thermal controls can reduce performance to limit heat. Intel also describes automatic shutdown safeguards; NVIDIA says a GPU that continues heating despite performance throttling may shut the system down. These protections can help prevent damage, but they do not explain why a system is running hot or remove the need to investigate persistent throttling, shutdowns, or performance problems (Intel guidance; NVIDIA guidance).

How to interpret common temperature claims

Claim or figure What it actually means
Intel’s 100°C–110°C description Intel’s 2024 general statement that maximum operating temperature for its processors is usually within this range. It is not an individual CPU recommendation or a GPU limit; check the exact processor specification (Intel).
A “typical” temperature for every processor Intel says it does not provide a typical operating-temperature range for each processor because system design and workload affect it (Intel).
One maximum temperature for all GPUs NVIDIA says the maximum specified temperature varies by GPU; consult the individual product specification (NVIDIA).
