Overclocking is aimed at higher clock speeds and potentially more sustained performance; undervolting is aimed at using less voltage for a given point on the processor’s voltage/frequency curve. Either can help, but neither guarantees a faster, cooler, or lower-power computer. The result depends on the CPU, motherboard and firmware, cooling, workload, and whether the processor hits thermal, power, or current limits. Compare a tuned system with its own stock settings under the same workload rather than relying on a universal gain or savings figure.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Overclocking Seeking higher sustained performance where the hardware has headroom Raises operating frequency above default; voltage may also need adjustment. No universal performance gain is established. Supported unlocked Intel desktop CPUs with compatible motherboards; supported AMD Ryzen systems vary by CPU, motherboard, and firmware. Nov 2026
Undervolting Seeking better efficiency, or less heat or power at comparable work Lowers requested voltage or shifts a voltage/frequency curve toward lower voltage; no universal temperature or power reduction is established. Controls depend on CPU, firmware, software, and OEM choices; some Intel systems restrict offsets, while AMD Curve Optimizer is available only on supported systems. Nov 2026

Compare the outcome, not just the setting

What to compare What a useful result looks like Common misread
Sustained performance Repeatable completed work or benchmark score in the workload you care about Assuming a brief peak clock proves a lasting speed increase
Temperature CPU or hottest-core readings during the same workload and comparable ambient conditions Treating a cooler reading as proof of lower energy use
Power CPU-reported package power or separately measured whole-system input, clearly identified Calling a wall-meter reading CPU package power
Stability No errors or crashes across the light and heavy tasks that matter to you Equating a successful boot or one short benchmark with stability
Noise and limits Record fan noise if it matters, and note thermal, power, current, or VRM limiting Assuming a higher requested frequency is useful even when sustained behavior is limited

These comparisons answer different questions. If you want more throughput, prioritize sustained score or completed work. If you want lower heat or electricity use, compare those measures at comparable work. Intel’s baseline checklist includes load voltage, package or hottest-core temperature, system power, and benchmark score; a plug-in meter adds a whole-system wall-input measure rather than isolating the CPU.

What is the difference between overclocking and undervolting?

Overclocking changes the performance target by asking the processor to run at a frequency above its default operating point. Undervolting changes the voltage used at a given operating point—or, on a supported platform, shifts the voltage/frequency curve—rather than directly asking for a higher clock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequency and voltage interact: a higher clock may require more voltage to remain stable, but that is not an automatic requirement to add a fixed amount. Conversely, lowering voltage does not inherently increase clock speed. It may give an automatically boosting processor more thermal or power headroom, but the result depends on the processor’s control behavior and limits.

These are tuning methods, not opposite settings on a single slider. A user can pursue higher frequency, a lower-voltage curve, or—in systems with suitable controls—adjustments to both. Each change needs to be evaluated as a whole-system outcome, not judged by its name or requested setting alone.

Which one is more likely to improve performance?

Overclocking is the direct route when the goal is higher CPU throughput, but only if the processor can sustain the higher operating point without instability or limiting. Undervolting is primarily an efficiency adjustment; it can indirectly help performance if it reduces a constraint that was holding the CPU back, but that is not guaranteed.

Why a higher requested clock may not mean faster work

A processor can briefly reach a high clock and then reduce frequency during a longer workload because it reaches a thermal, package-power, current, or motherboard voltage-regulator limit. Intel’s XTU guidance identifies these constraints as factors that can reduce sustained frequency. A short peak-clock reading therefore does not establish a lasting throughput gain. A fair comparison uses a repeatable workload long enough to show sustained behavior, along with its score and operating conditions. Intel’s overclocking and XTU guide explains the relevant frequency, voltage, and limit considerations.

When undervolting can help—or fail to help—performance

If a processor can perform the same work at a lower voltage and does not encounter a new constraint, the adjustment may improve efficiency. On an automatically boosting CPU, freed headroom may instead be used to boost higher. That may preserve or increase performance, but temperature and total power can then be less predictable. This is an inference from documented curve and boost behavior, not a universal measured result.

An undervolt that is too aggressive can cause instability or errors under particular conditions, including lighter or intermittent workloads that a brief heavy load does not represent. A successful startup or one benchmark run is not enough to establish that the setting works reliably for the tasks that matter to you.

Does overclocking always increase temperatures?

No universal temperature outcome follows from the word “overclock.” Higher voltage raises heat output, and higher sustained work may increase heat and power, but actual temperatures depend on the chosen settings, workload, cooling, ambient conditions, and system limits. A higher requested frequency can also be offset by throttling, leaving little sustained performance benefit.

Likewise, undervolting does not guarantee a lower temperature reading. At a comparable workload, a stable lower-voltage setting may reduce heat or power; an automatic boost controller may use the extra headroom for higher clocks instead. Separate the conditions when comparing results: hold the workload and ambient temperature as consistent as practical, and record the sustained frequency and CPU temperature together.

When cooling is the constraint

If a desktop CPU is already limited by heat, check the cooler’s compatibility and capacity before changing voltage or frequency. Verify the processor socket and power needs, motherboard and case clearance, and the cooler’s supported processor range. Intel advises checking socket and processor power rating; AMD emphasizes sufficient cooling capacity. A suitable cooler may address a thermal bottleneck, but it does not guarantee a particular overclock or eliminate other power and current limits.

If a cooler has been removed or reseated, correct heatsink mounting and thermal-interface material matter to the cooling system. Thermal paste is an installation component, not a tuning control: applying or replacing it does not itself overclock or undervolt a CPU.

Does undervolting lower power use if the CPU boosts higher?

Not necessarily. A stable lower-voltage point can reduce CPU power for comparable work, but an automatically boosting processor may use the available headroom to run faster. That can make the change’s effect on temperature or total consumption less predictable. The outcome must be measured on the particular CPU and workload.

Be precise about what is being measured. CPU-reported package power is not the same as whole-system power measured at the wall, and a temperature reading is not an energy measurement. If electricity use is the goal, a plug-in meter can compare system input under the same conditions; it cannot isolate CPU package power. For a useful comparison, record the metric that matches the question rather than treating “power” as one interchangeable number.

How can I compare stock and tuned settings fairly?

Start with a stock baseline and change one supported setting at a time. Repeat the same workload and record enough information to tell whether a change improved sustained work, efficiency, temperatures, or noise without compromising stability.

  1. Record the system and conditions. Note the CPU model, motherboard and BIOS or firmware, cooling setup, ambient conditions, stock settings, and the workload or benchmark. Keep the workload and other relevant conditions consistent between stock and tuned runs.
  2. Capture a stock baseline. Record the benchmark score or completed work, sustained frequency, load voltage, CPU or hottest-core temperature, and system power. Intel’s baseline checklist includes load voltage, package or hottest-core temperature, system power, and benchmark score; repeat runs when an average will make the comparison more useful.
  3. Choose one objective. Decide whether the priority is throughput, heat and fan noise, or power efficiency. Change one supported setting at a time so that the effect is easier to attribute; do not assume that a higher peak clock or a lower voltage number answers every goal.
  4. Apply the platform’s supported control. Use the appropriate BIOS or vendor software control only if it is available for the specific system. For Intel XTU’s voltage-adjustment workflow, Intel advises changes of no more than 0.05 V per step. This is Intel’s step-size guidance, not a universal safe voltage, a required undervolt increment, or a promise of an effective result.
  5. Repeat the same workload and monitor limits. Compare the score or completed work, sustained—not just peak—frequency, temperatures, load voltage, and the relevant power measure. For overclocking, watch for thermal, package-power, current, or motherboard VRM limiting; for either method, a higher requested clock or lower voltage is not itself proof of improvement.
  6. Check stability beyond a single run. Include the longer and lighter workloads you actually use, and watch for crashes, errors, score regressions, or new limiting behavior. For AMD Curve Optimizer, AMD cautions that automatically derived values depend on the duration of its stress test and may not work in the user’s own workloads; treat them as a starting point and validate them in those workloads.
  7. Keep or revert based on the objective. If the setting crashes, lowers useful performance, or triggers limiting, return to the last stable configuration. Compare repeated results against the stock baseline instead of calling a setting a win based on a successful boot or one peak reading.

For comparisons intended to inform an electricity-use decision, keep the system configuration and workload consistent and note whether you are comparing power during work or energy over a longer period. A wall meter is useful for whole-system input; it does not identify which component accounts for a change. Likewise, a temperature difference without a comparable workload, ambient condition, and sustained-frequency record is difficult to interpret. Do not infer a universal savings percentage or payback period from one machine’s result.

Is overclocking or undervolting available on every CPU?

No. The setting depends on the processor, motherboard, BIOS or firmware, vendor software, and OEM decisions. A control shown in a guide for one platform or CPU generation should not be assumed to exist on every desktop, laptop, or motherboard.

Intel systems

Intel desktop overclocking generally requires a supported unlocked CPU and a compatible motherboard; check the particular processor, chipset, BIOS, and system implementation. Intel says XTU does not provide undervolting controls for locked non-K chips and directs users to their system or motherboard manufacturer for BIOS options. The availability of a menu or software control is not the same as a guarantee that a setting will apply or remain stable.

Intel Undervolt Protection is available on 12th-generation Core and newer systems. When it is active, a negative XTU voltage offset below the boot-time voltage may not apply. Intel warns that disabling this protection exposes security risks and does not recommend doing so as a routine workaround. Check the applicable system documentation rather than disabling a security feature to force an offset.

AMD systems

AMD Ryzen Master exposes Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer settings on supported systems. The Ryzen Master User Guide version 3.1.0, released May 20, 2026, documents negative Curve Optimizer values and all-core or per-core modes. Availability varies; do not assume the same controls exist across Ryzen generations, motherboards, or laptops.

AMD describes Curve Optimizer as shifting the voltage/frequency curve toward lower voltages for negative values. It is not equivalent to applying an identical fixed millivolt offset to every processor. See the AMD Ryzen Master Curve Optimizer documentation for the documented control and its supported modes.

What are the stability, security, and warranty risks?

Changing frequency or voltage can affect stability, security, longevity, and performance, and warranty coverage may be affected. A vendor software option does not remove those risks. The precise impact depends on the product and the warranty terms that apply to it; a general vendor warning is not a determination of an individual warranty claim.

Intel warns that changes to voltage or frequency may affect stability, security, longevity, performance, and warranty coverage. AMD’s Ryzen desktop disclaimer expressly includes undervolting outside AMD’s published specifications in its warranty warning. The Ryzen Master guide says that modifying stock CPU, memory, and voltage settings voids AMD’s product warranty. Consult the terms for the specific product and region before tuning; AMD’s Ryzen Master “Before You Begin” guidance contains its warning.

Which approach should you choose?

Choose according to the result you need, not an assumption that one technique is universally superior. Use overclocking when a supported CPU has room to sustain higher performance in the workload you care about. Consider undervolting when efficiency, heat, or power at comparable work is the goal—or when a supported curve adjustment may help automatic boost behavior. If neither produces a repeatable improvement against stock settings, stock is the better choice.

  • Prioritize throughput: evaluate a supported overclock by sustained workload performance and stability, not by the peak frequency shown briefly.
  • Prioritize efficiency or heat: assess undervolting at comparable work, while accounting for any additional boost the CPU chooses to use.
  • Prioritize electricity use: compare the same workload and system configuration with a wall meter for whole-system input; do not confuse its reading with CPU package power.
  • Have no supported control or enough stability margin? Do not force an unavailable setting or disable a security protection simply to pursue a tune.

There is no established universal percentage gain, temperature drop, wattage saving, or payback period for either method. Results are specific to the processor, firmware, workload, cooling, and measurement method, so a stock-versus-tuned comparison on the same system is the useful basis for a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can undervolting damage a CPU?

An unstable setting can cause crashes, errors, or lost work, so save important data and know how to restore default BIOS settings before changing controls. The vendor warranty warnings also matter: check the terms for your exact CPU and region rather than assuming every undervolt has the same warranty outcome.

Can I undervolt a locked Intel CPU?

Intel says XTU does not offer undervolting controls for locked non-K chips. Some system or motherboard firmware may expose its own options, but availability is model- and OEM-dependent; do not treat another system’s menu as evidence yours supports it.

Is AMD Curve Optimizer the same as an overclock?

No. Negative Curve Optimizer values shift the voltage/frequency curve toward lower voltages, rather than directly specifying a higher clock. On supported systems it may interact with automatic boost behavior, so its practical outcome still needs to be checked against the workload.

Can a laptop be undervolted?

Possibly, but there is no universal laptop rule: OEM firmware, CPU generation, and security settings can hide, restrict, or block voltage controls. Check documentation for the exact laptop and processor, and avoid workarounds that require disabling protections without understanding the security consequences.

Does undervolting improve CPU performance?

Not by itself as a guaranteed result. Undervolting changes voltage or a supported voltage/frequency curve; a stable setting may improve efficiency, and an automatic boost controller may use freed headroom to boost higher. Compare sustained workload results against stock settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does undervolting always lower temperature or electricity use?

No. At comparable work, a stable lower-voltage setting may lower heat or power, but automatic boosting can use the headroom for more performance. Measure temperature and power separately under the same workload, and distinguish CPU package power from whole-system wall input.

Is there a universally safe undervolt or overclock setting?

No universal offset or percentage is established. Stability depends on the CPU, motherboard and firmware, workload, cooling, and system limits. Intel’s 0.05 V step recommendation applies to its XTU voltage-adjustment workflow; it is not a universal safe voltage or a promise of stability.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Overclocking targets higher frequency; undervolting targets lower voltage or a lower-voltage curve. Choose based on your goal, then compare repeatable stock and tuned results under the same workload. Sustained performance, temperature, power, stability, and platform support matter more than a peak clock or a voltage number. Neither method has a universal gain or savings figure, and unavailable controls or security protections should not be forced.
