While Cox advertised latency improvements of up to 32%, that was a company claim, not a result established by independent testing across games and locations.
What Cox Elite Gamer did
Elite Gamer attempted to improve the route PC game traffic took to game servers. Cox said it identified an efficient path and routed game traffic over it after that traffic left Cox’s network. It did not reroute all of a customer’s internet use: web browsing and streaming continued over ordinary routes.
That approach could help if the route beyond Cox’s network was contributing to a game’s latency. It could not guarantee lower ping in every game or location. Wi-Fi interference, modem or line trouble, congestion within Cox’s access network, distance to the game server, and unsupported games could still be the main cause of lag.
What Cox claimed about lag reduction
In its June 25, 2020 launch announcement, Cox said Elite Gamer could reduce lag by up to 32% compared with standard Cox Internet. Engadget reported different figures from Cox promotional material: 34% lower lag, 55% fewer ping spikes, and 45% less jitter. These are attributed marketing claims, not independent benchmark results; the two sets of percentages should not be combined into a single expected improvement.
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.
- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
The available reporting does not establish a controlled independent test across games and locations. Actual results would have depended on the player’s connection, route, game server, and title support.
What Elite Gamer cost
Cox’s 2020 launch pricing depended on the customer’s service and the number of game connections:
Rank #2
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
| At launch in 2020 | Price or inclusion |
|---|---|
| One connection with Panoramic Wifi | Included at no extra charge |
| One connection without Panoramic Wifi | $6.99 per month |
| Each additional connection | $4.99 each, up to three additional connections |
Earlier, during a 2019 test, PC Gamer reported a price of $14.99 per month. That was an earlier test price, not the 2020 launch price.
Was Cox Elite Gamer for consoles?
Elite Gamer was aimed at PC games and supported titles, rather than being a general gaming upgrade for every device or activity. The reported description focused on routing PC game traffic; it does not establish support for Xbox, PlayStation, or mobile gaming. A console player should not treat it as a service designed for their setup.

Is Cox Elite Gamer still available?
No. Light Reading reported that Cox ended the service at the end of 2023 because demand was lower than expected. It is a discontinued product, not a current Cox add-on to sign up for.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Cox’s faster internet plans lower gaming ping?
Not necessarily. Cox’s current plans page promotes 1 Gig and 2 Gig service with Panoramic Wifi equipment on listed offers and describes 1 Gig as suitable for multiplayer gaming. Those download-speed tiers are not evidence that latency will fall, and Cox’s current page does not establish that either plan replaces Elite Gamer’s routing function.

- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
Bandwidth and latency describe different things. A higher download tier can help when a household is running out of capacity, but it does not by itself shorten the route to a game server or remove a bottleneck elsewhere. Before changing plans to address high ping, identify whether the issue is Wi-Fi, the local connection, the game server, or the route between networks.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What to check if you still have high ping
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi play: If Ethernet improves the connection, wireless interference or signal quality may be involved.
- Check whether the problem is game-specific: Issues limited to one title or server can point away from a general speed-plan problem.
- Look for local connection trouble: Modem, line, or in-home network issues are not corrected by buying more download bandwidth.
- Check current service details at your address: Cox plan availability and offer terms can vary, and a speed tier should not be assumed to provide gaming-route optimization.
