But a counter-depth label does not mean the doors and handles will be flush with the counters, nor does it ensure the doors can open fully in a tight location. Measure the actual projection and door swing.

Standard-depth refrigerators often provide more interior storage, which may suit a household that needs more room for groceries. The tradeoff is that the appliance usually projects farther into the room. Check whether that projection affects a walkway, island, or nearby cabinet before deciding that added capacity is worth it.

Compare capacity model by model
Category labels cannot tell you how much usable room a particular refrigerator has. Compare the published cubic-foot capacity, shelf and bin arrangement, freezer configuration, and the way your household shops. LG advertises its Counter-Depth MAX line at up to 27 cubic feet; that is a product-line claim, not a typical capacity for all counter-depth refrigerators.
How to measure for a refrigerator
Take measurements before choosing a model, then confirm them against that model’s dimensional drawing and installation guide. Manufacturer instructions vary, so do not assume a clearance recommended for one refrigerator applies to another. Bosch’s refrigerator installation guidance also emphasizes measuring the opening and following the selected model’s clearance requirements.

- Measure the opening. Record width, height, and depth. If walls or cabinets are uneven, measure at multiple points and use the tightest width and height.
- Measure depth to the counter edge. Start at the back wall, and account for the plug, water line, rear clearance, and the installation depth specified for the model.
- Compare every listed depth. Check the dimensional drawing for case depth, depth with doors, handle depth, and depth with doors open. Do not treat one depth figure as the installed projection.
- Check doors and drawers in use. Measure the swing against nearby walls, cabinets, and islands. Confirm that doors open far enough to remove bins and drawers. Consider a model-specific hinge or zero-clearance design only if it addresses a measured obstruction.
- Check width, height, and delivery access. Confirm the refrigerator fits the opening and can pass through exterior doors, hallways, and turns on its way into the kitchen.
- Follow the installation guide. Verify the selected model’s ventilation and side, top, and rear clearances, along with any other installation requirements.
What about price?
The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal price premium for counter-depth refrigerators. Price depends on the brand, configuration, finish, features, retailer, and current offers. Compare current prices for models with similar features rather than assuming the depth category determines which one costs more.
