Researchers have demonstrated a tiny terahertz imager that can detect an object through cardboard at close range. It is not an X-ray camera, cannot see through walls in the everyday sense, and is not a feature in phones currently on sale. The work points toward possible phone-sized sensors for inspecting nearby objects, but the reported prototype is still a research demonstration.
What the chip actually does
The device developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas and Seoul National University is a reflection imager. It sends out terahertz or millimeter-wave signals and detects what bounces back. By processing the reflected signal’s phase and amplitude, the system can form an outline or image of an object.
The 2024 IEEE paper describes an array operating at 296 GHz, with concurrent transceiver pixels. The university describes the broader signal range as 200–400 GHz. That is very different from medical or industrial X-rays: the device does not generate conventional X-ray images.
The demonstrated prototype used three pixels, each about 0.5 mm square—roughly grain-of-sand scale. Its small size makes handheld-device research plausible, but does not mean a complete phone-ready camera has been built.

How far can it see through materials?
In a reported demonstration, the imager detected an object behind cardboard at about 1 cm (0.39 inch). That is a close-range result, not evidence that the chip can image through building walls or work at room-scale distances.
The university release discusses roughly 5 inches as a target for a future iteration. That is a development goal, not the demonstrated range. Performance also depends on the material and the imaging setup; the available result does not establish equivalent penetration through wood, drywall, concrete, or other materials.

Is it safe, and is it really X-ray vision?
No: “X-ray vision” is a comparison, not a description of the radiation. Terahertz signals are lower-energy and generally non-ionizing, unlike X-rays. Kenneth K. O, director of the Texas Analog Center of Excellence, described the concept as “like Superman’s X-ray vision,” while qualifying that it uses “signals at 200 gigahertz to 400 gigahertz instead of X-rays, which can be harmful.” (University of Texas at Dallas)
That distinction does not amount to a complete safety assessment for a future consumer phone. The cited sources do not establish exposure limits, regulatory approval, or the safety evaluation of a finished smartphone implementation.

Could it find studs, wires, pipes, or hidden package contents?
Those are proposed directions for terahertz imaging, not verified features of a consumer product. The university describes possible uses including package inspection, locating studs and wiring, detecting pipe cracks, and medical applications. Each would require appropriate range, resolution, scanning speed, and validation for its intended task. A close-range cardboard demonstration alone does not establish dependable detection of hidden wiring, plumbing, or medical conditions.

No cited source reports a smartphone with this imager on sale, or provides a consumer price or retail module. The work concerns a research prototype and the possibility of handheld use. The University of Texas at Dallas attributes the miniaturization effort to nearly two decades of work through its Texas Analog Center of Excellence (TxACE research history); that long development history is not evidence that a commercial phone is imminent.
If consumer or industrial products emerge, useful specifications to compare would include working distance, which materials can be imaged, spatial resolution, scan time, field of view, power and heat, calibration needs, privacy safeguards, and whether the system is built into a phone or sold as a separate instrument. Those are product evaluation criteria, not specifications established by this prototype.
