A Sept. 30 camp report said Lillard understood that he, Ja Morant and Deni Avdija would start, while noting he had not discussed the lineup in depth with coach Micah Nori.
What has been reported about Lillard’s role?
On Oct. 2, CBS Sports reported that Lillard may open camp with Portland’s starting group, citing Sam Amico of Hoops Wire. The wording matters: it describes a possibility, not an official decision by Nori or the Trail Blazers.
A Sept. 30 account from Blazer’s Edge offered more detail. Lillard reportedly said that, as far as he knew, he, Morant and Avdija would start. He also said he had not had an in-depth conversation with Nori about the lineup, so his understanding should not be mistaken for confirmation from the coach.
Will Damian Lillard start for the Trail Blazers?
As of Oct. 3, 2026, the available reporting does not establish Portland’s final opening-night lineup or confirm that Lillard will start every regular-season game. The reports support the possibility that he will be among the starters, but the decision remains open.

Lillard is returning after a torn Achilles tendon sidelined him for the entire previous season. NBC Sports reported that he entered camp without restrictions and quoted him as saying he was “operating like I wasn’t hurt.” That is a reported camp status and reflects Lillard’s approach; it is not an independent medical assessment or proof of what role the team will give him.
Why does Portland’s lineup fit matter?
Portland has several players who are most comfortable handling the ball. Associated Press training-camp coverage, republished by The Washington Post, identified Lillard, Morant, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson as part of a point-guard-heavy group. General manager Joe Cronin said the team still had to sort out roles, touches and team dynamics.
Avdija adds another creator to the equation. Oregon Public Broadcasting described the returning All-Star as ball-dominant alongside Lillard and Morant. Lillard said he believed the balance would work based on what the players could do, but optimism is not evidence that a particular combination has already proved effective in games.
Spacing is part of the question, too. OPB reported that Portland ranked 28th in the NBA in three-point makes the previous season. That offers context for the team’s shooting situation, but does not by itself show which players should start or how a new lineup will perform.

What to watch for as camp continues
- A direct lineup decision: Nori’s announcement would settle whether Lillard is in the starting group; a player’s expectation does not.
- How the guards share creation: The team must determine who initiates offense and how touches are divided among its ball-handlers.
- Whether the combinations fit: The available camp reports identify the roster’s talent and spacing questions, but do not establish a proven lineup through game evidence.
