The headline “This bra could save lives” refers to Bloomer Tech’s proposed smart bra for cardiac monitoring—not a bra proven to prevent deaths or diagnose heart disease. The concept uses textile-integrated sensors to collect ECG and other physiological data, with the aim of supporting remote care. The company’s platform has been described in development and feasibility studies; a later MIT Solve profile said its latest bra design and app had not yet launched publicly.
What is Bloomer Tech’s smart bra?
Bloomer Tech, founded by Alicia Chong Rodriguez and Monica Abarca, developed a concept for embedding soft, medical-grade electronics into an everyday bra. The garment is intended to collect heart signals and other data continuously, with a mobile app providing insights and reports for clinicians. MIT Solve describes the platform as an AI-based ECG bra.

The proposed sensors measure a full multi-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), temperature, activity and body position. An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity; it is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis. The envisioned role is to give a care team more information over time and help coordinate patient-specific monitoring.
Why monitor heart health this way?
The idea responds to gaps in cardiovascular research and care. MIT Technology Review reported in 2018 that women made up about one-third of participants in heart-drug research trials. Its account also noted that women may experience heart-attack symptoms differently from the familiar pattern of chest pain, or may have no classic chest-pain symptoms. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women worldwide, according to that account.
#1 Best Overall
A wearable that is less disruptive than repeated clinic visits could, in principle, help clinicians follow changes and identify deterioration sooner. That is the intended benefit, not a demonstrated outcome: the available accounts describe a developing technology and do not establish that wearing the bra has saved lives.
What stage is the technology at?
MIT Technology Review described Bloomer Tech as moving into clinical testing in its 2018 coverage. A later MIT Solve profile says the technology had undergone early feasibility studies approved by an institutional review board, involving patients with different bra sizes. It also says the latest app version and bra design prepared for regulatory approval had “yet to be launched publicly.”
Those descriptions indicate development and feasibility work, not an established consumer diagnostic product. The cited accounts do not establish current regulatory clearance, peer-reviewed clinical accuracy, or a confirmed mortality benefit. They also do not establish that a retail version is currently available.
How does it differ from a breast self-check reminder bra?
The Stay In Touch Bra is a separate product with a different purpose. Its official site describes diagrams inside both cups that instruct and remind wearers how to perform breast self-checks. It is presented as an awareness and education tool, not as a garment that senses tumors or diagnoses cancer.

Can wearing a bra detect breast cancer?
These sources do not support that claim. Bloomer Tech’s concept is for cardiac signals, while the Stay In Touch Bra is described as a self-check reminder. Neither is documented here as detecting breast cancer or providing a cancer diagnosis. A reminder to perform a self-check should not be confused with a diagnostic test.
