Is cotton or polyester better for kids’ T-shirts?
Choose based on when your child will wear the shirt. Cotton absorbs sweat, which can be comfortable during low-sweat everyday use, but a saturated cotton shirt can feel heavy. Polyester made to wick moisture can move sweat across the fabric and dry quickly during activity. A polyester label alone does not guarantee that performance.

Which T-shirt fabric is cooler for kids?
There is no universal answer. A lightweight, breathable shirt that fits comfortably can feel cooler than a dense or tight one, regardless of its fiber label. Cotton absorbs moisture; once saturated, it can feel heavy and less comfortable. Engineered polyester can move sweat across the fabric and dry faster, but untreated polyester may feel uncomfortable in heat if sweat accumulates against the skin.
As textile expert Po-Chun Hsu told the Associated Press, a wet T-shirt can both promote evaporation and block breathability, making it uncomfortable when completely wet. The useful distinction is not simply cotton versus polyester: it is how the specific garment handles moisture and airflow.

What fabric is best for a child with eczema?
For children with eczema, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends loose-fitting 100% cotton and advises avoiding synthetic fibers such as polyester because they can trigger eczema. This is eczema-specific guidance, not evidence that every child finds cotton more comfortable.
- Remove tags that rub against the skin.
- Wash new clothes before wearing them, using fragrance-free and dye-free detergent.
- If a uniform made from irritating polyester is required, the AAD suggests practical adjustments such as making it looser and removing tags.
- If symptoms persist or clothing seems to trigger flares, consult the child’s dermatologist.
How to choose a shirt for sports or sweaty play

Children can respond differently to fabrics, and the best choice may depend on the sport, so judge the shirt during the activity rather than relying on the word “polyester.”

What to check beyond the fiber label
A child may find one shirt comfortable and another irritating even when both are made from the same fiber. Check the garment itself and let the child’s response guide the choice.
