A used Lenovo Tiny PC’s 24/7 electricity cost depends on its average power draw at the wall and your electricity rate. As an illustration, a continuous 15-watt load uses 10.8 kWh in a 30-day month. At the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program’s illustrative rate of $0.11/kWh, that is about $1.19 for the month—but the rate is a federal-facility average from July 2024, not a typical household tariff. Your PC’s actual streaming draw and local rate may differ.
Estimate the electricity cost for your own PC
Use the average power draw of the whole PC at the wall, rather than the power adapter’s rated capacity or a brief peak reading. Multiply the resulting energy use by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh):
- Energy (kWh) = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours
- Electricity cost = energy (kWh) × your price per kWh
For a more representative number, measure the PC during the stream workload you plan to run and average its consumption across typical operation. If a display or other equipment will also remain on, measure or estimate those loads separately and add them. This estimates electricity use; it does not include the cost of buying the PC, internet service, or other expenses.
Illustrative 15-watt scenario
A continuous 15 W load uses 0.015 kW. Over a 30-day month, that is 0.015 × 720 = 10.8 kWh; over a 365-day year, it is 0.015 × 8,760 = 131.4 kWh. Using FEMP’s illustrative $0.11/kWh rate, the arithmetic is 10.8 × $0.11 = $1.19 per 30-day month and 131.4 × $0.11 = $14.45 per year. Replace $0.11 with your own tariff to estimate your bill.

The 15 W scenario is an example, not a measurement of every Lenovo Tiny while streaming. ServeTheHome’s 2020 review measured 12–15 W idle at 120 V for its tested quad-core ThinkCentre M920 Tiny. That result gives an order of magnitude for one tested model at idle; it does not establish the draw of your configuration while encoding, with a display attached, or with other devices connected. FEMP identified $0.11/kWh as an average price at federal facilities as of July 2024, not a residential electricity rate. Check that the Tiny PC can sustain the stream
A low electricity estimate does not prove that a particular used PC can encode a live stream continuously. The exact Tiny model, processor, configuration, and encoding workload matter. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported options, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that your PC can encode those settings reliably. YouTube transcodes live streams for different output formats and recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Start with a test stream and verify that the PC sustains the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate without dropped frames or encoder overload. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Allow enough upload capacity and test the connection
Upload bandwidth is separate from the PC’s electricity use, but it affects whether the stream stays online. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a single 5 Mbps stream calls for at least 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that guideline; a 8 Mbps stream calls for 9.6 Mbps. Leave room for other traffic on the connection as well.

Run a speed test under conditions similar to the planned stream and check the live stream’s health. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” It also cautions: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A connection that briefly reaches the target speed may still be unreliable over a continuous run. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
Common cost and streaming problems
- Your bill is higher than the estimate: the PC may draw more than the illustrative 15 W during encoding, or the estimate may omit a display or other equipment. Measure each always-on device at the wall and include its operating hours.
- The electricity estimate uses the wrong rate: substitute the per-kWh price from your bill or utility tariff. FEMP’s $0.11 figure is a federal-facility illustration from July 2024, not a household rate.
- The stream drops or buffers: check sustained upload speed, allow YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and review stream health. Network disruption can break a live stream.
- The PC struggles to encode: test the exact resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use. YouTube’s ingest recommendations do not certify the capability of a specific used PC.
