There is no universal cost winner between fiber and mobile broadband for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The stream’s bitrate determines how much data it sends; the better-value connection is the one that can sustain the required upload speed and handle that data within its full monthly cost, allowance, and service terms. Compare actual plans at the streaming location—not just advertised prices.
Start with the stream’s bitrate and monthly data
A continuous stream uses data around the clock. Estimate its baseline transfer from the encoder bitrate:
Monthly data in bytes = bitrate in bits per second ÷ 8 × seconds streamed
For 30 days of uninterrupted streaming, the period is 2,592,000 seconds. At 4.5 Mbps, that works out to about 1.46 TB in a vendor-published 2026 example; it is an arithmetic estimate, not a measurement of every stream. Actual transfer varies with bitrate, protocol overhead, and uptime. Add some margin rather than treating the calculation as an exact bill forecast. Stream settings can also change the baseline: YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 12 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. Compare the costs and limits that affect each connection
Fiber and mobile broadband have different plan structures, and both vary by location and provider. Use the same stream settings and billing period for each candidate. There is not enough information to name a cheaper option without the actual local plans.

In the United States, broadband labels can help compare base and introductory prices, data, typical speeds, and other relevant terms. Include equipment rental, installation, applicable taxes or fees, and what happens when an allowance is exceeded. FCC broadband labels.

Why mobile’s advertised price may not tell the whole story
A phone plan is not automatically a suitable replacement for home broadband. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s 2024 report says smartphone hotspot use may require a more expensive plan or may be limited in speed or data allowance. Check the specific mobile broadband label and service terms. In the same report-era U.S. context, typical nationwide post-paid unlimited mobile plans were described as costing $50 or more for the first line, and prepaid plans as $30 or more; those figures do not establish that hotspot data is unlimited. The report also summarized additional charges of $10 per 50 GB as common where major fixed providers cap access near 1 TB. These are 2024 market summaries, not current quotes. FCC 24-136.
That report recorded median mobile upload speed of 9.80 Mbps measured in April 2024 and median fixed upload speed of 19.45 Mbps measured in November 2021. Because the measurements are from different dates, they are not a same-period head-to-head comparison and do not predict performance at your address. A median also cannot tell you whether a particular connection will sustain your chosen bitrate.

Use this checklist to calculate your own comparison
- Choose the actual stream setting. Record the resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder bitrate. Use YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point, not a substitute for testing your stream. Review YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Estimate data for your billing period. Multiply bitrate in bits per second divided by eight by the seconds you expect to stream. Convert the result to decimal GB or TB, then add a reasonable allowance for overhead and any extra uptime.
- Collect the full terms for local plans. Record recurring price after promotions, applicable fees, required equipment, installation costs, contract terms, data allowance, upload speed, and restrictions after any limit.
- Check hotspot rules separately. For mobile service, find out whether hotspot data comes from a separate allowance, when speeds may be reduced, and whether the plan permits continuous use for this purpose.
- Test at the encoder’s location. Check sustained upload performance under representative conditions. A brief speed test is useful but does not by itself establish that an upload will remain stable all day.
- Compare like with like. Put each plan’s full recurring cost and any one-time charges beside the same stream setting, expected data use, and billing period. Include what happens if the service is congested, capped, or interrupted.
Choose based on total cost and whether the stream can stay up
Mobile broadband can look inexpensive, but a limited hotspot allowance, speed reduction, or unstable upload can make it unsuitable for an always-on stream. Fiber should not automatically be assumed cheaper or more reliable: compare the actual available plans, their upload terms, and performance at the installation address. For a mission-critical broadcast, Livestream recommends dedicated internet connected by Ethernet.
